My Hypothesis-SpookyGhost

  1. training for middle distance runners
  2. multiple approaches to training for middle distance runners
  3. lack of balance between speed and mileage effecting the performance of a middle distance runner
  4. The required balance of the aerobic and anaerobic training required for success in the 800m race.
  5. The difference in training plans for an 800 meter runner with slow twitch muscle fibers vs fast twitch muscle fibers.
  6. For the greatest chance at success coaches must determine the type of muscle fibers an 800 meter runner has prior to calculating the balance between aerobic and anaerobic training.

Class Notes 9/16/21- Disneylover2002

Today in class, we talked about purposeful summaries. Purposeful summaries should not just summarize what you read; a purposeful summary should turn into an argument.  Don’t waste your time trying to write everything you see or hear on the outline. What you remember is the critical part, and what you forget is not needed. In addition, you should not cite the author when writing a purposeful summary. We also learned how to categorize our work on the blog and how to ask for feedback. We ended by going over the task we need to complete over the next couple of days.

Is Walmart Really Going Organic and Local?

It seems counterintuitive that Walmart is one of the top-selling groceries for organic foods when, in fact, their produce as well as other products are not actually organic. Walmart is typically the go-to market around here for food, since it is for more reasonable prices and it is close in distance. It also sells 18 percent of America’s groceries. So why would Walmart lie about the origin of its food?

Walmart was selling billions of dollars of “organic” food because of its own rule: produce is local if it is sold in the state that it is produced. When asked where the produce was coming from, Walmart listed three well-organized farms, but these farms do not produce organic produce. The supermarket apparently buys its produce from more broad farms because the prices are cheaper and they can resell it as organic, since it is from a “local” farm, and therefore make high profit. This is really unfortunate to the buyers though, because many people trust supermarkets to have organic produce and Walmart is one of the top sellers of organic produce, when in fact is it not. They only invest in other organic products such as milk or certain types of baby foods. This is completely counterintuitive since they are lying to the customers about the quality of their products, but being commercialized and seen as a number-one seller of organic produce.

How Mom’s Death Changed My Thinking About End-of-Life Care

It seems counterintuitive that doctors tend to take off life support for patients who will remain in a coma because it is too expensive and morally wrong to continue them on this type of treatment when the U.S. health system confirmed that there is an ample amount of money to support families in a decision of their choice. The fact that doctors make families believe this is morally wrong and insensitive.

When people have a family member or a loved one hospitalized and end up on life support, it is emotionally tragic and a huge hardship. It is a huge decision to make whether you want to continue this type of treatment and to determine when it is the right time to let them pass. Many doctors, once confirming the patient has a low chance of recovery, tend to advice against keeping patients on life support for a long period of time because the cost is high and the multiple machines are uncomfortable to be hooked up to. This is counterintuitive though, because like stated before, the health care system has plenty of money to support families in their decisions. Why tell patients this if we have the money?

Many doctors believe patients have passed on once they are put on life support, but it is hard for families to see that. They need to be supported when going through this, and the health care system agrees with this. Hospitals need to start supporting the wishes of patients and their families more sensitively. Everyone deals with death differently.

What life lessons go against common sense or beliefs?

It seems counterintuitive that if money CAN buy happiness, then why are so many wealthy people unhappy? In my opinion, having a reasonable amount of money (not overly wealthy) makes you appreciate the things you already have in life more. If you are very wealthy, you can buy whatever you like, but it doesn’t necessarily make every person happy. Everybody has different things that make them happy. Overall though, the things that bring you long-term happiness generally cannot be bought. True happiness comes from within, not just from possessions.

Some people think that once they have an ample amount of money, that buying all of the items they wanted will thrill them. For some, that is true. For others, not so much. Happiness comes in many different shapes in forms, but money cannot buy happiness. You need to realize what makes you happy.

Practice Opening-Minutemen14

Nigeria is haunted by what seems to be an inevitable dead end in eradicating the Poliovirus. False information and an overall fear of vaccinations has turned into guerrilla warfare when battling the poliovirus, rather than one common goal against it. Civilians do not know where to turn as they either fear that the vaccination is harmful or are skeptical of those giving out the doses. Without proper information and so many rumors circulating, it is impossible to have any cohesion to stop this virus. Many get hung up on the possibility of paralysis or death due to vaccine, when in fact the virus harms/kills much more annually. Therefore the only effort to be made is to somehow reach out and capture the attention of Nigerian civilians to stand against this virus once and for all. Without common trust or reliable information, these people are at the mercy of the rescuers around them to make decisions for what is best for themselves and their families.

There is no “Art of Eradicating Polio”, groups affected by violence and dishonesty will almost forever stay reluctant- as seen in Nigeria. Nigeria’s corruption has created great division within the country. Trusted officials have spread rumors stating that Polio vaccines lead to a widespread of health problems. Other “theories” have spread such as the widely believed rumor that “Westerners are trying to eradicate the Muslim population” with the vaccine. There are a multitude of hate crimes connected to the vaccine such as bombings, murders, and shootings. These unfortunate conditions will only bread for resilience, therefore keeping Polio an ongoing issue.

The spread of polio certainly will never come to an end if people choose not to get vaccinated. With such little amount of cases of polio may seem good, it is still out in the world. The main factor as to why this virus is still around is because of those who choose not to get vaccinated. Just because polio isn’t in America doesn’t mean the virus is less deadly in children. By getting the vaccine would help the chance of spreading the disease. People also fear vaccines because of possible injuries or illnesses. In countries like Nigeria, the citizens don’t trust the vaccine. It is unfortunate to see children get such a horrendous disease because of misinformation.

Task: Purposeful Summaries

The Purposeful Summary Task

You’ll be writing Purposeful Summaries of three counterintuitive articles as discussed in today’s Purposeful Summary Lecture. Links to dozens of candidate articles can be found in the sidebar of the blog. You may make use of those articles, or follow a trail from those links to find sources of your own. In either case, provide links inside your own post to guide me to your sources.

  1. Read the Purposeful Summary Lecture carefully and examine the models there as your guide for good summary.
  2. Read Apple’s Face Palm Bug” as another example of a counterintuitive event.
  3. Select three articles from the Counterintuitivities list in the blog’s sidebar.
  4. Write Purposeful Summaries of the three articles. (See instructions below.)
  5. Publish your work in a new post.

Notes

You don’t need to be sincere. As long as your writing indicates an understanding of the counterintuitive nature of the topic, and summarizes the source material in such a way that your entries emphasize that counterintuitivity, I will consider any crazy conclusions you come to.

Semester-long Strategies to consider

If you’re using this exercise to investigate possible counterintuitive topics for your Semester-long Research Position paper, you need to answer the question, “Is there anything further to say about this topic once I have completed a summary of the first source? Does the topic interest me enough to spend two months investigating? Will I be able to find a range of sources (not just a number of sources) from both academic and non-academic publications?”

Forbidden Rhetoric for this Exercise

  • DO NOT begin by citing the article you’re summarizing.
  • In other words, DO NOT begin by saying “In the article, ‘Is This Photo Ethical?’ the author describes what happened in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.”
  • DO NOT say that the author “talks about” an earthquake.

Required Rhetoric

  • Begin all three summaries with the phrase “It seems counterintuitive that . . . .”
  • Use what you’ve learned about (for example) the earthquake, its aftermath, the throng of reporters who descended on Haiti, the roles they have to balance to be both humane and professional. Make an argument of your own, very possibly one that contradicts any position the original author may have taken.
  • Suppress the identity of the article and its author(s).
  • Write as if you are describing the subject matter first hand.
  • Argue, demonstrate, persuade; in other words, use the material you are summarizing for a purpose!

The Task

Before class THU FEB 09, create your own summaries of three counterintuitive articles. You may make use of the topics linked to the sidebar, or follow those links to find sources of your own. In either case, provide links inside your own post to guide me to your sources.

EXERCISE DETAILS

  • DUE: THU FEB 09 (11:59 pm WED FEB 08).
  • Publish your assignment in two categories: Purposeful Summaries and the category for your username found under Author.
  • Give your post the title Summaries–Username, substituting your own username, of course.
  • Word count is irrelevant, but thorough analyses of whatever length will be graded higher than superficial writing that wastes words. Complex ideas briefly expressed are rewarded best.
  • Start each summary with the statement: “It seems counterintuitive that . . . .”
  • You will receive just one grade for this draft, which is intended to diagnose your abilities and needs. If you request feedback, you’ll receive guidance to help you improve your grade, one time, with a Rewrite.
  • There will be no formal Rewrite assignment two weeks from now.
  • Customary late penalties. (0-24 hours 10%) (24-48 hours 20%) (48+ hours, 0 grade)
  • Non-Portfolio Grade (20% category)

Practice Opening – gingerbreadman27

The art of eradicating polio is becoming an increasingly difficult task plagued by instability and counter efforts in the last remaining polio strongholds. Nigeria, one of the remaining strongholds, is plagued by violence caused by a overlapping mess of cultures and ethnics groups. Combined with a discredited and powerless government makes the work all but impossible for a handpicked team of specialists tasked with administering vaccines door to door everyday. This team has become the target of many attacks and efforts to thwart the vaccination effort due to propaganda spread groups and people not convinced that their intentions are good. Due to this vaccination efforts are becoming increasingly difficult as instability and effort against the vaccination become more prominent.

Haruna Katata

The extermination of polio is increasingly difficult because of the result of fear-mongering within Nigeria. Haruna Kaita, a professor of pharmacy at Ahmadu Bello University, is known for spreading false information against the polio vaccine. There have been misconceptions stating that the vaccine contained birth control, HIV, birth defecting or, cancerous substances. This has created propaganda within the Muslim community fearing that the polio vaccine might be an intended American genocide against them. Although Kaita has recognized his bad influence, fear-mongering the polio vaccine is a never-ending battle within the Nigerian community. It is detrimental to the lives of Muslims because it stops the overall positive influence within groups to choose to be vaccinated.

Polio disease has effected the human population before twentieth century began. This disease causes permanent paralysis which hinders the nervous system inactive and has a slight chance of one’s death to occur. Its influence has spread from poor neighborhoods in India to even war-torn area created by war itself in Afghanistan.

But the main reason for Polio continuing to be widespread as it is today by people ignoring the use of vaccines provides training for white blood cells to fight off polio better than unvaccinated white blood cells. The vaccine rarely cause paralysis which is one out of 3 million people can get it. The distrust between the human populous and health organization. One instance of the distrust was in Nigeria by its contaminated fluid would play into the idea of eradicating Muslims living there which this reaction made the Nigeria Government to close down vaccine exports.

The provision of vaccines affected how many people are used to conspiracies that vaccines are dangerous and could cause side effects such as autism. The non-profit organizations and governments need everyone informed of this vaccine openly to the public that can save lives and give evidence of the vaccine helping people through the scientific method to prove the conspiracist wrong.
