You gotta fight!, For your right!, to be Natural!!

My friends Leroy and Tommy go on Tindr a dating app used to find women of their liking based on a photograph.Leroy swipes right when he sees a women who wears their hair natural because it symbolizes self-acceptance and strength.Tommy tends to swipe left when he sees women wearing their hair natural because Tommy would rather have  a women who has less self acceptance but is beautiful and fits into society. Point being today in the community of African American women there is a divide on whether to choose to wear their hair Natural or Non-Natural. This argument is huge, celebrities like Erykah Badu are involved serving as a leader in the movement. From the start of the movement in the late 1800s, this issue has grown in the African American Community, from the creation of relaxer by Garrett A. Morgan to the industrialization of chemical hair products. A lot of Non- Naturalist have so many reasons to wearing their hair as they do, one of them being so they can fit the European standards and look acceptable to our society. African American males seem to be agreeing equally with how their wives choose to up-do their hairstyles, some like them natural, some like them non-natural, and some just do not care. Times are changing for the movement, now in present days Natural hair has a much more powerful standpoint in the political argument then they did 20 years ago when the Non- Naturalist were on the winning side. As we continue on with my research you will see how time, looks, and thoughts are a huge part of the movement.

Are you Natural? Is that Natural? What is Natural? African american women deem the term natural to be described in many ways so that there cannot be one definitive description of the word. The Natural Hair Movement has been a movement for decades now and up until the 1920s was not recognized as a movement. Being apart of this rejuvenating, powerful spiritual journey gave the black woman strength and power as a human being. It made them realize that it was okay to be black and not fit the non-natural look. African American women all over were picking up on this natural look, not knowing how big of a movement was ahead.

Moving forward into the future, choosing to wear your hair natural became apart of The Black Power Movement, one of the prime targets of this movement was the straightening of colored peoples hair. To be Natural was to be Black, to have pride in your own race, be proud of the skin that you are in, not wanting to be like another race because that is how society wants it. The Afro was a major symbol for the Naturalist and the Black Power Movement, it was considered a posing threat to society. The Afro is not the only “meaning of Natural”, going natural can mean a lot of things like wearing your hair with no extensions or without any chemicals or relaxers to damage the natural follicles of the human head.

On a secondary note isn’t the hair that women use for extensions natural human hair? So, what does natural really mean?  Being natural in the African american community shows that you have a strong meaning in life; you want to represent yourself as a strong black woman. The self confidence you have in yourself is at an all time high. It is more than just a choice it is a way of life. Wearing your hair natural is the way to go now in present times. The women who use relaxer and wear weave are considered un-naturalists. African american women who wear weave or relaxer in my eyes can be categorized as natural too. My reasoning behind this theory is because when using relaxer you are simply straightening the curls of your natural hair so that it looks nice. Women that wear weave are using the natural human hair of other human beings so why can’t they be apart of the natural movement? Many questions, but unknown answers.

In the naturalist point of view it does not count, but to the Non-Naturalist they bought it and it is natural hair from another humans head. It seems natural, but is it? Natural can be described in many ways and seen or looked at in many ways. That is why the term really cannot be defined or explained in my eyes. There are many forms of natural not just dealing with hair, but foods, bodies, plants, animals etc. Natural is a broad term that keeps evolving with time and will never clearly have a simple definition.

Contrary to many beliefs, Madame C.J. Walker was not the inventor of the relaxer and perm. Relaxer, aka creamy crack was stirred up and concocted by an African American man named Garret A. Morgan, a child of former slaves in Paris, Kentucky way back in 1877. This invention of his was made to be used to manage African Americans hair take the regular curls they were use to and relax it (making the hair straight).

Many African american women now felt with the invention of the relaxer that it was improper not to fit the European standard and wearing their hair in its natural state was disrespectful in the society of their day. The invention of relaxer had many African american women walking around feeling all high, and mighty. You could feel as though they felt as though they were Caucasian because they had straight hair and no nappy curls. African American women feel compelled to adapt to a European standard look because they feel as though as many people do, that in order to fit into any society you should have that standard look so that you do not get look at as an outcast. Also many women were and are still wearing their hair with relaxer in it because many men love the hairstyle.

A lot of black men are involved in this empowerment for the their own reasons. African American men seem to vary in what they like their women to wear on their heads. Some are for the natural, some are for the non-natural, a lot truly do not care. The men that do care have many opinions on why they want their wives hair to look a certain way. Men that choose the natural look for his women, loves and respects his wife. He wants his wife to be true to herself, and let her know that he loves her for her not for whatever other reason. The men that choose the non-natural look for their wives usually love their wives but want them to look a certain way in order to be able to be in the presence of the black male. This is sad because this destroys the worth of a lot of black women, it makes them think they have to look a certain way in order to have any man, and that is not the case.

This has caused a division in the community of African American women. Some women still like wearing their hair natural and others like to wear it non-natural. It is crazy how the creation  of a hair product can divide such a great race of human beings apart. This division is a serious debating topic in present times. A movement has derived from this division; The Natural Hair Movement. Many political leaders and musical artists and models such as Coretta Scott King, Condoleezza Rice, Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, and many many more partake in this woman empowering journey.

The Queen of Neo Soul herself is a prime leader in The Natural Hair Movement. Being a music artist from Hollywood, you would think she would go with the celebrity look straightened relaxed hair, or weave, but no she chooses to be a Naturalists. Erykah Badu has embraced her natural look when pop culture has not. She feels as though this look is healthier for her mind, body, and soul. Why should she choose which way to wear her hair one way or the other. Her hair embodies who she is as a human being. Being apart of this division of the African american women has shown her she’d rather be a person with “a natural mind and processed head than a processed mind and natural head.” Erykah states in her interview that “Being natural is really fresh but every once in the while, super natural!”

Reasons such as previously stated is why she is a huge staple in this Natural Hair Movement. Many protests and political arguments have taken place over the years between the Naturalists and Non-Naturalists, and from these arguments over time both sides continue to switch sides for the win. For example, twenty years ago natural was not the style. A women took us on her personal natural hair movement from 1996 to 2015. Her reasoning for bringing us with her is because she wanted to show how Natural hair was judged in the 90s , and how now in the 2000s is embraced highly in the black community. Back in the 90s black women were so harsh upon other black women who chose to wear the natural look, and in a course of 20 years it amazes me how they embrace the natural look. Now in present times natural is the way to go. Although very quiet this movement is huge and ongoing. I see no end to this debate amongst the African american women.

A number of African-American women continue to damage  their hair more and more each year. Author and physician Loren Pickart speaks on the damaging affects and loss of hair in her article “The Truth About Hair Relaxers.” Pickart states relaxing hair seems to be the talk of the party in the African American women’s community; although this product damages their hair with all the chemicals it contains, they continue to use it and sell it in stores. The non- naturalists the weave, braid, chemical relaxing wearers that choose to be everything other than natural. These are the women who want to fit into society not only as themselves, but be able to be themselves but look as if they are apart of another race. So they can mirror “the European standard of beauty.”

Natural hair is looked at as inappropriate and socially unacceptable. Long straight hair is beautiful and elegant, why wear your own hair when you can buy Brazilian, Malaysian, or Chinese hair to sew into your scalp? That is the non-naturalist point of view. Black women want to be apart of society so much that they rather damage their hair and change their looks to fit into the European style than just be themselves. The idea of relaxer seems very counter intuitive, this is a whole race of beautiful different shades of women varying from mahogany to dark chocolate, that has fought almost 300 years for freedom and equality to be who they are, and not to be looked at as different. Now they have invented a product so that they fit the standard look of their past oppressors. It is confusing and ridiculous to me. A lot of black women could have long beautiful hair, curls of gold , but they continue to treat their hair with relaxer which in the end damages the hair follicle completely.

The FDA clearly lists the dangers of hair relaxers and people still use them. Relaxer contains sodium hydroxide the most prominent chemical used in this product. This chemical is found in drain cleaners, so why use this chemical toxin? The strength of the product is clear now yet using drain cleaner chemicals does not deter African-American women from continuing to damage their hair. The pH factor in relaxers is 10-14; the stronger the pH the faster and longer black hair stays straight, resulting in deepening the damage to the scalp. The chemical penetrates the cortex or cortical layer and loosens the natural curl pattern. This inner layer of the hair shaft is not only what gives curly hair its shape but provides strength and elasticity. Once this process is performed it is irreversible. This process which produces the desired effect of “straighter” hair at the same time leaves hair weak and extremely susceptible to breaking and further damage. One must keep in mind that relaxers do not help the hair, but actually strip it.

Seeing the dangers of using relaxer,  African american women ignore the damage just to fit the European standard and they can feel beautiful. Follow these steps for those who continue to treat hair with relaxer, and less damage may be caused  1. A protective base is applied 2. Relaxer is neutralized 3. Conditioning treatments are vital. Many women are against using relaxer products in present times because of the dangerous chemicals they contain and the damage it does to the hair and they are more aware of the dangers, not using relaxer leads to a safer route and stronger, healthier hair.

In closing, the reader has gained knowledge on The Natural Hair Movement. My goal was to give people an understanding on how dangerous relaxer and weaves can be to the hair; sparking the mind with facts about the healthier route to take with your hair. The result is not only have stronger and fuller hair, your mind and body will be in a better state then they would be if you decide to choose the Non-Natural way of life. By explaining what the Movement is and what it’s all about, I have hoped to really expressed the time I took to understand my topic so that the reader can fully get with the movement and by the end choose a side that they agree with natural or non-natural. This little movement is so big that it deals with bigger issues that we have and are facing, like the Black Power Movement, racial tension, and effects little things such as job interviews, presentations for school or work; being natural or non-natural takes a toll on black women in their everyday lives. The fact is most people choose to be Natural now a days and are being more accepted in society because they are glowing with self-acceptance rather than hiding behind a false hair-do to surpass to a European standard.“I love my hair because it’s a reflection of my soul. It’s dense, it’s kinky, it’s soft, it’s textured, it’s difficult, it’s easy and it’s fun. That’s why I love my hair.”

00:00  The ad starts by showing a young man maybe in his late teens wearing what looks to be wearing a baseball hat and holding a baseball bat. There is a man sitting in the bleachers as a spectator. Maybe this man is a relative or coach of the young man.

00:01  An older man maybe in his early 40’s is also holding a baseball bat, wearing a baseball hat and batting gloves. This man may be the boys father or coach.

00:02  Both of them are getting ready to hit baseball and are in mid swing. The older man appears to be showing the boy how to hit a baseball. They might be practicing for a baseball game coming up the boy might play in.

00:04-00:06 The same people are now on a front lawn of a house practicing playing football. The boy is throwing to the older man and is wearing a football jersey. In this frame they appear to be having more fun than before and appear to be less serious. The boy throws the football to the older gentleman who catches it.

00:07-00:09 The same older gentleman is now suited up as a catcher with the catchers glove and pads and is getting ready to catch something. Now the boy is pitching to the older man who is kneeling down. Both of them have very serious expressions on their face. The boy throws a strike down the middle of the plate. Pitcher might be the boys position on the team he might be on.

00:10 Now they are playing hockey in what looks like to be the same house as where they were playing football. The Older man is playing as the goalie and the younger kid is trying to score on him. Once again they seem to be having a great time playing without any care in the world

00:11-00:13 They are now playing soccer on a field where the boy score on the older man. The viewer can almost safely assume this is the boys father by how they interact with each other.

00:14-00:20 The boy is now playing on an outdoor basketball court with his father. They now are playing against two other boys in the park. It can be seen that they are using teamwork to win against the two boys. The boy passes to his father for the game winning point and rejoice with each other when it goes in.

00:20-00:300 The ad ends with the simple words “Teach them early” across the screen. This stays on the screen for 5 seconds and then the words “Violence against women is wrong”. The assumption that this is a domestic violence ad. The ad never shows violence against women but throughout the ad it shows the hitting, kicking, slapping etc. in sports games.

People in the United States often think that the use of capital punishment is actually cheaper than giving life sentences but this is simply not the case. According to a former jurist from California named Donald McCartin, he says, “10 times more expensive to kill than to keep them alive”. When the death penalty is spoken about the argument is not whether killing a man is morally right but cheaper. Advocates that support capital punishment insist that we need punishment this severe to deter people from committing horrible crimes. Opponents for the death penalty have failed to reveal any statistics that show a deterrence in states that use the death penalty. So maybe these advocates will have a change in heart when they read its not cheaper and morally wrong to use the death penalty.

According to a study done by the LA times it costs the tax payers an extra 114 million more a year in California to keep someone on death row compared to life in prison. California has only executed about 11 people over the last 27 years. For something that is morally wrong and very expensive many politicians fight to keep it.

Over 20 years can pass after sentencing to the death penalty that it actually occurs. For a man to be executed,  first years of legal battles and drawn out appeals in court must pass. New Jersey recently banned the death penalty for this issue alone back in 2007. Estimations that the average cost for the death penalty is around 4.2 million for each execution case yet none were actually executed.  States are facing many budget cuts and can not afford to use the death penalty anymore and are as a result are abolishing capital punishment. States have hundreds who have been sentenced to death yet in the United States last year under 50 inmates were executed.

Giving someone life without parole compared to the death penalty creates many opportunities for the inmates to be exonerated of charges. With new technology being used in crime labs it gives the inmate the right sentence. The death penalty has killed many that actually weren’t guilty of the crime but were charged with the crime. After a person is put to death, sometimes the truth is found about who actually committed the crime and nothing can be done. The United States is one of few that still practice the death penalty, other have been able to see what we can not.

Causal Rewrite–ohearnj8

Minorities are disproportionately sentenced to capital punishment causing more Minorities to be put to death than white offenders.

In the United States there are states that still practice capital punishment  index crimes. In many cases that are eligible for the death penalty the courts use a jury system. The people that are usually picked to be on a jury for the death penalty are predominantly white males and females. Some of these people may be racially discriminant against minorities and will often use the color of the inmates skin to decide if he or she is innocent or guilty of a crime. Statistics show that it is more likely for a minority inmate to be given the death penalty when the victim is white. A much lower rate of murderers are put to death when committing black on black crimes. The rate the death penalty is given is also lower when a white man kills a black man.

Many of the cases are left to a prosecutor to decide if the offense warrants the death penalty. In one examination of the race of many prosecutors in the states that use the death penalty it was found that 98% were white and the other 2% were minorities, leading to many cases be decided by a white male. In the states where the death penalty is practiced, black males make up significantly less of the population yet they make up more than half of the prison population. These states are so far behind when it comes to haveing a racially balanced court system and jury.

Many inmates do not have the money for legal expenses needed to have a knowledgeable lawyer, causing many to be found guilty in cases where they were actually innocent. Some inmates that are put to death are later found to be wrongfully convicted and were actually innocent. The death penalty is a biased form of punishment that needs to be done away with in our country.

A15: Research Argument

My Researched Opinion

Your first and only long argument is due FRI DEC 04 before class. The culmination of your research, it will draw conclusions supported by the evidence you provide.

This paper will no doubt contain material from your shorter arguments, though in its presentation it will most likely not make obvious to your readers that it contains a definition essay, a causal essay, and a rebuttal essay. Instead, it will transition from argument to argument seamlessly and perhaps reorganize the material for better continuity.

Your paper will acknowledge that your position is not the only, nor probably the most popular opinion on a topic and that reasonable people hold opinions very different from your own but that nonetheless, yours is the correct position.

ASSIGNMENT SPECIFICS

  • Write your only Research Position Paper.
  • The recommended length is 3000 words, but as always, the word count is a guideline. A strong paper of 1500 words that makes it case well and thoroughly is far superior to a flabby, repetitive 3000-word essay.
  • HOWEVER, a 1500-word essay that does not make a complete argument, or provide sufficient support, or persuade readers of the inevitability of its reasoning is NOT acceptable.
  • WORSE STILL, a 1500-word essay that is wordy, wasteful, and repetitive, and that doesn’t reflect a semester’s worth of research.
  • The paper will make a controversial, counterintuitive argument supported by serious academic research.
  • The essay will include a consideration of common or reasonable counter-arguments and refute them.
  • The citation technique is informal.
  • The paper will include a Works Cited providing bibliographic details for only those works specifically identified in the essay by citation (at least five sources, but however many you actually cite).
  • An Annotated Bibliography is not required for this post.
  • The Annotated Bibliography is a separate assignment you have already posted. It will detail all the sources you have consulted, on the pattern of your Proposal +5, and Proposal +10, but with as many as 15 sources.
  • Call your post Research PositionUsername.
  • But in addition to that placeholder title, also give your essay a proper title. For example, this post is titled “My Researched Position”
  • Publish your definition essay in the A15: Research Position category.

GRADE DETAILS

  • DUE FRI DEC 04 before class.
  • Customary late penalties. (0-24 hours 10%) (24-48 hours 20%) (48+ hours, 0 grade)
  • Portfolio grade category (75%)

Reflective – tpaz1

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

The first week of this class, I was taught that anything I write in Comp II there is always going to be a time to revise and find more and more information on a particular subject. For example, when writing about my research topic on abolishing the Death Penalty, at first I thought I had enough general basic information. After receiving more than helpful feedback from my professor, I learned to continue my research deeper  than I have before on my information on the negative side of the Death Penalty. When doing so, it allowed my work and my revisions become better, but allowed my readers to have a better understanding of the topic.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

While searching for different information on my research topic, I have come across a number of sources that have supported my position on abolishing the Death Penalty. When I first found five different sources in the Proposal +5 assignment, I thought that was enough to get my point across to readers that capital punishment causes more harm than good. As my research continued, I began finding more reliable sources from Huffington Post, Washington Post, etc, to help create and convey a meaning to readers.

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

In Comp II, when writing a piece you need to be mindful of the audience, know and support the process, realize the time, and what is going on. When doing assignments like Proposal +5 and White paper it helped keep myself organized and well planned out for writing later assignments like, Causal and Definition argument. In other words, it served almost as an outline to supporting my thesis.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

At first, when I began doing my research on different information about Death Penalty laws and methods; I was almost stuck because I kept finding different sources that stated the same thing. As other assignments needed to be turned in with more and different information on my topic to support my claim, I dug deeper to explore other views of the death penalty. I eventually found and used direct quotes that supported my thesis. By using different quotes, it helped support my thesis with clear and direct evidence. For example, the casual and rebuttal assignment, I used different quotes from different sources, to claim how people, who work for the state believe the death penalty has too may negative errors. Without researching different aspects of my topic, it wouldn’t have a clear or strong message.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

When writing anything that isn’t your own information, it is very important to give credit to whom it came from, the source. In every assignment in this course, it involved some kind of research. At the end of each assignment, I made sure to include a works cited, which gave credit to where the information came from. Although much of my work in my research position was opinion based, web sources have benefitted and strengthen my claim to abolish death penalty.

Core  Value I.  My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I remember when professor Hodges repeatedly told the class that every writing you do is a draft. And that a writing is never perfect until it goes through many writing rewrites and practices. For example, my visual analysis on buzz driving was much understandable and well developed when I rewrote it through my professor’s feedback. I came to realize that writing requires several drafts and thought to it. For my research paper, I had my argument position fixed and closed for my research topic. But after conducting further research and getting more in depth information in my topic, I changed my argument position. I found the stone money assignment very interesting to learn and explore from. I was to see from different perspective  and understand that money is  not just piece of paper.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

I usually can’t have conversation on something I don’t have background knowledge. I at least try to understand it but not take part in the discussion. I always make sure my response is correct and understandable before I posted it on the blog discussion.

Core Value III.  My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

Before beginning my writing, I always questioned myself what the purpose behind my writing is. I kept in mind who the writing is intended for and what purpose it serves. When I wrote my visual analysis add, I didn’t take my audience in consideration. Professor Hodges’ feedback helped me to write the 30 seconds video  in clear and detailed way so my audience could visualize it. In this course I learned to give more detailed knowledge and understand it while I am writing it. Another assignment required me to write summarized article. I had to analyze an author’s article and then summarize it in my own style. I basically had to follow the theme of the course and present why this article is counterintuitive in my summary.

Core Vale IV. My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Ever since I took this class, I read my writing over again to see if I have made any mistakes. Through professor Hodges’ feedback, I noticed my mistakes with sentence structure and grammar in my writing. I tried to learn and improve my writing to prevent those mistakes from occurring over again. When I was first assigned 3000 words final paper on my topic, I was unsure on keeping the topic. I wasn’t sure If I would be able to find that much information on my topic. But over time, I was able to find  pieces of different information and put it all together into my paper. The short argument assignment kind of helped out as well.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

During this course, I had learn to properly cite my sources and make correct in text citation. I know my responsibility as a writers to avoid plagiarism

Reflective – gemfhi

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I had a less than favorable disposition about writing classes such as these before I started this class. I was always a rule breaker and took artistic liberty when it comes to writing and I was repulsed by how much the artform was colloquially treated as a science. However throughout this class I realized that this class can be viewed as a specific “genre” of writing; a subdivision of the artform that is no less artistic, just specific. This class was the first time I cared about rewrites and structure and trying to fit the mold of this sort of academic approach to the art. I decided to view it as a challenge to myself that if I can master this and dedicate myself to this style, it would only mean I’ve gotten that much better at the artform overall; albeit only in a specific regard.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

Gathering and examining sources preemptively, before writing, was pretty standard among the assignments in this class. Most assignments revolved around taking 2 or more sources, hearing/reading what they had to say, whether they conflicted or agreed, and pulling the information together to begin my own informed assessment and analysis of the topic at hand. This helped to understand how to make the writings appeal to a wider variety of people, rather than simply those who already think the way I do. A very good exercise indeed, that I will carry with me into other forms of writing.

We did a smaller scale exercise which showcases this well: Summaries

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

In order to conduct an efficient rewrite I first had to analyze my own work in the same regard I would analyze another individuals. This cannot be done without taking into account the audience, purpose context and rhetoric. Reviewing the many sources was excellent practice towards reviewing my own work. I feel I have a much better understanding of how to critique my own work as well as other works I am going to be exposed to. Honestly, I have to admit my understanding of getting inside the authors head has improved drastically.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Not only did I have to read sources and respond to them, but when I made an argument of my own, I had to cite my own sources. An example would be the first assignment Stone Money in which we had to choose our own personal sources and information that would be used to fuel any argument we made towards the concept of money. In this I had to locate my sources of choice, evaluate their information and reinterpret it into something I could make a personalized thesis about. This was a great introduction before delving into the more abstract exercises of which came later in the semester. I think it makes a great example of my growth because it is my first attempt to wane according to this structure.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

In my causal argument I try to explain a complex notion which I came up with after being inspired by a specific source. It is a result of an already scientifically debatable article but I looked deeper into it to try to extract convincing samples of truth of which I could apply to the argument I was trying to make. I also cited the source at the bottom for those who are interested to inspect for themselves.

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

Good writing can sometimes be perceived as something that comes naturally and effortlessly to certain people. However, I soon realized that good writing doesn’t appear on the first draft. I finally realize that good writing takes a lot of thinking, reflecting, revision, collaboration, and feedback for the writing to be shaped into the best form it can be. This changed my view on how authors write. No longer did I see that good writing was something that flowed out of talented individuals, but it takes a lot of effort, help, and a great number of drafts. This change of perspective has encouraged me into asking for more feedback, reflecting, and reviewing in my work. There were days where I felt like my writing could not get any better, whether it was because I was stuck or very attached to what I have came up with. But I experienced that each time I re-read my work I saw more spelling mistakes, grammar errors, and confusing sentences. I know now that writing is not easy and I have to always push forward and rewrite my work.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

In my earlier works, I had a simple goal. I just wanted to get across to the readers the point of my writing. However, now I feel like my writings are supposed to be much more than getting a point across. I currently feel like my writing has to be more precised and I have to be more careful with the words that I choose and how I structure my sentences because I want my writing to have a little bit more meaning. After all of the assignments I had to do, I want my writing to have a huge change on how I am expressing my thoughts.

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

I have already been taught to be mindful of the audience when writing essays, which only resulted in me changing my wording to appeal to the audience; however, this class has made me realize that there is much more to just appealing to the audience. In this class, the professor always emphasize the point of view of the audience and their persepctive on the student’s writing, whether it make sense or not. Many ways of writing were introduced to be like definition arguement to strenghten the audience’s understanding of the writing by informing readers more. Also, the professor put much emphasis on the purpose and context of the essay to make sure students are clear in their main point of the writing and that the writing flows together smoothly.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Typically, I would do very little research and write my paper with an attachment of the works cited. However, by having my work on a blog and being able to link the articles to my writing, I feel like it brings to my writing clarity and a little bit of liveliness. It encourages me to add more illustrations like surveys and other ideas into my writing.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

Not only have I felt I am more careful with the sentences that I choose, I also feel careful with my sources. I feel like I am handling with a lot of articles because the topics that we have to write in class required a lot of support. Therefore, with all of these ideas from other people to include in my writing and the different sources I had to handle, I feel like it has made me more careful with how I cite and paraphrase.
