Lecture: The Invention of Money

As much as we take it for granted (it’s the water we swim in), the world’s economy is a fiction as unreal and imaginary as anything Joss Whedon or Neil Gaiman every dreamed up, and the language it speaks, its money, its currencies, are gibberish—totally intangible except as coins and bills, but illusory—just social constructs with numbers attached to help us keep track of how much to tip the Uber driver.

-Riddle: how to the geese know which one to follow? They follow the one in the front.
    – Reviewed the deadline menu and our upcoming assignment deadlines.
    – We discussed that certain places can decided whether or not you are a citizen in their country if you are born there. (Ex: In France you can be, in Italy you cannot.)
    – There is now a counterintuitive page on WordPress where we can ask counterintuitive questions that come to our mind.
    – Went over the different citations APA, intext and informal.
    – Reviewed 5 examples about citations, then we had to create and turn in our own in-text citation.

Counterintuitive Questions-This is the opposite of what you would already assume.
These types of questions are the one pulling out more information by going around the obvious things being discussed. We looked into how counterintuitive questions aid in the writing you are creating. “ Why are we citizens of the country we were born in?” We asked this question to further dive into obvious questions being asked and back up the claim you would be making on the topic.
Next we talked about upcoming assignments and when they need to be completed and how we should start the assignment.

  3. -Geese just follow the goose that is all the way in the front.
-We reviewed the conferences and saw that now we have to go back to the chart and provide a brief summary on what occurred during the conference.
    -Withdrawal deadline is April 10th.
-We are citizens of the country we are born in because different countries’ governments get to decide the laws regarding this matter. The United States says that if you are born in the United States, then you are a US citizen.
-With some advancements in technology, specifically something that could take water vapor out of the atmosphere and condenses it to make water, I think it could be possible.
-In text citations are in APA Style.
-When doing citations for websites, we don’t name the title and then plot down the source all the way below the paper. We just name the website straight up, in quotes.
-Italicizing is the method for publications.

Citations: Use “APA Style”. Use INFORMAL in-text citations: “In an article on the NY Times called ‘Blank’, Blank said…”. Alternate in/out of quotation and paraphrase.

COMMAS & PERIODS: ALWAYS inside the “quotations.”

    *parenthesis ARE commas*

It’s counterintuitive that: Money is merely valuable because we are instructed that it is. The same currency we value here could be meaningless to a foreign person who doesn’t recognize it- $1 Coin example.

We start class with a riddle about geese and then we went over the deadlines on the website, including the white paper, purposeful summary, and the stone money essay. We continued class with counterintuitive phrases including defending why citizenship exists. We went over the proper way to have APA citations in the text. You name its source the title and said language. You’re able to directly quote or paraphrase the resource you are using. If what you want to say isn’t directly able to be said you can paraphrase what you want and then add a direct quote to finish your argument. The publisher is italicized not the title. We went over two examples of articles that have proper citations and how to develop an argument. We went over the instructions for our first essay, stone money about Americans’ relationship with money after the 2008 recession. We have to listen to an hour-long podcast for the material of the essay.

In class today, we first looked at a riddle which was very simply and straight forward. We then went over some housekeeping things, like deadlines coming up and conferences.

Then we discussed two counterintuitive questions and talked about how when people are born in a certain country, they need permission to go somewhere else. I never thought it made sense to put borders between countries because its just land. How is that fair to people, they didn’t ask to be born in a place that they’ll be stuck at.

Professor Hodges went over how to do APA citation and some rules, you should name the website first and then call out the title. Then you can abbreviate the website afterwards, throughout the essay. Then you do some paraphrase before you put your evidence in quotations, in. You also have to make sure to italicize when using titles of journals. Also, theres no need to always directly quote again when you could paraphrase. When you get to listing references used in the essay, it should be in alphabetical order.

Counterintuitive questions are the kind of questions that would get one to think hard enough that they would have to provide reasons as to why they think they are right. These questions will have two different sides whom they might think are right. An ideal format to deliver evidence and sources would be to start off by introducing the piece of work and give a small purposeful summary of the article with a hint of citation from the work. Make sure to italicize the proper words, you would italicize the name of publications and quotations for titles. References are to include the author’s name and whom they published it from (Company) and to have the references in alphabetical order.

The riddle of the day is “How do geese know which goose to follow?” The answer was “the one in front.”
The deadline menu has been updated by the due date.
    Counter-intuitive questions:
    1. Why are we citizens of the country we’re born in? If born in the U.S. , France, and some other countries than you are. If you were born in Italy or Ireland you wouldn’t be considered a citizen from that country. Each country makes up their own rules.
    2. Can we democratize water? It’s easy to make electricity through solar panels instead of paying a company to give you electricity. It’s harder to “make” water, you would have to get water vapor out of the air. I guess you could democratize water but it would be a hassle.
A demonstration of APA style, informal in-text citations. In-text means that we name the article we are reading, the author, in the regular grammar of the sentence. We put it in quotations. We address the author or source with their full name the first time and then can abbreviate the second time. A direct quote or a paraphrase can be done.
A direct quote uses quotations around it, paraphrase does not. Sometimes quotations can be used for a special term such as “sugary drinks” in the APA demonstration. The titles of publications are italicized. Alphabetize the references as the correct technique.
In the first example we used (Publisher and Title, plus Quote).
In example 2 we used (Publisher plus Quote).
In example 4 we used (Name of journal, title of Article, plus Paraphrase).
We go over a lecture called “The Invention of Money.” Currency is a social construct, such as the Susan B Anthony dollar coin, it’s not recognized as currency in Egypt.
Stone money has a 1 hour podcast, the Planet Money team at NPR. Requirement 1 is to provide a useful introduction based on the first 10 minutes. The second requirement is “The Island of Stone Money.” We will be reading the first 5 paragraphs. 1,000 words and no more 1,100 words for the Stone Money essay.

      1. The real question for me is not how we become citizens but WHY we become citizens. I’m not a citizen of New Jersey, just a resident. I’m not a citizen of North America, just the United States. I’m not a citizen of the Earth, just the United States. Arguing for World citizenship and nothing else. With me?
      2. It’s easy NOW to make electricity through solar panels . . . . Hasn’t always been. Water is exactly as available as sunlight.

To begin class we go over some housekeeping with our class, that includes going over upcoming deadlines such as the Whiter Paper and Purposeful summary. After housekeeping we discuss the question: “Why are we citizens of the country we’re born in.” This is a very peculiar question because it is hard to understand why you can’t be a citizen in a different country as soon as you’re born. Then we talk about how we can democratize water by finding our way to create our own. After going over these counterintuitive questions we go over an informal in-text citation or the APA style. The professor shows how we use italics for the right publications, for an example The New York Times. Following this our class previews one of our upcoming assignments called Stone Money.

Riddle: keep answers simple the answer to the riddle was obvious and simple to come to that conclusion.

Discussing counterintuitive questions: Why are we citizens of the country we’re born in? It doesn’t really make sense that people can’t just move where they want. The answer isn’t as simple because you need permission to move somewhere if you aren’t a citizen.

Can we democratize water? Technically you could democratize water if you make condensation, you are technically ‘making water’. Professor Hodges says that it may be illegal to collect rainwater however, I think that may be far out.

American Psychological Association (APA) is a citing technique we are using instead of MLA. Name source, title, and author. You also include a quotation, paraphrasing and some said language. This completes the citation, and it should just be in the text. Quotation marks and underline for the title. The title of publications gets italicized. For every citation created, there must be a reference; they must be put in alphabetical order, include the titles of articles or sources, list publishers/authors (if there are any listed on the website), and finally a quote or a paraphrase.

Stone Money assignment: 1000-word short essay older civilizations used money made of stone. Even though now people can make 100 billion of dollars with a push of a button.

Professor said, “The author tells us, ‘You misunderstood what I meant by “That makes no sense.”‘”
      Do you need that explained?

-Class started off by briefly going over assignments and deadlines
-We then went over the informal in-text apa citation which was about an article from the CDC about childhood obesity cause and consequences.
-Then talked a little bit on quoting and having the period inside quotation marks all the time and never outside of them
-then we talked about stone money and just money in general about the value of a u.s dollar vs a Egyptian dollar, everyone would take the u.s dollar.

Deadlines coming up for next week are the White Paper and Purposeful Summaries. We talked about the counterintuitive questions. It is interesting to think about the idea of people fighting over water. And the idea that people may get in trouble with doing things with water. The citation is APA, not MLA. The title of a publication or journal is italicized. Listen to the podcast “The Invention of Money”

    – Riddle: The geese follow the one in front
    – Deadlines for conferences have been added to the deadline tab on the blog
    – A section is being added for counterintuitive questions so that we can share them with the class
    – The counterintuitive questions of why are we citizens of the country we are born in and can we democratize water where posed. I found these very interesting and worth thinking about.
    – Use quotation marks around direct quotes, paraphrasing does not use quotation marks
    – When writing for this class only use APA format for citing!
    – Homework: Listen to one hour podcast called “The Invention of Money”

    -In-text citation is APA style
-Need your reader to understand who they’re reading
-There are multiple ways to write a citation:
    Publisher, title, quote
    Publisher, quote
    Name of journal, paraphrase
Name of journal, title of article, paraphrase
    Author, name of journal, paraphrase
    -Period, close quote
    -Titles go inside quotes
    -Publications go in italics
-References (the word) should be centered
-Money is viewed differently in different countries

Riddle: How do geese know which goose to follow? ANSWER: “They follow the one in front.”

First mandatory conferences have been completed, zoom conferences have been received.

Brief review of hypothesis conference: Go back to the chart and leave a review of your conference.

Thursday April 13th is when Professor Hodges will be evaluating your work ethic/work progress throughout the semester.

The Stone Money assignment is the only writing task where you will get an assigned topic to write about. Other writing tasks will be more creative-based and according to your time table.

Counterintuitive questions: Feel free to post your own counterintuitive questions on the blog. QUESTIONS FROM CLASS: 1. Why are we citizens of the country we’re born in? ANSWER: It depends on the country’s laws on citizenship. However, in America, it is merely because we were born here. 2. Can we democratize water? We can by collecting raw/natural materials to make our own water.

We will be using APA style to cite our work. Practice using APA style by writing a brief paragraph about the New York Times article, incorporating in-text citation using APA. Do it for homework.

PERIODS ALWAYS GO INSIDE THE QUOTES.

WORK TITLES LIKE ARTICLES GO INSIDE QUOTATION MARKS. PUBLICATION TITLES LIKE THE NEW YORK TIMES ARE ITALICIZED.

    Just paraphrase when explaining articles.

After mentioning someone’s name in your work, use their last name anytime you mention them again.

Listen to “The Invention of Money” podcast before Tuesday February 7th.

Conferences have concluded and zoom recordings have been sent.
Deadlines (with updated conference dates) have been updated under the “Deadlines” menu on the blog.

    Counterintuitive Questions:
“Why are we citizens of the country we’re born?”// “Can we democratize water?”
~It can be decided if you are a citizen of a country based on where you are born. If you are born in France, you are a citizen of France. If you move to Italy, you are not “a citizen of Italy”.

    Mechanics:
    Works Cited=MLA
References=APA (we use APA style in this class)
Sources will be named within paragraphs
Citations call out material from another source
Punctuation ALWAYS before you close the quote
Titles go inside quotes. The title of a publication or journal is italicized ( New York Times )

Money is “valuable” because we are taught that it is. A dollar worth in the US would be worth more than a dollar coin. Because it is based on location, someone from the US would take the dollar they know because it is worth more than a dollar coin.

-How do geese know which goose to follow? They follow the one in front
-Conferences are completed, students are to leave feedback in the chart that we used to sign up
-April 13th: students will be evaluated by Professor Hodges on their performance in class
-Stone Money assignment: writing assignment that has a set prompt that students are to respond to.
-Counterintuitive Questions: Why are we citizens of the country we are born in? In the United States, birth in the country grants someone citizenship. This isn’t true of every country though, every country has their own laws and processes to obtain citizenship.; Can we democratize water? You can democratize water by obtaining the resources that occur in nature to create water.
-Citing sources: APA style is what we’ll use in class to cite our sources.

Counterintuitive Questions: Why are we citizens of the country we’re born in?

    – Can we democratize water? We discuss how lately water is becoming more valuable. For example, there are farmers that planted almonds that take over 12 gallons of water, while other people just want to drink water. We as a society, profit from water, and in the future it cause huge problems between countries

Mechanic: Our writing style is APA style. The professor demonstrated Informal in-text citations. You can first start by naming a publication, an article title, a quote, and combining paraphrases. As long as there is enough information that helps the readers find the original. Always have the period inside the quotation and NEVER outside the quotation. If you end your quotation with three dots, you need to end it with 4 dots because you are ending the sentence. The publication goes into italics and chapters inside books use quotation marks. When we mention a person, we have to state their full name and then when we refer to them again we can just use their last name. The word reference is centered in the middle, that’s not bold. Double quotations rule you go from double to single quote.

-IMPORTANT DUE DATES: THESIS EVALUATION: FEB 23
    SEMESTER EVALUATION: APR 13
    FINAL CONFERENCE: MAY 1-3
-Discussed counterintuitive: Can we democratize water? No, water is getting so valuable because some places have little or too much, and it’ll get to a point where we will have to make it or fight for it.
-Informal Citation: APA Format. When a source doesn’t have an author’s name, use the publication/website to replace the author’s name, then write the website’s title. A “said” follow-up should always be followed by a citation and a paraphrase. PERIOD CLOSED QUOTE ALWAYS (.”) If the quote is part of the sentence, close the quote. No punctuation is required. Three dots in citation means there’s more to the sentence, and four dots means there’s more to the sentence, but mine ends there. Italics are used for articles, chapters, etc., in the source you are citing. Once you fully identify the author, the next time, you mention them only by their last name. Reference should be in the center

Riddle – How do geese know which goose to follow? They follow the one that is in front, they take turns.
    Counterintuitive Questions:
Why are we citizens of the country we’re born in? – each country makes up their own rules of citizenship – if we are born in the US, we are a US citizen
Can we democratize water? – Yes, we could if we could make it – water is the most essential thing for all people – we could even eventually start to fight for it
Informal in-text citations (APA style): name a publication, article title, then combine paraphrase with direct quotation, said language, there has to be enough information within the piece to identify the 5 sources to the other readers
**ALWAYS period closed quote, NEVER closed quote period
Titles of books or articles go inside quotation marks
Publications, journals, magazines, newspapers go in italics
We use double quotes around a direct quote
Inside double quotes we can use single quotes
    Stone Money:
Money is viewed differently all around the world and the value changes depending on where you are
For example, people value 1 dollar differently – we would much rather have 1 dollar than 20 Egyptian pounds – 1 dollar is worth way more in Egypt

Today in class we discussed some more counterintuitive topics like why we need to gain citizenship to be legal in another country, and if water can be democratized. We also discussed an APA citation, an informal in text citation which includes paraphrasing and abbreviations and when to use them. Italics for publications and quotations for titles. We went through different examples of citations, including “publisher and title, plus quote”, “publisher plus quote”, “name of journal, paraphrase”, “author, name of journal, plus paraphrase”.
