It seems counterintuitive that showering could actually kill an individual, but for an older person, this idea could be true. As one ages, the risk of falling becomes higher and a common cause of death among elders is falling. Therefore, this notion of dying in a shower, caused by a serious slip and fall, might not be too far-fetched. Falls have caused some elderly people to suffer from a broken shoulder, leg, or even to become crippled. Similar to this concept, there is a group, the New Guineans’, that have a very real fear in their community. They are adamant not to set up tents under trees that appear to be dead for fear of that tree, possibly, one day, crashing on top of their tent and harming them in some way. For this particular group, their fear is real and they do not believe they are being too cautious or careful at all. This mindfulness is because New Guineans do not have medical care or police to help them in case of any incident that might occur. They are actually looking ahead, being considerate and protective of their community.

It seems counterintuitive that one would think cutting down trees to make paper products would worsen the carbon dioxide problem in our world because trees consume the harmful carbon dioxide and release oxygen for us to breathe. Despite this apparent faulty premise, when you consider that new trees can be planted and that paper products, along with trees, hold carbon, the excessive use of paper products does not seem all that bad. China even assists as our ally in our excessive paper use, since China imports billions of dollars worth of our paper to package their products that they sell right back to us. Also, office paper can decompose into methane in our nation’s dumps, which is a strong greenhouse gas, just as cutting down and turning old-growth forests into paper releases carbon dioxide. Even though this is happening, many are still using lots of paper.

It seems counterintuitive that there is an actual safe zone in Vancouver where addicts are able to administer illegal drugs to themselves without being arrested and with the luxury of an on-site nurse if any problems were to occur. These addicts are given prescribed heroin doses daily to keep them at a level where they will be comfortable enough and where their addiction will not force them to go to some other darker place in search of the fix that they crave. This is a harm-reduction program which started in Europe and it is meant to help the worst addicted individuals cope with their heroin dependency.
This program was built to protect the community from the addicts who would, otherwise, potentially, be terrorizing neighborhoods if they were not satisfied with the amount of heroin in their system. The addicts could and would steal, or even worse, to get their drug. That being said, heroine is still being legally handed over to drug users on the street at safe zones.
Hi Professor Hodges! Could you let me know if these are good purposeful summaries? If they are not, could you tell me what I could do to make them better and improve my grade? Also, would I be able to rewrite them if corrections are needed?

Thanks for your question, ChickenNugget.
They’re good overall Summaries, but they can be improved.

Showering Can Kill

—This is good overall, but the transition to the New Guinea anecdote is abrupt and odd. It COULD BE completely expected and revelatory if you prepare readers for it. ESPECIALLY in one-paragraph essays, you can “give away” the surprise—ALMOST!—to great effect.
—Suppose, for example, you said in your first sentence: “For the same reason New Guineans never pitch a tent under a tree, elderly Americans should take baths instead of showers.” OR, since I forced you to open your essay with a certain phrase, “It seems counterintuitive that for the same reason New Guineans . . . .”
—Your next choice would be whether to start with the New Guinea anecdote or with the death in the shower material.
—See how much better it is to map the territory in advance? Give your readers a glimpse of the comparison without giving away the equivalence?

—Not clear which side you’re on here, ChickenNugget. First of all, it seems COMPLETELY INTUITIVE that cutting down trees (which absorb CO2 and release O2) would WORSEN our “carbon dioxide problem.” So, your first sentence is a puzzle I can’t solve. Your second sentence makes more sense. Planting trees to make paper is a good idea. Paper holds carbon, so that’s good. So . . . maybe what’s counterintuitive is the COMPLAINT against paper? What you need here in a very short essay is a clear choice. Until you decide whether to back paper DESPITE its downsides, or promote the alternatives to paper, readers will be confused.

—Here you’ve done an excellent job of identifying the counterintuitive angle: “addicts are able to administer illegal drugs to themselves without being arrested and with the luxury of an on-site nurse.”
—You maintain that amazed-but-respectful angle throughout. Clearly your best approach of the three.
