How Mom’s Death Changed My Thinking About End-of-Life Care

How my moms death changed my thinking on end of life care

This article written by Charles Ornstein talks in detail about Charles’s experience with his mother’s passing. As a medical reporter himself, he found how conflicting it can be when your own family is the patient. Ornstein speaks on his opinion of end-of-life care and how many doctors, appointments, extra-care, and money, above all, get put into it. But, when it came to his mother his feelings shifted. He was perplexed with the idea of not doing everything possible to beat her pessimistic odds which is exactly what he had criticized people before for doing in the past. In the end, his family decided to take their mother off of aggressive care, but he reached out to medical professionals wondering if the family had wasted money and resources trying. The response, surprising to Ornstein, was “no,” and that the US healthcare system has plenty of money to spare, and the important thing is that each and every family does what’s right for them and their patient.

Vancoover combats heroin by giving its addicts the best smack in the world

This article written by,”Bradley Campbell”,  expands on the counterintuitive idea that giving addicts drugs is actually safer. Vancoover is a port city meaning lots of drugs coming from the pacific, this makes it a hub for addicts. The city has tried different ways to make the addict rates go down but nothing is really making the difference. After trying different methods and research experiments experts extended a program to 26 heroin addicts. This program essentially was giving these addicts heroin for free however many times they needed it. This in return would stop them from breaking and entering cars and homes as well as harming themselves and others around them for their next fix. Most rehab facilities disagree with this methodology and claim they can help recover even the worst addicts. They also claim that this program is just a way of killing off the addicts in a nice way.

Do toms really help people?

In this article by,” Kiera Butler ” she acknowledges toms for their buy- one-give-one approach but exposes the faults in the program. A program such as toms was started to help developing countries, only sometimes it’s not really helpful. Resources cited expanded on the idea that we are flooding their areas with things they don’t need and making it harder for local businesses. As well as not providing things useful to the population, they are only target helping and not mass helping. Toms gives shoes to promote education because kids cant go to school barefoot, but they hand out their shoes in school meaning the kids who are receiving these shoes, must already have a pair. This article brings awareness to other buy-one-give-one companies who are doing great jobs at helping and providing resources that are actually necessary without hurting the already live market.

Can Art On The Outside Be More Important Than The Inside?

The art outside galleries tends to be done by unpaid artists. Not only are they unpaid but more often than not they have bigger meaning than the artwork in the gallery. Street artists use unlikely canvases because it’s a way to pay attention to bigger problems or a way to be more expressive than what galleries will allow. Street art is regarded as one of the largest art movements that have achieved huge popularity and is still rapidly growing as an art form. Street artworks mainly appear in urban areas like walls of buildings, highway overpasses, bridges, and in underground areas. Art defines the outlook of many neighborhoods and cities all around the world. Since the beginning of time itself, people have been adding color to natural surfaces, like cave walls during the era of cave art, or man-made surfaces, much like the modern building walls of New York or other big cities.

The earliest form of art making Paleolithic Art or Cave Art can technically be considered the first form of street art. The painting found on the walls didn’t display political messages but it does give us a way to try and figure out how prehistoric people would live their lives back then. The art style of most cave art is being interpreted differently by archaeologists, historians, and scholars alike because of the abstract nature of the paintings. The importance of prehistoric art is just as important as modern art: it tells a story and keeps history alive through the years with how much information is given in simple pictures with no words.

The idea of painting on property not owned by a person is rebellious and illegal. The art form tends to convey social or political messages that provoke people to discuss and react to the pieces. Street art is connected to creating awareness about social and environmental issues.

Before reaching international fame Banksy, an enigmatic English-based street artist uses a stencil to spread his messages of dissatisfaction with certain aspects of society, certain political situations, or even certain decisions taken by world leaders. Banksy was expelled from school at the age of 14 and served time in prison for petty crimes. When he was 18 Banksy was painting on a train car with his fellow gang members and a police car showed up. His friends disappeared so he hid from police under a dumber truck with oil leaking from him. Some of his earliest art produced more conversations than the likes of Pablo Picasso. Banksy’s Girl with Balloon had the inscription “There is always hope” next to it. Girl with Balloon depicts a young girl in a black dress releasing a red heart-shaped balloon. The painting was originally done in 2002 on a wall in London. In 2018 the painting was redone on canvas and sold in an auction. After the hammer was dropped the canvas started to be shredded by a hidden shredder in the frame. The way of destroying his own work was a way to represent the greed in the art world and anti-capitalism.

Keith Haring’s artwork is now a fairly common sight being iconic for its bold line and its bright colors. His original canvas was not that of walls or canvas but chalkboards in subway trains and stations. Haring had been arrested multiple times on charges of vandalism. In 1980s New York, Haring’s art was a code to common social issues in the world then. He uses dogs to represent and stand in for big powers and the oppressive nature of the world. What was originally a spacing accident became a symbol of greed with his three-eyed smiley face. Haring uses pyramids to represent the past and otherworldly elements, like UFOs, to give distance to the pieces. His most famous symbols are anamorphic, non-gendered human figures colored with bright colors. The figures normally are embracing or interact with each other. The human-like forms represent human love and embrace the importance of advocating for safe sex and AIDS awareness. Haring was openly gay and represented the hardships of the LGBTQ community in his artworks. He used slogans that were quick and easy to understand to spread messages about the dangers and negative effects of drugs.

William Najger aka Will Love Strong is a current-day street artist and is not known to many people. He is the founder of the Love Strong USA Campaign. He is on a journey to spread the message of Love, Unity, and Peace throughout the United States. He does this by making signs in bright colors that have positive messages using old wooden boards. He posts signs on telephone poles, front yards, community spaces, store windows, and fences. A difference between Najger and common street artists is that he gains permission on being able to post his signs. Even if they are only temporary and able to be removed, his signs still spread the positive and powerful messages that other artists are trying to spread. His idea is that love is more important than ever before with everything going on in the world. He documents his journey on his YouTube channel Will Love Strong.

The most important message behind the art is being able to bring change. With more critics looking for art to just be pretty, mainstream art is losing what really matters: it is locked behind tickets and price walls, much like the advanced weapons that are in video games. Most of the artists in the streets are not being paid and are doing art to get their message across to their message out into the world in a way that everyone can see. The lack of a paywall frees the artist and the piece can be seen and gain attention. There is no lack of the ability to share pictures online which helps the message spread as far as online media can take it. Everyone knows that today’s media is limitless in its reach which spreads messages of art.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Helped Maintain Social Interaction Online

If I were to tell you I’ve had a pleasant conversation with an anthropomorphic cat about the weather and how my outfit choice is completely vile…you’d think I am insane. Maybe so, but we all felt some sense of…insanity almost when we’re trapped in doors due to the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. While texting your best friend about the shows you’ve watched is interesting and all…it just isn’t the same. I, personally would much rather go out with friends getting food and exploring the town. Not being trapped indoors for a long period of time and having only technology be the way to communicate. It isn’t even fun either. Texting and FaceTiming is convenient for the lockdown…but it wasn’t entirely fun. Communicating with people through FaceTime or Zoom is getting boring.

A lot of us, myself included, felt the need to communicate with new people. To be extreme with the case…our old friends became “boring.”

Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn’t just known for its “online play platform”. It can certainly provide much needed social interaction, but there are so many other mechanics that have this benefit!

When not communicating with other players, the game has hundreds of villagers that can live on your island. Each of these villagers come in different species and are divided among eight personality types. One day, you might have a conversation with a bodybuilder cat about working out. The other could be an anteater discussing her latest read.

As the Animal Crossing series grew, players began to notice the dialogue of these villagers became…friendly. Animal Crossing players prefer the almost realness of the villagers from the earlier games (Animal Crossing: Population Growing, Animal Crossing: Wild World). From several of the older games, villagers will judge the player cold hearted-ly for anything they did unusual if they were not friends yet. Villagers would become so harsh…it added a sense of realness to the game as there are people in real life who also behave similarly. In these older Animal Crossing games, you had to gain friendship points with the villagers and their dialogue will become nicer. The number of points is not shown in games, it’s truly based on who the villager is and how you interact with them. Much like real life.

Lin Zhu, author of the case study, “The psychology behind video games during COVID-19 pandemic: A case study of Animal Crossing: New Horizons,” explains the relationship more in-depth between the social interactions that can happen within the game. For starters, even though you are starting off the game “alone,” there are villagers there waiting to become your friend in-game.

Now, talking to a non-playable video game character is nice…it isn’t the same as talking to an actual person. Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows players to play online with each other to experience the game more. There are many benefits to the players playing the game by playing online. This includes collecting items for your island and having villagers move to your islands. But when it comes to Animal Crossing players, they are finding more ways to utilize playing online.

The creators of the game allowed the online feature to be used to visit friends’ islands and trade items. With the players trying to crawl out of the boredom they are facing, they took the ability to interact with users online to a whole new level.

New Horizons offers are large variety of items that players can use to decorate their islands however they’d like. Obtaining these items, however may be harder than others due to the rotation the game automatically sets for when items will be available for purchase in the in-game store. Nookazon is an online platform where Animal Crossing players can purchase any in-game item using the in-game currencies (Bells or Nook Miles Tickets) to purchase these items. Communication among other players is crucial for these transactions to be successful and this allows other players to have the opportunity to visit other player’s islands and possibly become online friends.

Zhu discusses in detail the benefits of playing online. In Animal Crossing: New Horizon, players have the option to create events that bring people together through their creativity. “The gamers not only can invite others to their islands to trade items but also talk and hang out virtually. There are even real stories of people having weddings on the game after their ceremonies had been canceled in real life. It is a thoughtful way to make memories and have some laughs during the time they cannot in person.” For many people, Zhu stated, many meaningful events were canceled. High school proms and graduations were also held in this game. It was through these events that many people came together to plan the events, to decorate a part of the island, and to get together — just as if it were a real-life social gathering.

During this time I wanted nothing more than to see my friends and spend time with them. I’m sure a lot of other people thought the same during the beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic. Animal Crossing: New Horizons created a “safe space” for a lot of players. Myself personally, I put so many hours in the game because there was simply nothing I wanted to do more than play a game where I didn’t have to worry about what was going on in 2020. Animal Crossing: New Horizons provides players with a “safe space” from the troubles going on in the world. Sometimes, all we need is to be with people to get our minds off of certain topics and the online mode mechanic in New Horizons does just that. Clinician Andrew Fishman, writer of Video Games are Social Spaces: How Video Games Help People Connect, explains, “There is also evidence to suggest that video games can be a safe place to experiment with social interactions for vulnerable people.”

The beginning of the pandemic, I personally felt more “vulnerable” than I ever felt before. I wasn’t ready to accept this fast and quite so sudden change we as a world faced. With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I felt so excited to feel “relaxed” as the rest of the world felt when they played the game. I did everything the game had to offer and more. Socially interacting with other players around the world was strangely rejuvenating. Trading items was simple, efficient, and fun. Playing made up games on different people’s islands were relaxing to me. I felt there was some sense of normalcy again after a long time without it.

Writers Jonathon N. Cummings, Brian Butler, and Robert Kraut of the article, The Quality of Online Social Relationships explain that after many surveys among people, “Even in the age of the Web and e-commerce, online social interaction is still the most important use of the Internet.”

Before the epidemic we faced enabled us to actively use the Internet for social interaction. A fairly large sum of individuals before the pandemic utilized any form of the internet—including online games—to interact with people online. During the pandemic, these survey results changed with more people becoming more dependent on online social interaction.

Causal Argument Rewrite – Sunflower

Technology Does Not Equal Obesity

Throughout the years technology has become more and more prominent in people’s everyday lives. People are extremely reliant on technology and love the benefits so much that we install it in every aspect of our lives including our homes and our cars. However, we often turn on technology when something goes wrong with our children and blame it for everything. Just think when kids don’t sleep, have no social skills and exhibit signs of depression we instantly blame technology. This same logic is used when it comes to our children being obese. While the idea of technology being the cause of sedentary lifestyles in children sounds plausible technology is actually not to blame when it comes to childhood obesity. In fact, technology can actually be one of the reasons we are able to combat the growing rate of obesity in our children. A new form of gaming called exergaming has actually been able to help children get more physically active by combatting some of the main causes of their lack of physical activity.

One big reason kids do not get enough physical activity is because they have low confidence due to having a lack of athleticism. There are many children out there who are naturally athletic or have been substantially trained in a sport whereas there are many other children who do not fall into this category. Clumsiness is a natural deterrent from physical activity because it’s impossible for clumsy kids to gain the confidence they need to be able to perform well in physical activities. Since these kids are less likely to actively participate in their physical education classes then these children are missing out on what could be their only form of structured physical activity they get. However, one thing that can easily fix this problem is implementing exergaming into physical education. Exergaming is something that every kid can participate in confidently because you do not have to be particularly athletic to do well in these games. It is said in an article by Catherine D. Ennis that, “Exergames typically are situationally interesting and motivational both to skilled and unskilled students.” Exergames incorporate simple movements such as moving your arms and legs and jumping up and down. These simple movements allow students who are clumsier to feel more comfortable and be at an equal playing field with their more athletic counterparts.

Another reason why many kids are lacking physical activity is very surprising and rarely thought about. Kids from underserved communities typically have less opportunities to participate in physical activities than those kids who grew up in more affluent communities. Affluent communities have plenty of after school organized activities such as little leagues, dance classes and more that are meant to get kids active and train them in that particular activity. However underserved communities do not have the money to support programs like this and it naturally puts the children in these communities at a disadvantage. This also causes a problem when it comes to physical education classes because those children who did not have access to sports programs will be less likely to succeed when playing these games with kids who have participated in afterschool sports programs. A study found in the Journal of Sport and Health Science found that, “Schools reach nearly 95% of children in the USA and are important venues to promote weekday PA participation.” Since physical education is so important for our children it is important to play games that every child will be able to be confident playing and successful at. Integrating exergaming into schools will help allow kids of all skill level regardless of whether or not they had the money to participate in sports programs to be put on an even playing field and find their physical education classes to be more enjoyable.

In addition to lack of opportunities many kids also lack physical activity simply because of where their home is located. Not every child is able to live in a home with a big backyard that they can run around and play in after school. For some the only safe place that they can play with children their own age is at the school playground. While being able to play outside for recess every day substantially increases their physical activity, they unfortunately cannot always have outdoor recess due to weather. In order to remedy this, exergaming can be used when recess is forced to move indoors since it does not take up much space yet still allows the kids to get their energy out and participate in physical activity.

So while it is easy to blame technology for why our children are becoming increasingly more obese the facts point to technology being one of the things we can use to combat obesity. One of the most important parts of exergaming is that it has some of the same benefits as the more conventional forms of physical activity including however it has more cognitive benefits as well. Exergaming requires kids to solve problems while being physically active to complete the game. In addition, an article called “Exergaming and physical education: A qualitative examination from the teachers’ perspectives” interviewed P.E. teachers who utilized exergaming in their classrooms. These teachers said, “It was really highly motivating for them; they were really into exergaming…the engagement for all of them was almost equal, it didn’t matter what station they were at, they were all excited.” They found that the exergames were clearly more motivating and enjoyable to the students than the typical games they played in physical education. When you really think about how beneficial it can be, incorporating an exergaming program into a physical education class is the best decision.

Exergaming can solve all the reasons why kids are not able to be as physically active as they should be. It helps kids become more confident when doing physical activities since exergaming requires kids to do basic movements that everyone can do without having to be athletic. It can easily be set up and used at a school in order to give kids somewhere safe to go and be active in inclement weather. In addition, schools can take it a step further and start after school exergaming programs which further gives kids the opportunity to be physically active. Clearly technology cannot be the first thing we blame when our kids are found to be obese. Instead, you have to carefully consider the other less thought about factors. In addition, we need to realize that when it comes to childhood obesity technology is not our enemy, instead it can be our children’s savior.

Clinician Andrew Fishman, writer of Video Games are Social Spaces: How Video Games Help People Connect, explains, “There is also evidence to suggest that video games can be a safe place to experiment with social interactions for vulnerable people.”

At the beginning of the pandemic, I personally felt more vulnerable than I had ever felt before. I wasn’t ready to accept this fast and unexpected change we as a world faced. With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, I felt so excited to feel “relaxed” as the rest of the world did when they played the game. I did everything the game had to offer and more. As a result of social interaction with other players all over the world, I felt rejuvenated. Trading items was simple, efficient, and fun. Playing made-up games on different people’s islands relaxed me. I felt normalcy again after a long time without it.

Writers Jonathon N. Cummings, Brian Butler, and Robert Kraut of the article, “The Quality of Online Social Relationships” explain that after many surveys among people, “…the general public continually reveal that most people using the Internet value email and other forms of online social interaction. Even in the age of the Web and e-commerce, online social interaction is still the most important use of the Internet.” Before the epidemic we had, we were able to actively use the Internet for social interaction. It is estimated that a large number of people before the pandemic used the internet—including online games—to interact with people via the internet. There is a good chance that these survey results will have changed during the pandemic as more and more people become more dependent on online social interaction in order to cope.

Technology Does Not Equal Obesity

Throughout the years technology has become more and more prominent in people’s everyday lives. Not only do we have it surrounding us in our homes and in our schools, but we also carry it around on us everywhere we go in the form of a smartphone. Most of us literally cannot live without our pieces of technology and praise them for being able to have everything we ever wanted at our fingertips. However, all of that love we have for technology goes right out the window as soon as our children become obese. Technology is instantly what is blamed for the sedentary lifestyle many children in the United States currently have. While this idea sounds like it could be plausible, technology is actually not necessarily the cause for the obesity we see in American children due to lack of physical activity. In fact, technology can actually be one of the reasons we are able to combat the growing rate of obesity in our children. A new form of gaming called exergaming has actually been able to help children get more physically active by combatting some of the main causes of their lack of physical activity.

One big reason kids do not get enough physical activity is because they have low confidence and self-esteem. There are many children out there who are naturally athletic whereas other children are not. In addition, many kids are also trained in a particular sport from a young age and are naturally better at it. Being forced to play these games in physical education classes can make nonathletic kids feel anxious and inadequate and they will participate less than their more athletic counterparts. This naturally puts these children at a disadvantage as they are not actively participating in perhaps what could be their only form of structured physical activity they get. However, utilizing exergaming in a physical education class is something new that almost every kid will be able to participate in at an equal skill level. In an article that described the many benefits of exergaming they found that, “… students became comfortable in the exergaming environment and came to play the exergames more effectively.” Students were able to feel more comfortable by playing exergames compared to the typical games played in a physical education class.

Another reason why some kids lack physical activity is very surprising and rarely thought about however kids from underserved communities typically have less opportunities for physical activity. These underserved communities do not have access to the after-school sports programs for children than more affluent communities have access to. More affluent areas have baseball little leagues and ballet classes for kids of that community which helps those kids understand the value of physical activity and also gives them the opportunities to perform it. Not having access to programs like these automatically puts those kids at a disadvantage and therefore they have less structured physical activity time. Structured physical activity helps teach kids how to properly be active and even instills in them why it is important to be active. A study found that, “Schools reach nearly 95% of children in the USA and are important venues to promote weekday PA participation.” For some kid’s physical education is the only place they can receive structured time dedicated to being physically active. Integrating exergaming into these underserved schools and communities can help allow kids to increase their physical activity and also can hold their interest. Exergaming can be especially entertaining to those who cannot afford to have gaming consoles within their homes.

In addition to lack of opportunities many kids also lack physical activity simply because of where their home is located. Not every child is able to live in a home with a big backyard that they can run around and play in after school. Some have to physically go to a park or other open space just so they can run around safely. Depending on the age of the child they may not have access to this spot whenever they would like. In addition, not all neighborhoods are safe for kids to wander around and play with other neighborhood kids. While some kids are able to leave their homes and play outside all day which allows them to be physically active some kids do not have that option. This severely limits the amount of physical activity that these children can get, putting them at risk for obesity.

So, while technology is typically the go to when finding something to blame pertaining to why our children are becoming obese it is clear that there are actually many other factors that can be blamed. In fact, technology can actually help us turn this problem around and be used to our advantage. Exergaming has some of the exact same benefits as normal physical activity does. In fact, a study found that students who participated in exergaming showed “… improvements in physiological and cognitive outcomes, such as body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, bone health, cognition, and academic achievement” In addition it was also found that exergaming is more motivating to children and also more enjoyable than the typically games played in physical education. When you really think about how beneficial it can be, incorporating an exergaming program into a physical education class is the best decision.

Exergaming can solve all the reasons why kids are not able to be as physically active as they should be. It helps kids become more confident when doing physical activity and puts kids closer in skill level. Also, since it is used at a school it gives the kids a safe place to come and be physically active. In addition, schools can take it a step further and start after school exergaming programs which further gives kids the opportunity to be physically active. Clearly technology cannot be the first thing we blame when our kids are found to be obese. Instead, you have to carefully consider the other less thought about factors. In addition, we need to realize that when it comes to childhood obesity technology is not our enemy instead it can be our children’s savior.

Athletes have mental health too

Athletes, whether professional or student, are often viewed as epitomes of strength, resilience and perseverance. However, this perception can be misleading as mental health issues can significantly affect their performance both on and off the field. The pressure to succeed, constant scrutiny and physical demands of the sport can take a toll on athletes’ well-being. Mental health is just as important as physical health and neglecting it can have severe consequences. As we celebrate athletes’ achievements on the field or the court, it’s crucial to recognize that behind the glitz and glamour lies a hidden reality of mental health struggles.

When it comes to mental health struggles in professional athletes, the most common types of illness are stress, anxiety and depression, and these three things can all cause one another. But one of the main causes for these illness’s in athletes is injuries, but not an injury that leaves you out a couple of days or a week, injuries that take away athletes abilities to play for an extended period of time or even end their careers. In the article “The Mental Health of Elite Athletes: A Narrative Systematic Review” by authors Simon Rice, Rosemary Purcell and Stefanie De Silva, the text states “Elite athletes face a unique array of ‘workplace’ stressors… the potential for injuries to end careers prematurely.” The fear of getting injured can take a significant toll on a players mental health, and combine that with the pressure at playing at a high level, can cause an extremely stressful environment that can lead to mental health issues. Moreover, if an athlete suffers a career ending injury it can create many psychological issues. They’re losing their livelihood, they’re losing their ability to do what they are passionate about, and if you want to look at it at the basic level, they’re losing their job for which they have worked so hard to get to.

Although injuries are a common cause for mental health issues among athletes, there is another route that flies under the radar, retirement. The same article states, “There may be subgroups of athletes at elevated risk of mental ill-health, including those in the retirement phase of their careers.” Retiring from professional sports can be a challenging transition for athletes, as they often lose the structure, routine and identity that their sport provided. These losses can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety and a lack of purpose, which may contribute to the development of mental health issues. Also, retired athletes can face financial difficulties which can also lead to stress and anxiety.

Mental health and substances can go hand and hand. The easiest substance to obtain for both professional and student athletes is alcohol. Both types of athletes can turn to alcohol for the same reasons, like to deal with pressure. Professional athletes have the pressure to play at the highest level while student athletes have the pressure to play good enough to make it to the next level. If an athlete develops alcoholism it can result in many consequences like performance issues which can result in job loss. The article “Athletes and Alcoholism”, by author Kelly Brown, lists some physical issues, “Decreased strength output, muscle cramps and decreased muscle protein synthesis.” Decreased strength limits the athletes ability to perform at their required level, muscle cramps causes pain and discomfort which limits the athletes ability to move freely and decreased muscle protein causes an athlete to lose their physical abilities.

Along with professional athletes, students athletes can also deal with alcoholism and mental health issues. Both types of athletes can face the same type of pressure but it can come from different directions. For example the pros can face pressure from their coaches, while students can face pressure from the parents, along with their coaches. The same article states, “Student athletes also face a lot of pressure regarding their athletic and academic performance. Some turn to alcohol to deal with stress.” Student athletes often face significant pressure to perform at a high level in both their sport and academics. The pressure to succeed in both fields and cause stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, some student athletes turn to alcohol as a way to cope with these stresses. Drinking alcohol can provide temporary relief from stress and anxiety, but it can also lead to impaired academic and athletic performance, not to mention legal issues if they are under age too. Also, the pressure to live a “college life” can also lead to peer pressure for college athletes. A main theme for being in college is going out to parties and drinking. This can lead to peer pressure for athletes to fit in with their peers. The desire to fit in causes stress and it can lead to athletes to engage in risky behavior like binge drinking and drug use.

To make matters even worse, athletes are hesitant to speak up about their mental health. There are many stigmas surrounding athletes and their mental health, these stigmas range from the difficulty of spotting these issues to the fear of failure and disappointing others. The article “Mental Health in Athletes: Moving beyond the Stigma” by author Allaya Cooks-Campbell, states “Athletes could feel guilty for having poor mental health. They could blame themselves and fear disappointing others by dealing with mental health issues.” Many athletes are conditioned to prioritize their physical toughness and may view seeking help for mental issues as a sign of weakness. Also, since athletes are expected to play at such a high level, it can lead to guilt and shame if they are struggling because they are held to such high standards. Athletes may also carry the fear of disappointing others by admitting that they are struggling, which can create a significant barrier to seeking help. These feelings of guilt, fear and shame can also be very difficult to navigate, which can also deter athletes from seeking support.

In conclusion, it’s essential to acknowledge that the pressure to succeed in sports can cause a significant impact on the mental health of both professional and student athletes. While these athletes are often celebrated for their physical powers and ability to perform under pressure, the reality is that their mental health struggles are often overlooked. The pressure to succeed, coupled with the stigma surrounding mental health in sports, can create significant barriers to seeking help and support. From anxiety to depression, these issues can have long-lasting effects on an athletes well-being, both on and off the field.

Exercise: Why Do You Hate it?

Exercise adherence is the capacity to consistently partake in physical exercise over time. It requires dedication to consistent workout schedules and while also managing a busy lifestyle. Self motivation is a key element to your mindset when pursuing physical activity and will allow you to stay committed to your own personal goals. A social support system is a great way to have a trusted outside source make sure you stay true to your goals. This outside support could come from a friend or family member who cares about your health and wants to see you achieve your greatest desires. Group exercise is also a great approach to a social support system because yourself and the other individuals you are working out with may share the same end goals which will drive everyone to wanting to be successful. Implementing basic fitness in daily routines will set little challenges for you that will in the long run benefit you as an individual. An example of basic fitness that you can add to your daily routines could be going for a walk or finding time throughout the day to do a mini workout circuit. An individual’s personal health will be the deciding factor for their consistency with fitness. A person’s weight, age and overall bodily health will affect consistency and it is a great idea to consult with a healthcare professional to figure out what plan of action is the best for you. As a result, maintaining a physical activity regimen is crucial for achieving long-term health benefits.

Motivating yourself to exercise can be a challenge that some people may be experiencing. When confronted with busy schedules, physical discomfort, or other obstacles to exercise, it can be challenging to maintain motivation. In a study conducted by researchers, Kylie Wilson and Darren Brookefield they took a group of individuals with a basic fitness background and tested to see if motivation really affects your workout. Wilson and Darren’s reports explains, “Participants in the process goal group scored significantly higher interest/enjoyment and perceived choice, significantly lower pressure/tension, and had significantly greater adherence compared to the outcome goal and control groups.” Setting specific, measurable objectives is a proven method for keeping motivation high. Realistic, achievable, and customized to each person’s preferences and capabilities are the three aspects of an effective goal. For instance, a regular exerciser might aim to walk for thirty minutes three times per week, whereas a more accomplished athlete might make the goal of finishing a half marathon. Persons can monitor their development and maintain exercise motivation by setting specific goals relevant to their own personal health.

Social support is another critical element to exercise adherence. The encouragement, accountability, and motivation that social support can offer to keep up with your exercise routine can come from peers, family, or your exercise partners. According to studies, individuals who work out in groups have a higher likelihood of sticking to their exercise plans than those who work out alone. In a study conducted by Sage Journals, researchers found evidence that shows group activity not only will make individuals adhere to their workout, but also improve balance and functional status. Subjects in the study all contained multiple sclerosis and after the study was conducted the subjects reported that symptoms did not worsen which may lead to those individuals wanting to continue physical activity. It’s critical to find physical activities that you enjoy and can maintain, in addition to establishing goals and looking for social support. Exercise should feel rewarding and enjoyable rather than like a job or a punishment. People are more likely to stick with their exercise routines over time if they can discover activities they enjoy doing and set achievable goals that will benefit their health.

Lastly, it’s crucial to include exercise in everyday routines. This could entail coming up with creative approaches to stay active throughout the day, like using the stairs rather than the elevator or going for a walk during lunch. An active lifestyle can be maintained and healthy habits can be formed by incorporating exercise into daily activities.

Even though consistent exercise is crucial for long-term health benefits, it’s essential to remember that consistency can vary depending on various factors. Age, gender, bodily health, and personal preferences, for instance, can all affect exercise adherence. It can be challenging to keep regular exercise routines due to obstacles like time restraints, access to exercise facilities, and physical limitations. Working with a healthcare professional or exercise specialist who can offer personalized guidance and support is essential to overcoming these obstacles. Health care professionals can offer advice on how to remove obstacles to exercise, create safe and effective exercise routines with them, and track their development over time. There are a number of other methods that people can use to get past obstacles to exercising consistently, in addition to getting professional advice. For instance, adding mindfulness and relaxation exercises to your exercise regimens can help you feel better and work out more effectively. In conclusion, concentrating on the advantages of exercise, such as enhanced health and wellbeing, can support people in maintaining their motivation and dedication to their exercise regimens.

To conclude, here are a number of other strategies that can assist people in overcoming obstacles to exercise adherence in addition to obtaining professional advice. For instance, creating a source of self motivation will allow you to get to the goals you want to achieve. A social support system is an outside person who will help you get your goals and this can come from friends, family members, or the people you workout with. Implementing fitness in your daily routines will allow you to set larger goals throughout the day by achieving the small ones first. Finally, considering your own personal bodily factors and talking with a healthcare professional will allow you to create your health based fitness goals. Furthermore, concentrating on the advantages of exercise, such as enhanced health and wellbeing, can support people in maintaining their motivation and dedication to their exercise regimens.
