The view fades in of a shot of family pictures on a table. In most of these pictures, there is a young boy, only a few years of age and in another picture is a couple in wedding attire, presumably the parents of the boy. In all the pictures, everyone is smiling and seems happy.

0:05

As the camera pans across the photos, there is a dark hallway being lit only with the lights from another room. The light is not wide so it can be assumed that there is a door catching most of the light that is being given off. From that it can be assumed that whatever is happening in the other room was not meant to be seen however sight of this even has slipped out. A shadow that is cast on a staircase moves across the light in what seems to be a backward motion. Just as a guess, the shadow is probably being cast by the mother and wife that appeared in the pictures on the table.

0:09

The child who was probably the one in the pictures is sitting on the stairs in his pajamas with a toy in his hand. Given the lighting and his pajamas, it is most likely night time and past the time that he should be asleep. He is clearly visible, being illuminated by the light from the other room which means he probably has a clear view of what is happening in the other room.

0:10

He looks up from playing with his toy to see what is happening in the other room. He is near the top of the stairs which means he probably came to sit there after being woken up from what is going on in the other room.

0:12-0:13

The shot moves to behind the child revealing a different angle of light coming from the other room. Another shadow is visible, unclear if it is the same shadow from 0:05. The shadow moves forward relatively quickly as well as moving its arm quickly as well. Given the setting and the movements of the two shadows in the video so far, it can be assumed there is some type of dispute between the parents of this child and that is the reason he is awake.

0:14-0:18

The shot is now a close up of the face of the child. He is staring intently at the event that is happening in the other room with a rather cautious look on this face. He takes his eyes from the other room for a quick second to return back to his toy possibly to try to forget about what is happening yet still with the same look on his face.

0:19-0:23

He is startled by something, probably a loud noise, and returns his gaze to the other room, this time with a very concerned and scared look on his face. His eyes widened, his mouth opens slightly and his breathing has increased. Looking at his eyes, you see them dart quickly between two points of focus most likely each of his parents. His eyes move from a high to low position twice. One of the parents is probably on the ground. It can only be assumed that one parent has struck the other in an act of violence. The boy is in awe trying to understand why one of his parents has hit the other.

0:24

The shot fades with the boy still looking at his parents to a black screen with the question “Children have to sit by and watch. What’s your excuse?”

At the beginning of this clip you can still hear the husband/dad yelling, “Dinner ready is pizza!” The father seems angry the mother made him pizza for when he comes home from work. At 0:10 – 0:11 you see the young boy sitting on the stairs. The young boy may be their son, shown from the pictures earlier. He is holding a yellow truck, possibly his favorite toy. While he is holding the truck, he’s looking to his left. He could be watching or looking at his parents argue. The look of the boy’s face seems concerned. At 0:16 the boy is now looking down. Maybe looking at his toy to keep his eyes away from his parents fighting. In the background you can hear the mother crying. At 0:19 the boy jumps up and looks back towards the left side, possibly back at his parents. You hear a loud sound, a sound you would hear after hitting someone or something. The dad may of hit the mom, since the mom began crying.

0:20 – 0:24

Through 0:20 and 0:24 the little boy’s face seems scared or shocked. He’s still looking in the other direction, may still be the direction of his parents arguing. You also hear the father yell, “thats what hurts,” while the mom is crying. The dad may of hit the mom, while the son was still watching.

0:25 – 0:27

Domestic Abuse

0:01

Dog lying on some sort of table. Looks injured. In the backround is a faded bloody bandage over one of the legs. It could be animal abuse or some type of accident.

0:02

There is now a vetrenarian in the picture and a woman who I am assuming is the owner of the dog. It is relieving to see them because it may not be animal abuse if the owner is present. Could have been an accident.

0:06

The dog looks scared. You cant see the hand of the woman we identified as the owner petting the dog to give it comfort. The dog is in pain and the vet and woman are trying to keep it calm.

0:10

The vet is looking up to the woman mouthing something. It could be in reference to what happened or what the injury is.

0:12

Now the woman is shown. She looks very sad. Even though the dog is alive and looks like it will recover, she looks very depressed and down. Her hair is messy and in her face and she looks tired and very sad.

0:18

The woman raises the right side of her head and we see her full face. She is shown with a black eye. She has obviously been hit and the dog could have been hit by the same abuser. Animal and human abuse is now a huge possibility.

0:22

The woman looks over to a boy. It looks to be her son. He looks very shaken up and tired.

This videos sole purpose was to bring attention to domestic and animal abuse. Just because there is one abuse does not mean both are not taking place. In the video the woman and the dog were both abused by someone in the same house as the boy, dog, and female.

A02: Visual Rhetoric- wildcuttlefish

0:03

There’s a bunch of middle schoolers in a school bus. Majority of the students in the bus are white boys. However, one of the boys that is wearing a sweater is off of his seat and in the middle of the aisle with his hands holding onto one of the seats so he does not fall down. A boy sitting to the right of him is on the edge of the seat, leaning towards the sweater boy. He probably pushed the sweater boy off. In the back you can see the bus driver looking at the boys with her mirror to see what happened.

0:05

The boy with the sweater is trying to get back onto his seat. The bus driver is still watching. A girl who is sitting in front of the boys turns around and looks angry towards sweater boy.

0:07

The girl is now talking to sweater boy with her mouth wide open. The bus driver is no longer looking through the mirror but is physically turning around to watch. An arm, which is a boy’s arm, emerges from the right behind the sweater boy with a fist. A student in the first row is peeking back at the commotion.

0:08

The fist hits the sweater boy. The girl that was yelling shuts her mouth. She is not concerned for him though. Instead, her hand is on her hair, sweeping it to the side. The sweater boy turns around to look at the boy who hit him. Sweater boy’s facial expression is not furious. His mouth is open like he has no words to say. I can tell he does not want any trouble. Also, judging from sweater boy’s appearences, he looks frail and has nerdy classes. Another kid sitting on the second row turns around to look after the hit. There was probably a large sound when sweater boy got hit. You can see the bus driver’s face clearly now as she watching the whole thing.

0:10

The arm that hit sweater boy is pointing to the bottom left corner of the screen. He wants sweater boy to move.

0:11

Sweater boy listens and gets off of his seat. Some kids are turning back smiling.

0:14

Sweater boy sits down in the seat on the left side.

0:15

The frame changes and captures some students somewhere in the front seats. A girl with blonde short curly hair is looking back with her mouth slighly opened. I know she is looking at all the commotion. Another blonde girl sitting next to her with straight hair is also looking at that direction because I see the back of her head.

0:18

Sweater boy’s neck is being grabbed by someone from behind. Sweater boy’s hands is grabbing the hands that is stranggling his neck.

0:19

The frame switches to another kid from the front peeking behind the seat.

0:19

The frame changes to a kid in the backseat looking forwards with his hands together. His eyes are a bit wide. He looks concerned and maybe speechless.

0:22

The kid in the back seat looks down. You can tell he does not support how sweater boy is being treated but he doesn’t look anymore. It’s like he does not know what to do but to keeps quiet.

0:23

The camera catches more faces of the students in the bus. Two guys whose eyes is looking forward, slightly to the right. They look concerned with their mouth slightly parted but they look like they don’t know what to do.

The purpose of the video is to expose to people that often many times when students see someone get bullied, they just watch blankly because they do not know what to do. They are either scared or holding back. Furthermore, the video is targetted to the parents, encouraging them to teach their kids to speak out when they see bullying take place.

0:04 – We see a bunch of kids on a school bus. The sun is out so it’s a possibility the children may be going to school or on their way home from school. If you look in the left-hand corner, you see someone with a fuchsia hoodie on, so I assume it’s a girl standing up out of her seat. You also see a little boy in the middle of the aisle out of his seat as well. From the looks of it, the children are rowdy and disruptive.

0:05- A second later, you see the young boy who was in the middle of the aisle scrunched down now standing up. Right in front of him, you see a young girl turn around. The facial expression on the girl’s face shows that she is aggravated and is about to react to the movement of the young boy.

0:07- As the young girl turns around more to face the young boy who was once standing in the middle of the aisle, a young boy behind him with a grey shirt on reaches his arm out to the boy. Is he about to hit him? Or stopping him from interacting with the young girl who may already be in a bad mood?

0:08- Whether the boy hit him or may have just tapped the young boy in front of him, he got his attention as he turns around to face him, taking all of his attention off the girl. He looks as if he has been disrupted and confused. Also, all the other children turn back in their chairs to see what is going on. Did he hit the young boy? May this altercation involve bullying? If all the other children attention is now on the young boy with the glasses and the other boy who may have hit him, an incident of bullying might have occurred.

0:10-0:13- The young boy who was either hit or tapped by the other boy, gets out of his seat. It seems like the young boy might be standing up for himself by fighting back.

0:14 – The young boy doesn’t fight back or defends himself. Instead he sits in another seat away from the young girl that he was disrupting and away from the young boy who may be bullying him.

0:16 – As the young boy is sitting in his seat, another boy reaches from behind him and grabs him by the neck, in a choking manner. The young boy who was in the aisle and is now getting choked may actually be getting bullied by all the children on the school bus when all he is trying to do is make friends.

0:17-0:18 – The boy with the black shirt continues to choke the young boy by his neck. We now see the young boy grab the boy with the black shirt arm as if he is trying to stop him from choking him. From the looks of it, the boy has a tight grip on his neck and he fails at stopping him. This is obviously an incident involving bullying.

0:19 – Another young boy, who is a bystander in this situation turns around to see the boy getting choked. His facial expressions shows fear and that he is afraid of getting involved. Could he be next? Has he already been bullied by the same two boys?

0:20-0:23 – The focus of the camera is now all around the school bus. It shows all the students on the bus as they look frightened by what is going on but yet doesn’t stop the boy from choking him. Still the bus driver hasn’t stopped the bus to see what is going on. All of the children on the bus are being bystanders as they witness a young boy being choked on the school bus by a peer.

0:24- The last seconds of the commercial shows a black screen with the words “Teach your kids how to be more than a bystander.” It is big and is written in bold letters which expresses how urgent this message truly is.

0:01- Two high school aged girls appear on screen. Both seem in a good mood from their smiles across their faces. Both walking down what appears to be steps from a building, perhaps they are leaving the high school that they attend.

0:04- A young boy with a backpack appearing to say something to the blond haired girl. If they were leaving high school perhaps he asked about a homework problem or if the blond girl did well on a test he was saying “congrats” to her. It must have been something nice because the blonde girl had a smile on her face.

0:07- One friend turns to the blond girl to talk about something. The topic could have ranged from the weather or something particular like the boy that just passed. The blond girls smile gets even bigger. The boy might like the girl and she is flustered.

0:11- Casual football practice of what appears to be high school aged players. The coach has his mouth open and it might appear that he is directing the players to do something like a play or run.

0:14- The Coach turned to the blond girl. The blond girl’s expression changes. The coach must have said something to her she didn’t like. May be the blond girl had a brother and quit and the coach did not like that and said something negative to her.

0:19- Escalator in what appears to be a shopping center. The trio of girls are going down the escalator while two boys are going up. The two boys are discussing something that has to do with one of the girls because they point and look at the group.

0:22-0:24- The two boys point to the blond haired girl. They speak to each other about something that is in reference to the girl. Maybe they are talking about something on her shirt or something she did in class. The girl’s facial expression seems to express stress or worry.

0:25-0:36- The trio of girls appear to be going into a movie theater. The blond girl hands the worker her ticket and is happy but then the man says something to her that changes her expression. It might be that her ticket is a fake or that it is for the wrong movie. The man continues to stare at her as she walks away.

0:40-0:42- An older an cleaning tables stares at the blond girl. Perhaps it is her dad or a relative. He says something to her. The girls face turns with a expression of worry. Maybe something happened that includes both of them. If it is her dad could something be going on at home?

0:02 – A girl is walking down a hallway. I am confident in saying that she is in school, perhaps walking to her first class. She is surrounded by lockers, and carries a book bag. Although her back is turned to the camera, her clothing choice and the children that surround her tell me that she is presumably between 12 and 15 years old.

0:03 – The same girl walking to class is stopped in the hallway, facing two other girls. Her stance is wide, her legs farther than shoulder width apart. Her right hand is raised but not outward as if to touch the other girls. Could she be telling a story to her friends, excited, using her hands for emphasis?

0:05 – We see the face of the girl we have followed since the beginning for the first time. She has glasses, and her face is contorted. We see her expression as a mixture of disgust and perhaps fear, as if she has seen a spider and although revolted, she is paralyzed and unable to kill it. If she is telling a story, she is certainly animated and believable.

0:08 – Our main character is now kneeling, one hand on her bag. The camera angle has moved out, we can see she is still with the two girls she met in the hallway. Perhaps she wants to show them something she brought to school with her, or we may have caught her midway as she kneels down to tie her shoe.

0:09 – We clearly see the contents of the girls book bag strewn across the hallway, she must have dropped it. But looking to the right side of the screen, one of the girls we don’t know much about has put her foot on the backpack of our protagonist. The other girl, still standing as well, is off to the left. Neither of them bends down to help clean up the mess of the backpack.

0:10 – One of the standing girls, particularly the one with her foot on the bag, has picked up a strand of the kneeling girls’ hair. She is just holding it, and looking down at the girl who is also looking down, presumably to gather up her things. Although I am not sure, I don’t think that the standing girls are friends of the main character after all.

0:12 – The camera switches to a view of the hallway of what is most definitely a school. Children walk by with backpacks and no emotions. No one seems to be looking in the direction of our main character.

0:15 – One of the standing girls has taken our kneeling girl’s glasses. If you look hard enough, you can see a smirk on the standing girl as she holds the glasses in her hands like she is playing with a toy. The girl from the beginning of the video holds her hand to her forehead. I assume she is unable to see without these glasses, and she wears a look of desperation. It is clear that the standing girls are not here to be nice to the kneeling girl.

0:19 – The standing girl to the left has knelt down now as well, with her hand on our main character’s head, as if to turn it. Still cleaning up her backpack, the kneeling girl looks reluctant to turn her head. She is staring straight down. At this point, we see a multitude of other students in the background, although not one of them is interested in what is going on. Could it be all that bad is no one is paying any attention?

0:22 – The kneeling girl continues to kneel, we see that she is still without her glasses.  She still has a look of hopelessness and frustration. The two girls she originally met in the hallway are standing above her with smug smiles on their faces. It is apparent that the two girls are in some way shape or form scaring our main character. The odd thing about this specific view is that we now see the scene from another perspective. They are farther away now, and there is a frame of some sort around the girls, as if one was looking through a window or a hole in the wall. Maybe the director of the scene thought another view was appropriate to convey the message.

0:23 – The camera view changes to a close up of a girl’s face. She is not one that we have seen before. Around her face is the same border from the previous shot. Looking closely, it appears that she is looking in a mirror. Her expression is somewhat unreadable. She is not visibly happy or sad. It could be said that she seems deep in thought, maybe studying her own face for reasons of vanity.

0:28 – A white screen takes the frame with the words “Teach your kids how to be more than a bystander”, with the link to a bullying website below.

The scared and defeated look of the first girl is justified, as this is an ad for bullying. While there were some questionable moments in the beginning few shots, it became clearer throughout. Upon listening to the audio of the advertisement, name calling and snickering can be heard from the bullying girls. The girl in the mirror is the bystander that the end shot speaks of. She sees it happen, she hears it happen, but she does nothing. Not one student in the hallway stops to help the kneeling girl as she is tormented for what I assume is not the first time.

00:00- The ad starts by showing a young man maybe in his late teens wearing what looks to be wearing a baseball hat and holding a baseball bat. There is a man sitting in the bleachers as a spectator.

00:01- An older man maybe in his early 40’s is also holding a baseball bat, wearing a baseball hat and batting gloves. This man may be the boys father or coach.

00:02- Both of them are getting ready to hit baseball and are in mid swing. The older man is showing the boy how to hit.

00:04- The same people are now on a front lawn of a house practicing playing football. The boy is throwing to the older man and is wearing a football jersey.

00:06- The boy throws the football to the older gentleman who catches it.

00:07- The same older gentleman is now suited up as a catcher with the catchers glove and pads. He is getting ready to catch something.

00:08- Now the boy is pitching to the older man who is kneeling down. The boy throws a strike down the middle of the plate.

00:10- Now they are playing hockey in what looks like to be the same house as where they were playing football. The Older man is playing as the goalie and the younger kid is trying to score on him.

00:12- They are now playing soccer on a field where the boy score again on the older man.

00:14- The boy is now playing basketball on an outdoor basketball course against another boy.

00:15- The boy then passes the ball to the older gentleman who then shoots the ball and scores.

A girl with red hair appears to be in the bathroom facing a mirror. She has her hands in front of her face like she is washing her face or crying.

0:02

Now there is a black boy in his teenage years, average dressed, that looks like he is studying for school. It looks like he lives in a nice home.

0:04

Now they are showing another kid, again in his teenage years, who is taking pills. He looks like a pretty big, muscular kid who is wearing a varsity jacket so we know he plays a sport.

0:05

The video goes back to the first person of the start of the video, the girl with red hair. She also looks like she is in her teenage years, and appears she is taking pills as well.

0:07

The video now goes back to the black kid who is also taking pills. Can all these 3 people who are taking pills be going through a rough phase in their life that explains why they are using drugs? Perhaps they are abusing these drugs. Do they really need it or get prescribed it?

0:08

The video switches back to the big kid wearing the varsity jacket, the girl with red hair, and another two kids that are in their teenage years as and it looks like they are talking to each other in a classroom. The girl with red hair is starring at the kid with that varsity jacket. He is holding a bottle of pills.

0:10

The camera zooms in on the girls face as maybe she has a crush on the boy or that she just wants the pills.

0:11

The video switches to a different classroom where the black kid and the girl with red hair are together in the same room. The black boy has his books in front him on his desk where you can see a bottle of pills underneath his books. The boy is looking at his side for some reason. The girl appears to just be sitting doing her work on her desk.

0:12

The boy looks over to his other side while he grabs his bottle of pills underneath his books.

0:13

The camera again zooms in on the girl starring at the black kid while she is taking off one of her earphone plug. We now know these 3 kids go to the same school.

0:14

The camera zooms out. The boy is taking pills in the classroom while the girl is starring at him. This girl seems to want the pills and has a drug related problem.

0:16

The video switches to what it looks like to be outside the high school where the girl with red hair is standing on her phone where another girl accidently bumps into her and you can see a bottle of pills that comes flying out of the other girl jacket.

The girl with red hairs picks up the bottle and looks at it maybe trying to figure out what type of pills they are. It is illegal to take or use prescription pills that aren’t prescribed to you.

The girl slips the bottle in her jacket and looks like she has sort of a happy, evil smirk on her face. This isn’t a good look; she obviously looks like she is going to take the pills or possibly sell them, which is also illegal.

The video switches to a funeral with a group of teenage kids surrounding a coffin. You can see a picture frame on the coffin but the camera is not close enough to see who is in the picture. Can the person who died be the girl who picked up those pills that didn’t belong to her?

The camera zooms in on the black kid, the kid who was wearing the varsity jacket, and the girl who dropped her pills by accident bumping into the girl with red hair. All three kids are standing next to each other. Is it maybe because they are friends or just all have all the same drug addiction problem? We don’t see the girl with red hair, is it maybe that she is in the coffin?

The video ends off by zooming on the picture frame on the coffin. The picture is the girl with red hair; her drug abuse leads to her death. This video is for prescription drug abuse awareness. If you have a drug problem please don’t let it take over your life, talk to someone and find help.
