A problem in Vancouver arises, concerning heroin addicts committing crimes to support drug-related habits. “Free heroin for addicts” is a service program with the intention of preventing heroin addicts from engaging in drug-related behavior because Vancouver experiences high rates of drug-related crime. Drug addicts face difficulties living a normal day-to-day lifestyle. Such problems include (and are not limited to): holding jobs, maintaining relationships, and obtaining overall stability. Individuals addicted go above and beyond, finding any means necessary to find “a fix.” Going to such lengths, heroin addicts often commit crimes in the process. Breaking an entering and stealing are only a few crimes to name a few. “Free heroin for addicts” provides heroin addicts with free heroin to keep crime on the low but the provider service still has an array of flaws. The problem with this program is giving heroin addicts what they want. Giving heroin addicts free heroin certainly keeps crime low, but the temporary solution does not aid in the process of helping addicts better long term lifestyle choices. On the flip side, by providing heroin, addicts will be off the streets, which in turn will prevent heroin addicts from committing crimes. This will also keep the heroin users out of hospitals—which also feeds into addiction. The “free heroin for addicts” program gives people free heroin in the cleanest way possible, in turn, fixes city crime but not the addiction heroin addicts face.

Revised

Heroin addicts within Vancouver are committing crimes to feed their addiction. Even with programs to help stop addicts such as “free heroin for addicts”, the crime rate among addicts is extremely high. With such strong addiction addicts cannot function normally throughout the day whether its a job, social interaction or personal relationship. They are inevitably consumed in a panicked, limitless approach to finding a way to get their next high by any means necessary. The “free heroin for addicts” group solves the problem of hazardous panic, but it doesn’t have anything to do with getting users off of the drug. Another “plus” is that it would keep these users out of hospitals where treatment is basically useless and only takes up time and money from the hospital that could be used for other patients. This would ultimately heal the city, but not the users themselves.

Heroin addicts in Vancouver are committing crimes to support their drug usage. Their daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are harder to maintain, which drives them to do whatever they must to get their hands on heroin, which includes breaking the law. The laws broken include those of breaking and entering as well as stealing. The “Free Heroin for Addicts” program is trying to prevent this phenomenon by willingly providing the drug to addicts so they will be less likely to commit crimes. However, the program is not targeting the problem at hand as it won’t help to ween these addicts off using heroin. It is instead only trying to save the city from rising crime rates. This method of assistance will limit the number of heroin users that are admitted to the hospital due to contamination from laced drugs or unsanitary needles. This reduces the chances of addicts finding themselves unable to afford hospital bills. This program will provide people with clean and free heroin, which will in turn fix city crime rates but not the addiction that these people face.
