Reflective – gemfhi

Core Value I. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I had a less than favorable disposition about writing classes such as these before I started this class. I was always a rule breaker and took artistic liberty when it comes to writing and I was repulsed by how much the artform was colloquially treated as a science. However throughout this class I realized that this class can be viewed as a specific “genre” of writing; a subdivision of the artform that is no less artistic, just specific. This class was the first time I cared about rewrites and structure and trying to fit the mold of this sort of academic approach to the art. I decided to view it as a challenge to myself that if I can master this and dedicate myself to this style, it would only mean I’ve gotten that much better at the artform overall; albeit only in a specific regard.

Core Value II. My work demonstrates that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

Gathering and examining sources preemptively, before writing, was pretty standard among the assignments in this class. Most assignments revolved around taking 2 or more sources, hearing/reading what they had to say, whether they conflicted or agreed, and pulling the information together to begin my own informed assessment and analysis of the topic at hand. This helped to understand how to make the writings appeal to a wider variety of people, rather than simply those who already think the way I do. A very good exercise indeed, that I will carry with me into other forms of writing.

We did a smaller scale exercise which showcases this well: Summaries

Core Value III. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

In order to conduct an efficient rewrite I first had to analyze my own work in the same regard I would analyze another individuals. This cannot be done without taking into account the audience, purpose context and rhetoric. Reviewing the many sources was excellent practice towards reviewing my own work. I feel I have a much better understanding of how to critique my own work as well as other works I am going to be exposed to. Honestly, I have to admit my understanding of getting inside the authors head has improved drastically.

Core Value IV: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Not only did I have to read sources and respond to them, but when I made an argument of my own, I had to cite my own sources. An example would be the first assignment Stone Money in which we had to choose our own personal sources and information that would be used to fuel any argument we made towards the concept of money. In this I had to locate my sources of choice, evaluate their information and reinterpret it into something I could make a personalized thesis about. This was a great introduction before delving into the more abstract exercises of which came later in the semester. I think it makes a great example of my growth because it is my first attempt to wane according to this structure.

Core Value V. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

In my causal argument I try to explain a complex notion which I came up with after being inspired by a specific source. It is a result of an already scientifically debatable article but I looked deeper into it to try to extract convincing samples of truth of which I could apply to the argument I was trying to make. I also cited the source at the bottom for those who are interested to inspect for themselves.

Your paragraph about Value I is brilliant, gemfhi, and greatly appreciated. I will add your observation to my lecture material. It will help others who, like you, want to treat all writing opportunities as equal.

Your other entries are way above average, but they could use specific examples of actual choices you made. Twice at least you omit apostrophes needed to show possession.

    Nice work.
