My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development. Prior to this course I wasn’t used to having my writing extremely critiqued or receiving large amounts of feedback. Throughout the semester I did my best to actively engage in the feedback process with my professor. Many of my posts have replies from me and Professor Hodges regarding feedback. I was open to accepting any given feedback that would improve my work to eventually create the best-finished research essay possible. An example of this process can be seen in my Causal/Causal Rewrite. I had requested some guidance starting my causal argument, which Professor Hodges had provided and was very helpful. I even used an example of his, in which I corrected my citation. After I had written my draft, he then provided feedback on what to improve on in the rewrite.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

Throughout the semester my work demonstrated that I read critically and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas. When reading and analyzing various texts, I was able to create my own relationships and observations between those sources. One example where I feel I demonstrated this skill was in my Stone Money essay. I used multiple different types of sources including a podcast, an essay, and an article to form a relationship between the concept of money and people’s beliefs and faith regarding its value. I compared large stone currency used on the Island of Yap, to modern forms of money, such as bitcoin. I was able to use the provided sources to synthesize ideas from various communities or sources.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

My work has rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of other sources. Over the semester, I was able to improve the skills of rhetorically analyzing the deeper meaning of visual materials, such as videos. One example where I feel I demonstrated this skill was in my Visual Rhetoric Analysis. In this assignment, I carefully played through a 30-second advertisement, stopping at every second. I searched for every detail that could communicate its intended message and assumed that every detail in the video was intentional. Each detail was important, and I explained the director’s choice and effectiveness throughout the video. I explained the advertisement in a way that would thoroughly explain it to someone who hasn’t seen it. I closely analyzed the purpose, audience, and context of this 30-second advertisement in this assignment.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by understanding the complexities and nuances of an issue from multiple points of view and positions. One example where I feel I demonstrated this skill was in my Rebuttal Argument. I initially found it difficult to find academic sources to support my opposition. I had found one source in particular that I had used for my rebuttal, however Professor Hodges pointed out that it was not very strong. I then found another source after more searching, which made stronger claims regarding a different viewpoint of my claim. These sources helped me form a strong and scientifically sound rebuttal argument, in which I find flaws in the opposition’s argument to further my own. Finding these sources allowed me to analyze a different point of view and refute my opponent’s claims through science and research.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

My work this semester demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent the sources of my information with appropriate citations. One example where I feel I demonstrated this skill was in my Annotated Bibliography. This is a shortened list of all the sources that I used to create my research paper throughout the semester. For each source, there is the citation, a purposeful summary, and how I used it. When researching sources during the semester, I attempted to update my white paper with all of my sources and purposeful summaries, however, the process of searching for relevant and scholarly sources was time-consuming. Nevertheless, my annotated bibliography organized the sources used for my research paper. I was diligent to make sure that I properly cited each source and credited the proper authors in APA format.
