This is a good start, cfalover.
—Your (2) is actually broader than your (1), so that’s going in the wrong direction.
—Your (3) makes an important narrowing of the topic, but not enough. You could write a paper about the effects of COVID on those with physical illnesses AND a paper about the effects of COVID on those with mental illnesses. Choose one.
—Your (4) doesn’t significantly narrow the conversation, but it would be a good (1).
—Your (5) introduces a mysterious term: spout. Is DISTRUST the obstacle?
—Your (6) is just 5 again.

So, let’s start at 6, which is a valid and reasonable research topic.
It’s still a topic. Very broad and not quite specific enough in its claims.

How does an illness create an obstacle? If it made someone who lived remote and alone so sick that she couldn’t get to a hospital, THAT would be the illness creating an obstacle to treatment. OR, if the illness was so communicable even doctors wouldn’t dare go near the patient, THAT would be the illness creating an obstacle to treatment. But, neither is true of COVID. (For awhile, doctors were VERY reluctant to approach Ebola patients. And for awhile, doctors wouldn’t approach COVID patients because they didn’t have enough PPE, but that problem was eventually solved.) How does COVID create an obstacle?

If you mean DISTRUST IS THE OBSTACLE, then something other than COVID has created that distrust. Your actual list as I see it so far is:
    1. Even after developing safe vaccinations and effective therapies, people are still dying of COVID.
    2. People are still dying of COVID despite good medicine because they distrust health care professionals.
    3. People distrust health care professionals because . . . .

You may not be able to advance this list much farther without beginning your research, which can’t happen soon enough. But if you think you can get to (4), (5), and (6) without reading sources, give it a shot. This post is always a moving target, and I’ll be happy to provide more interference at any time. 🙂

One word of warning. When you choose a topic that is STILL ALIVE AND PROGRESSING, you’ll be distracted by LOTS of opinion pieces that SEEM like research, when they’re really just noise. Academic studies do exist to help you understand and describe the phenomenon of distrust of science. Seek them out.

You’ll need to update this post unless you prefer to defend this draft as your final effort, cfalover. At some point, preferably soon, you’ll respond to the feedback so I know you respect the process. Thanks!
