Proposal +5- bigcounrty609

I am going to do my research on whether multivitamins really work. It’s something that one third of americans take daily, but is there really a true nutritional value? Recent study’s have shown that they may not make healthy people healthier. It seems like a topic I can find some good information on and be interested in.

Do Multivitamins Really Work?

This link is a good site that explains the topic in general and has some good information in it. It has a chart of who needs want vitamins in particular. I will be able to use this cite for my research very easily.

Don’t Waste Your Money on Multivitamins

This link is useful because it goes into detail on how pointless multivitamins are. It doesn’t go into detail about the negatives rather how the positives of a multivitamin are regularly absent.

National Institute of Health

This link will be very helpful by introducing many interesting facts about multivitamins. It doesn’t talk about negatives or positives rather an over-arching generalization about multivitamins that gives me information I will definitely use for my research.

Should You Take a Multivitamin?

This is a short but very helpful article. It’s main purpose is to allow people to know if they should take a multivitamin or not. This will help me understand the topic furthermore. It also talks about side effects which is an interesting twist on multivitamins.

Health Consequences

I will utilize this article by using the negatives of multivitamins that it gives me. For some cases multivitamins might not benefit you, but some may even harm you with negative side effects.

White Papers

You guys (many of you) rock! I’m very happy with the quality of the White Papers I’m seeing this afternoon. Many of you are demonstrating significant engagement with your topics and theses. The work you’ve done so far, of course, is shreddable, but I’m heartened by the quality and thoroughness of many of these admirable but entirely improvable drafts.

touchdown

Blank Papers

That good news is diluted by the woeful compliance of the group as a whole. Fewer than half of my now 43 students have published a White Paper as of 4pm today, TUE OCT 13, four hours past the deadline. That means half of you are in default.

  • Some of the missing White Papers are from students whose Proposals+5 I have seen, so I have some idea what you’re working on.
  • For those of you who have submitted neither Proposals nor White Papers, I am completely in the dark about your plans and am forced to conclude that you don’t have any idea what to research.
    • As deep as we are into this semester, and with so little time remaining, I am very worried about students who do not have a plan.
    • You should be, too.

Starfish Reporting System

The college requires faculty to complete surveys in advance of the Midterm Grades to indicate how students are progressing. I’ve received notice that those surveys are now due. I’ll complete them Friday.

  • GREAT JOB. If you’ve attended all but a couple of our classes and turned in almost all of your assignments, I’ll report that you’re doing a “Great Job!” It doesn’t mean you’re tracking for an A+; it means you’re making reasonable progress and that I endorse your performance.
  • POOR ATTENDANCE. If you’ve missed more than 3 of our first 10 classes, I’ll report “Poor Attendance.”
    • (That would amortize as 9 out of 30, which grades as failure.)
  • POOR PERFORMANCE. If you’ve posted only a few of our 9 postable assignments, I’ll report “Poor Performance.”
  • NO PROPOSAL, NO WHITE PAPER. If you’ve posted neither a Proposal+5 nor a White Paper, even if you are fairly current on other assignments, I’ll report “Poor Performance” because of my reasonable worry that you’re not ready to engage with semester’s primary assignment.
  • GRADE BELOW C. If your assignments are current but your work is sloppy, incomplete, rich with errors, or of very low quality, I will report “Overall Grade Below C.”

Can You Hear Me?

The college, like me, wants an “early warning” system to send a notice to students who think they have all the time in the world to complete their semester projects. I embrace this program as an excuse to poke those of you who need to sit up straight and aim your minds directly at your research at least long enough to convince your professor that you’re at work. Do I have your attention?

IFWT-Review

Good Time to Reach Out

You know how to reach me. If you’re afraid you’ll receive a negative report and want to convince me you don’t deserve one, by all means let me know immediately. I respond very generously to all student contact. (It’s those who don’t tell me what’s going on that I can’t support.)

White Paper—ohearnj8

Practice Opening:

Capital punishment has been one of many shadows that covers our nations history. The costs alone are radical in comparison to other forms of punishment such as life in prison. Many believe that the death penalty is a very good deterrent for index crimes but research has shown that there is no evidence supporting this. There are very few states that still practice capital punishment, but it needs to be done away with completely. Our nation has evolved since the 18th century and so should our practices.

Practice Opening:

The death penalty is still alive and well in many states across our nation. Many of the cases where the end result is death are black males, over 70% of all cases. This shows the racial bias that capital punishment has on black males. Whom many could not afford their own council to defend themselves in court. Some of those who could not afford council were perhaps innocent men that given the chance, a good defense team would have proven in the court of law.

Content Description:

  • Racially biased in Capital Punishment.
  • Costs of performing the death penalty.
  • The innocent killed by death penalty.

Racially Biased toward black males in capital punishment.

Since 1977 over 77% of all death penalties that occur are done to black males. Many of the states that still perform the death penalty are from the south who are known for their racist feelings toward minorities, primarily blacks. A large amount of jurors in the south are white therefore leading to many guilty verdicts.

Costs of Death Penalty.

The death penalty is substantially more expensive then giving someone life in jail without parole. There have been reports in which its stated that by abolishing the death penalty in a state will save them 90 million dollars annually. In Florida it was learned that each death penalty costs the state 3 million dollars.

The innocent killed by capital punishment.

Many innocent people are killed each year from capital punishment. A majority of them could not afford their own council. New technology is finding each time a person was wrongfully executed and what can we even do if we have killed them before we find out. Death is a final solution and there are no redos, so why not give them life in prison and be able to set them free if found not guilty one day.

Working hypothesis.

  1. The death penalty is near the end in its life in our country. This will lead states to focus tax payers money in more needed areas.
  2. Capital punishment will be abolished in the United States and less will wrongfully die each year due to this barbaric penalty.

Topics for Smaller papers.

  • Racism in Our legal systems.
  • The results of abolishing the death penalty.
  • Innocent people put to death.

Current state:

I feel that this topic is full of information and Gives me room to show my stance along with the facts and statistics. Though I need to find more info that I can use in my paper. This needs to be known by many so that there can be changes made to our current system for dealing with this.

White Paper—cswilliams

A practice opening:

Mass shootings have been a big problem in the United States for over a decade now. A mass shooting is when a single individual unleashes deadly force by firearms into a crowd of defensively people. Ever since the Columbine shooting in Colorado in 1999, there have been more and more mass shootings in places especially at educational institutes. More and more communities are being traumatized because of mass shootings. There are two main reasons as to why these mass shootings occur. First is the fact that automatic firearms such as assault rifles are too easy to obtain within the country. The second reason is that the fact that individuals feel lonely in society and feel the need to unleash terror among other individuals in society. Something needs to be done about this occurring problem.

A practice opening:

It’s a weekly occurrence now. People here it on the news all the time. The same questions always pop up such as “Where was it this time”, “How many died” and “Is the killer in custody?” The sad thing is that it is not even tragic anymore because it happens so much nowadays and nothing is being done to fix the problem. Innocent lives are lost everyday because of these common killers that are called mass shootings. A mass shooting is when a single individual unleashes a deadly force by firearms into a crowd of defenseless people. This occurs in places such as schools, movie theaters and even churches. So the question is anything being done to prevent this? The answer is no. The United States’ is the only 1st world country that has this problem. Countries like Australia and Great Britain don’t suffer from these problems. It is probably because that these countries have way more stricter gun laws than United States’ gun laws. To add to this, our leaders of this country don’t seem to care that is an occurring problem in our country nor are they making any process to fix this gun violence.

2015 Oregon Community College shooting:

Just recently there has been another mass murder that occurred Umpqua Community College in Western Oregon. This was yet another community that has been traumatized by gun violence. Many questions unfolded with this story such as how and why did he commit such a heinous crime. The answers were obvious because as a country we have become accustomed to such gun violence before. Due to respect of the victims, the Oregon killer’s name will not be mentioned. The Oregon killer suffered from being lonely as a young adult and as a result he developed mental health issues and was angry toward other people that felt that did him wrong in society. He was a part of a notorious and now considered a terrorist organization by some people, Beta Uprising. This organization is mainly composed of young males, mostly in their early 20’s that feel inferior to society and what to take out their angry by unleashing a mass killing. This isn’t the first time something like this as occurred. Another mass murder, who’s name will also not be mentioned, also committed a mass shooting at Santa Barbara University in California. He was also apart of the same organization as the Oregon killer’s. Both of these people show signs of mental health issues and were not treated properly. This made them go out of their way to buy many firearms so they could go out and commit this crime. They also were able to by the guns legally which they shouldn’t have allowed to. The FBI confirms that the background check failed on both of these guys. Another problem would be that on how they were able to buy these dangerous weapons so easily. This is because the United States also isn’t strict enough with gun control. I do believe people have the right to defend themselves with guns but the National Rifle Association(NRA) shouldn’t be selling assault rifles to the public people. Only the military and other law enforcement agencies should have the right to use these weapons. This has shown to cause multiple problems within this country. The problem with taking away assault rifles is that it would go against the second amendment of the constitution which will also cause problems to people. This is a difficult process to fix but our leaders of this country should be motivated than they are currently.

Current State of Paper:
I think I have a lot of ideas that I want to talk about, I just have to form them into a complete research to ensure that it makes sense to all of the readers.

Video Games Are a Therapy for Autistic Sufferers

Content Descriptions

  • What is Autism/ASD?
  • Story Telling is Good for Autism
  • The Center for Brain Health’s Video Game
  • Benefits of Video Games for Autisim

Practice Opening (for)

Video games, although generally played alone, are not an antisocial endeavor. Neuroscientists at The Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas have collaborated with video game developers on a counterintuitive innovation: a game for those suffering from any form of Autism to utilize as therapy. Creators, psychologists, and patients alike have attributed increased social and empathy skills within the players to their playing the game. Scores on psychologically based social tests improved, as well as displays of enhanced social interactions. In the game, players create an avatar and practice interacting in virtual simulations of real world experiences that they may have trouble navigating, like jobs interviews and behaviors in class. It sounds counterintuitive to prescribe autistic patients an electronic, fictional game to improve their social performance in the real world, but psychology, neuroscience, and the autistic players alike are all witnessing the positive benefits being exhibited.

Practice Opening (against)

Medical professionals may start prescribing video games to those afflicted with autism. Researchers and video game developers collaborated at The Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas and created a game designed as therapy for those on the autism spectrum to utilize. They purport that this creation provides the patients with a safe environment to develop their social skills. However, indulging in video games as therapy for autism is not a viable solution. Real world experience is crucial in overcoming social ineptness. Assuring those with autism that they can improve by sitting alone and controlling an avatar on a screen makes little sense.  Going out, meeting people, and becoming better at socializing in actual environments is authentic and will prevent a video game from becoming a crutch. A Pediatrics Magazine study found that autistic individuals are more likely to become addicted to video games than those without the disorder. Prescribing an abstract, unreal and addictive treatment method for autism is a very frightening idea.

Practice Opening (for)

An ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) is a brain based disorder that greatly inhibits social skills and causes displays of unnatural behavior, such as resistance to change and repeated movements. Surprisingly, this life-altering disease can be alleviated by a video game. The Center for Brain Health at the University of Texas, teamed with neuroscientists, unveiled a game created to help those who are on the autism spectrum. Along with this specific game, storytelling video games in general have been found to improve social functioning in these individuals. Video games have become a feasible new therapy for an ASD, allowing sufferers to control characters in real world simulations that train their sympathy, empathy, and social skills without the intense pressure and societal backlash often faced by this group.

What is Autism/ASD?

Autism is a brain based disorder that impairs social functioning and communication skills. ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism is four times more likely to affect boys than girls, and boys are typically drawn to video games.

Web MD reports common symptoms of autism: significant problems developing nonverbal communication skills, such as eye-to-eye gazing, facial expressions, and body posture. People with autism may have difficulty understanding another person’s feelings, such as pain or sorrow. Video games are a great place to practice these skills using virtual characters.

Story-Telling is Good for Autism

A German and Austrian study found the underlying motivations behind playing video games, and the benefits games can provide for those with autism. The psychological theory of mind is behind the positive aspects of video gaming. Theory of mind allows us to put ourselves in the minds of others, and storytelling in video games is very effective at immersing players in various points of views. Autistic players, who generally lack at figuring out the thoughts of others, are given a character to play as. They can learn to empathize with the person they are playing as, and begin to care about the fate of this virtual character.

Researchers tested two different video games on randomly assigned participants. One group played Gone Home, which involved players returning home from college to find an empty house; their goal was to figure out what happened to their family members using clues. The second game was Against the Wall, in which players scaled a wall with interactive bricks. This game, however, provided no story line or character development.” The storytelling games triumph over the nonlinear, arcade style games.

The Center for Brain Health’s Video Game

Traditional psychology often employs role playing between the client and the psychologist, who act out different social scenarios together. The Center for Brain Health’s new creation, backed by neuroscience findings, takes this role playing to a more realistic level. They’ve created a video game specifically designed to aid those with autism. Whereas some games, such as Gone Home, have been employed for this purpose before, this is the first actual game created solely for this purpose. This game provides players with a helpful experience: “using high-tech graphics, customized avatars, and real-time face tracking…to practice engaging in realistic social situations like job interviews, confrontations with neighbors or even dates — scenarios that are often vexing for individuals with an autism spectrum or anxiety disorder.”

Video games are fun, hold a player’s focus, and provide them a safe place to fail. Normal conversations can be outside an autistic person’s comfort zone, and this game gives them a relaxed and pressure-free environment to have authentic conversations through avatars.

Benefits of Video Games for Autism

Leading clinicians for the Center for Brain Health’s gaming project found progress in users within five weeks time. Scores on tests for emotional recognition rose, as did the ability to understand what others were thinking. (add benefits as found)

Working Hypothesis 1

Video games are a viable form of therapy for autism, giving sufferers a safe environment to hone their social and empathetic skills through realistic simulations.

Working Hypothesis 2

Prescribing video games for those with autism is not a productive treatment, for playing a fictional simulation is far inferior to gaining real world experience and social practice.

Topics for Smaller Papers

  • The effects of other specific games, such as Gone Home and Evo, on autism.
  • Video games are often said to be addictive for those with autism. I could devote a paper to weighing the benefits of playing the game against the negatives, namely the possible addiction that could develop.

Current State of the Research Paper
There does not seem to be a lot of information published about the effect of video games on autism. There have been several studies done on how storytelling games can aid the social skills of those with the disorder, and an entire game has been designed to do so. I will have to draw many of my own conclusions and find connections between the material that currently exists on the topic. This specific argument is challenging due to the little information, but the content that exists does strongly help the case for prescribing video games to those on the autism spectrum. I will try to focus largely on the Center for Brain Health’s game and the findings/research around it, and I will incorporate the findings of the effects of storytelling in games on autism.

White Paper – tpaz1

Practice Opening 1:

The death penalty is practiced and performed in many states today, in 2015. States such as, Georgia, Texas, Utah and 28 other states allow legal executions. A good percentage of criminals, who are sentenced result into being executed, but States that allow the death penalty should realize other alternatives, leading it to be fully abolished. The death penalty deserves to be abolished because it takes away human rights, too expensive to tax payers, and time consuming to prevent people from committing murder or other related crimes.

Practice Opening 2:

Many states today believe and perform legal executions to dangerous criminals. People today, don’t realize the cost and effect of the death penalty being performed. There are currently 31 states that allow the death penalty to be legal, leaving only 19 other states to be illegal. States that perform legal executions are to supposedly “prevent” less violent crimes, but no studies today, have proven that claim. There are many flaws in reasoning with legal executions, it goes against human rights, religions, tax payers, and court’s jurisdiction. The death penalty goes against many negative factors, leaving it to not be possibly administered fairly and must be abolished.

Content Descriptions:

  • The Innocent executions
  • Cost to tax-payers
  • Pope Francis’s Stand

The Innocent:

There are many cases were innocent people are convicted of crimes they didn’t commit, when a case is brought to a re-trial of people who were later found to be innocent have actually been put to death. 4.1 percent or one in 25 has became the error rate of wrongful executions. For an example, Cameron Willingham was convicted of murder in 1992. In 2001, he was put to death, months later Forensic Science Commission later found evidence was misinterpret and evidence used against him was invalid.

Execution’s Cost:

Court cases that don’t result into cost roughly around $740,000, while cases that do result into the use of the death penalty cost around $1.26 million. It costs more to execute a person rather than keeping him or her in prison for life. The maintaining of a death row prisoner would cost tax payers $90,000 or more per year than a prisoner in general population. The highest cost of the death penalty was in the state of California. California has totaled over $4 billion since 1978.

Pope Francis’s Stand:

As Pope Francis took his visit to the U.S, he strongly stated to the congress that the death penalty should be abolished. “I Am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human and person is endowed with an inalenable dignity, and society can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convicted of crimes.” The Pope expresses the responsibility to protect and defend human life. Many hope Pope Francis’s words influenced officials and people of the country to recognize the wrongs of legal executions.

Working Hypothesis:

1: The death penalty deserves to be abolished because it takes away human rights, too expensive to tax payers, and time consuming to prevent people from committing murder or other related crimes.

2: The death penalty goes against many negative factors, leaving it to not be possibly administered fairly and must be abolished.

Topics For Smaller Papers:

  • Why the Death Penalty became illegal in other states
  • Other Countries besides the U.S that perform executions
  • States that do allow legal executions

Current State:

I believe the death penalty should be abolished not only in the U.S but throughout the entire world. Researching this particular topic has made myself realize the importance of human life and rights, no matter what a person has done. I’m still in the process of finding more supportive reasons and evidence of opposing legal executions. I’m also still working on my thesis statement because I think it needs some work on the wording of it.

How To Make A Comedian

Content Description

  • Mental Illness in Comedians
  • The Link Between Comedy and Depression
  • Counterintuitiveness of Comedians
  • Are Comedians Really Depressed?
  • The Comedian Formula

Working Hypothesis 1

A troubled childhood plus a tragic backstory with some vulnerability added in is the key to  creating the best comedian, and the way to make the best comedian perfect is to exploit these traits to the ends of the Earth.

Working Hypothesis 2

Entertainment is a demanding, crushingly disappointing business to take part in, but through therapy and group discussion, the torment of comedians can now be expressed in a healthy way, and perhaps even inspire and create a better form of comedy without the risk of self-destruction.

Topics For Smaller Papers

  • Misconceptions of Mental Illness
    • What causes mental illness. Different types of mental illness and how they affect a person. How and why mental illness is not treated the same way as a physical illness of injury. How to educate those who are ignorant to the importance of treating mental health issues.
  • Suicide
    • The symptoms, signs, and aftermath of suicide for the victim and those closest to them. How to avoid and prevent this terrible thing and learning to cope when troubled people take their lives.
  • Performers and Mental Health
    • Do you have to be a little be crazy to be a performer? Probably. Everyone is a little nuts, performers are just better at using it to their advantage, or so it seems.
  • Substance Abuse
    • Why do performers and entertainers of all kinds turn to alcohol and drugs? Is there a connection between entertainment and substance abuse? Are these addictions rooted in the stress of performing, or something outside their trade?
  • Counterintuitiveness in Comedians
    • Those who have the ability to make us laugh and brighten our days are usually the ones who need it the most. While not every comedian is troubled, most, if not all, test for high levels of psychotic traits. They are complicated, as most people are, and are a mess of contradictions: happy/sad, introverted/extroverted, etc.

Current State

I have mixed feelings about my topic. While I am very passionate about entertainers and their struggles with mental illness, I feel like I narrowed the field so much that there isn’t enough diversity in my research. Most of the articles I found are talking about the same things, just reworded. I don’t want to change my subject, but I may look into expanding the pool to all performers as opposed to just comedians. If I can find more research on this specific field of individuals, I would like to continue with their stores, but in any case as long as the topic is entertainment in relation to mental health, I will be satisfied. That being said, I have found some interesting information about the biology of comedians and what makes them tick, in a sense, and hope to find more information on the various studies conducted on comedians. Along with that, there are a number of comedians I know and love that I had no idea were suffering from depression until I started researching, which made me all the more intrigued in the topic. This assignment did help me open up to new topics within my paper, and I plan to use these other topics to my advantage and broaden my research horizon. In the coming week, I want to look into these new topics, and hope to find information relevant to my paper.

Extreme Breastfeeding

Organized Content Description

  1. Extreme breastfeeding fad, children of all ages
  2. America’s controversy with parents who breastfeed older children
  3. Children damaged psychologically by extreme breastfeeding

Topics for Smaller Papers

  1. What is normal and accepted, breastfeeding in general
  2. Insight on families who extreme breastfeed

Practice Opening 1

When a newborn baby is welcomed into the world, nothing is more beneficial than the warmth of his mother’s arms and the nutrition of her milk. After a period of decline, the Center for Disease Control has recently reported that in 2013, up to 77% of American newborns were being breastfed. While to the delight of health care professionals this number has increased in recent years, so has a fad America is calling “extreme breastfeeding”.  The trend to breastfeed children up to and sometimes past 5 years of age is on the rise, stirring up controversies left and right. Psychologists and parents against this craze voice their opinions of what this could possibly do to a child, and how they could possibly grow up normal. While a mother thinks she is bonding and helping, she is really creating attachment issues and making it nearly impossible for her child to have a normal upbringing. The moment a child can eat regular fruits and vegetables, go to school, and verbally communicate their needs is the moment a mother should realize that breastfeeding no longer takes the front seat.

Practice Opening 2

It is no secret that the medical field encourages breastfeeding newborns and continuing throughout their infancy. It is a way to not only supply baby with food and nourishment, but a way for mother and baby to bond as well.  Thousands of controversies are argued daily by parents on social media and around town, but a recent controversy has left the majority of American parents stunned. What if a mother claimed that she bonded with her 5 year old son by breastfeeding him? A May 2012 TIME Magazine cover shows model Jamie Lynn Grumel posing with her preschool aged son, whom she is breastfeeding. The public display of what is being called extreme breastfeeding has sparked a mass amount of controversy in the parenting world. What does this boy do when he is at school? Does he eat real food? How will he grow up normal? Recently documented cases of extreme breastfeeding show children ages 5, 7, and even 8 years old breastfeeding, prompting psychologists to get involved. These children, who are in elementary school, will grow up with a different thought process. There is no way around the psychological effects this will have on children. They are being damaged by a parent who thinks that they are bonding with their child, when they are actually preparing them for a long, hard battle for a normal childhood.

Working Hypothesis 1

All over the country, healthy breastfed babies will grow into damaged breastfed children if the number of parents extreme breastfeeding continues to increase.

Working Hypothesis 2

The psychological repercussions will become evident as a child grows older in an extreme breastfeeding home, causing possible issues with school, peers, and self-esteem.

Current State of Research Paper

Although I know a lot about breastfeeding from majoring in the medical field, this topic has proven hard to convey in words. I need to do more research so I have more sources to cite, but I am looking forward to continuing this paper as the semester goes. My white paper gave me a chance to organize a lot of the jumble that was in my head and what was scribbled in my notebook.

Rape Culture: The Beginning And The End

Practice Opening 1

Rape culture is perpetrated by everyone. Females, males, mothers, fathers, students, teachers. It’s not their fault; it’s just the way of life in America. Rape culture has been integrated into our environment for so long that it has become a way of thinking. Now, the unpopular opinion or way of thinking is to go against this culture, or to be a prude. Because rape culture is ingrained in our minds, everyone is at risk of succumbing to its’ pressures and ideals, especially males. As Kate Harding explains in an interview with Rolling Stone, “American boys are all growing up in the same rape culture, so they’re growing up with this incredible sense of entitlement to women’s bodies.” By revealing this idea, Harding begins the discussion on rape culture and its’ roots, allowing others to form opinions from it, which is the whole point of a discussion. The creation of the conversation of rape culture is important to improving ideals, protecting victims’ rights, and preventing people from becoming rapists. This conversation is one that must be had, but there are obstacles. Some people do not want to talk about it. There are several reasons for this, whether it is that someone doesn’t think a rape culture exists, or they are too uptight to talk about it. The uptightness, however, may stem from being actually being a victim of rape culture. This sparks the counterintuitive point of the rape culture conversation; those who would be able to contribute experience and points to the discussion are most often found to be apprehensive to talk, in fear of experiencing the trauma all over again.

Practice Opening 2

Rape culture consists of many things. It’s getting catcalled while walking to work in the morning, or for wearing a certain type of clothing. It’s the model in a magazine with her legs spread open. It’s the misogynistic chants shouted by members of a fraternity. It’s blaming the victim and not the perpetrator. Some of these characteristics are recent, thanks to modern inventions, systems and technology. The blame game, however, is nothing new. The idea that the victim of sexual assault “wanted it” has been the justification of the perpetrators actions for a very long time. There have, however, been legal reforms to ensure the offender faces necessary consequences. Yet, as a society, we are quick to make excuses for them, thus adding to the rape culture. The question that must be confronted is: how can we prevent contributions to rape culture? The confrontation itself is the answer. Facing the facts is the first step in reforming the flaws ingrained in our culture.

Rape Culture Defined

Rape culture is defined as many things. It’s a selling point. It’s a trigger. But most of all, it’s something that controls our society, and has for a very long time.

“It’s a culture where we always identify with the person who’s accused of rape instead of identifying with the victim. When someone reports a rape, we immediately start investigating that person – the presumption is that the person is probably lying – before we even think to investigate the person being accused.”

The Trauma Doesn’t End After the Physical Assault Does

Survivors of rape and sexual assault face trauma and victimization even after they are assaulted. Members of their society, friends, family, law enforcement, etc. have all been taught the rules of rape culture, and therefore subject these teachings without even meaning to. It doesn’t matter what kind of person is assaulted, there are different ways they are traumatized throughout the rest of their life.

“I mean I wanted it. I must have wanted it because I got an erection from her stimulating me and from fear.”

“All the guys would laugh at me about it, calling me faggot for not enjoying it and I was like, “psych, I totally did enjoy it.” Then they high-fived me and told me I was cool and that Ms. Tupper was hot and they were jealous. It was the most popular I’d been in my whole life. It was the happiest I’ve ever been. And I wasn’t happy, but sometimes as a guy, if you want to fit in you have to hide your pain and humor is a great way of doing that and that’s why I sincerely think that rape is hilarious. Because I have to.”

The Difficulty With The Discussion of Rape

People often shy away from the sensitive subject of rape and it’s resulting in negative consequences. We are unable to learn and teach more about the prevention of and the acceptance that it is not the victim’s fault. We should be sensitive to the reasons that people are apprehensive to talk about it, but something must be done encourage the conversation without harming others.

“Student organizations representing women’s interests now routinely advise students that they should not feel pressured to attend or participate in class sessions that focus on the law of sexual violence, and which might therefore be traumatic. These organizations also ask criminal-law teachers to warn their classes that the rape-law unit might “trigger” traumatic memories.”

  1. The discussion of rape culture is something that must be had, despite the limitations that prevent the discussion from growing.
  2. The way to completely solve the present issue of rape culture is to begin sex education at a young age. How do we solve the issue with people in older generations? Education. It is a hard line to follow because some people have closed minds or are unwilling to join the discussion. For different reasons. Is forcing education and the discussion of rape culture actually just another form of victimization?

Topics for Smaller Papers

Definition/Classification Argument

-Rape culture definition and what supports and encourages the culture.

Cause/Effect Argument

-Different forms of victimization and how those lead to victims not wanting to report/talk about their assault and experiences.

Rebuttal Argument

-If a victim of rape decides to report the rape and later decides to retract it, he or she is seen as a liar who made false accusations. I could refute that argument by claiming they actually retracted because they didn’t want to be traumatized and victimized all over again during the process of prosecution.

Current State of Research Paper

Everything is still a work in progress. I found it hard to get all of my thoughts and ideas in order, and I am still developing a clear position I want to portray and discuss in my paper. Rape culture is a broad topic and there are multiple understandings of it, and I am really only discussing my understanding and basing that off of my research. I think that my research is strong and valid, although I will need to find more sources. I really want to focus on the discussion of rape culture and its roots. I anticipate my paper progressing into a large discussion of this culture and how to end it, but I am finding it difficult to come to a solution on how to do so.

The heroine use by Vancouver patients

The addiction of heroine after long term use

Psychological effect of heroine

An alternate approach to treating patients

Very unethical for government to support the site program

Practice opening 1)

Who knew heroine would soon be used to treat heroine addict patients? Heroin is one of the deadliest drug that does tremendous harm to human health. The use of heroine by patients must be eliminated to prevent further harm to patients health and help in keeping moral ethics. There are many countries such as Canada and many other in Europe which allow the world’s purest heroine to be used by the heroine addicts. Especially in a city called Vancouver, they have huge bunch of users. Have the doctors failed so much that they will let these patients slowly die in name of treatment. The governments have made it legal for any patient to shot heroine into their pulse as log as it’s done under medical supervision. This seems like something we all must be concerned of.

Practice opening 2)

There are so many heroine addicts who are suffering to be addict free and live healthy life once again. No matter how hard it is for patient to get rid of the habit, Is it ethical to give heroine to these patients to treat them. By giving heroine to heroine addict patient it won’t do any good but more harm to patients health and make them mentally depended upon it more. An alternate must be searched for in delicate case like this.

Hypothesis 1:
The harm reduction program keeps addicts out of jail and emergency rooms; however, it fails to prevent heroin addiction, which kills addicts or at least makes them critically ill.

Hypothesis 2:
A harm reduction program paired up with a rehabilitation facility, in addition to reducing crime and disease, might actually cure addicts of their addiction.

Topics for smaller paper:

  • How many patients were able to successfully recover from heroine treatement compared to died.
  • Different places the insite location has been open
  • How people had protest to stop this unethical use

Current state of research paper:

So far I have many different sources I can use to helps me with my argument on this paper. I may still need more information on other categories. Overall, I find this topic very interesting to research about. My biggest struggle is how I will make my paper flow smoothly. After several organization of content and getting more information, I will overcome it.
