What first strikes me about your Hypothesis post, LittleCow, is how easily it could have been produced working backwards. It cannot be argued that background music affects our mood, and so it stands to reason that different music would affect us differently. There must be variation both in music types and in personal preference as well. No doubt retailers know exactly what type of music puts their customers in a “buying mood.” And surely the music that helps me write, or read, or study, or sell clothes to customers, will not be the same as the music that helps you.

My primary question would be: what’s counterintuitive about that? It seems completely understandable. I hope you won’t be tempted to write an essay that merely demonstrates what you already believe to be true. Stay open to surprise. Maybe music that people don’t care about is best for studying (on the theory that the less they pay attention to it, the more it works on their mood subliminally and without distracting them)? Or something. I hope you’ll discover something unexpected.

We’ll talk more about this at our Conference later today. See you then!
