Battle Buddy | Veteran Crisis Prevention : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9C3Vh-BSHs

0:01. The video opens on what may be a farm. The landscape is light brown dotted with greenery, seemingly indicating a hot climate dotted with scraggy plant life. Two older-looking men stand beside what appears to be a fence. One man is white while the other is black. The white man wears a cowboy hat, the black man wears what appears to be a baseball hat. The fence has a section missing, as well as boards leaned against it. A wheelbarrow and a box is in frame near the missing section of fence. The paint on the fence boards is uneven. Some of it appears fresh. Visually, it seems the fence is broken.

0:02. The camera zooms in the old white man. The man’s folds in his chin show he is somewhat overweight. The lines in his forehead and around his mouth visually indicate his age. The other man is there, but he is currently working on the fence alone. He is dragging a wire mesh over the gap between two fence posts. The black man, first on the right of the white man is now on his left. His baseball hat is now clearly visible. It is decorated with gold text. The text cannot be read.

0:04. The camera reverses back to the elderly man in the cowboy hat. His hat is a dark blue or black, and his shirt is blue with a plaid pattern. The first two buttons of his shirt are undone, possibly to make working easier. At the bottom of the frame, his hands are working with the wire and the fence. From the previous shot, we know he is dragging the wire fence from left to right, covering an area in the fence with no wire. It would seem he is repairing a hole.

0:05. The camera now clearly centers on the elderly black man. His black baseball hat clearly reads: “Vietnam Veteran”. From this shot, without ever explicitly saying it, the director shows that the two older men are both Vietnam veterans. We can see clearly his grey beard that indicates his advanced age. His face creases above his eyes and his hand, visible on the fence, has visible lines from aging. The shrubbery in the background is blurred to focus the viewer on the man with the baseball hat.

0:06. The shot returns to the elderly white man. He leans on the fence and grabs it with his hand, seemingly using it to support himself while holding wire section in place. Once again, the background is blurred to focus the viewer on the elderly man in the foreground. He is pointing to the left, presumably at the elderly black man, the only other person who was visible in the first landscape shot.

0:08. The elderly man in the baseball hat looks to the right. His eyes widen and he tilts his head about 15 degrees to the left. Visually, this expressions seem to indicate some degree of concern.

0:11. Now, the shot pans out to center the fence. The elderly black veteran is passing a wooden board, painted white, to the elderly white man. The man in the cowboy hat is carefully lowering the board on the end of the empty section of fence. Some of the trees in the background have come back into focus, pulling the attention away from just one of the men to both of them.

0:13. The camera zooms in once again on the man in the cowboy hat. The man’s face widens and his mouth opens again, showing he is talking to the other man. His head is tilting to the right, communicating that he is listening to the man out of frame. The background blurs once again to focus the viewer on the foreground.

0:17. The man on the left with the baseball hat is once again the only person on screen. the background is still blurred. This jump cut of the camera from one face to the other is a technique often used to demonstrate dialogue between two people. The man’s face contorts slightly and his eyes narrowed. This communicates that he is concerned or pondering something the other man said.

0:19. The shot reverses again to the elderly white man. A dialogue is essentially certain between the two men. Based on their age, it is likely they are both veterans of the Vietnam war. His head is tilted even further to the left. His expression is somewhat exasperated, but he has a much smaller frown in comparison to earlier. The background is still blurred.

0:21. The camera reverses once again to the elderly black man. He is now cracking a small smile, showing teeth. Was it something the other man said? Very likely, considering the only other thing happening is the moving of the fence post. the background is once again blurred, but the camera is not nearly as zoomed in, showing more of the fence and the board the two are holding.

0:22. The shot reverses again to the elderly white man. He is standing up straight, and his face has curved into a wry smile. Evidently, he seems pleased with the other man’s reaction to whatever he said. The man is the only thing in the foreground, and the background is once again blurred to prevent the viewer’s eyes from wandering away from their intended subject.

0:23. The camera pans out to show the two elderly men aligning the unsecured wooden board with the rest of the boards in the fence. The elderly white man, who was initially working alone, is now working in tandem with the other man. In 23 seconds, the film maker has constructed a visual narrative where a man begins work on his fence alone and works with someone, presumably his friend, by the end.

0:24. The camera moves out and down. The two men, now facing each other, move into the background. The elderly white man, positioned on the left, leans on the fence and is standing closer to the other man. He is making a gesture with his hands — possibly a gesture to accompany his talking. The camera focuses on a hammer on a stump in the bottom right of the frame. Reasonably, the hammer is likely nearby for repairing the fence. In large white text, the sentences” Don’t Wait. “and “Reach Out.” is displayed.

0:27. The final scene is an all black background with white text. It reads: “Find resources at VA.GOV/REACH”. This indicates it is an advertisement placed by the department of veterans affair to raise public awareness of some resources available to veterans.

Stone Money – cherries

Money. The world uses it, trust in it, and most would say, it runs the world. However, after much research and study on the topic of money, I run into the issue that “money” is dead. It’s not real. Our ideals, and past history relating to money all point to the fact that “money” is really just a concept created in society, but does it really hold? What value does our money have in our current society? How has money changed over the years? All of these questions that I had been wondering about myself were answered through these articles and broadest, I will present to you in order to prove that money is just a mere item, that is fading more and more everyday, as our financial economy is beginning to repeat history.

In “The Island of Stone Money ” written by Milton Friedman, we go all the way back to 1899 and get an anthropological view from William Henry Furness III, about the Island of Yap, a small island in Caroline Islands, that, get this, used stones as their currency. Stones. The island had no metal, so the people of the land used stones as their monetary system, and better yet Friedman says one important characteristic of this stone currency is that the owner does not need to physically hold it in order to claim ownership. If this statement doesn’t go to show how money, since way back then, is just a made up concept, then I don’t know what does. Oh, wait I do know, because when Germany took over the Caroline Islands, therefore having ownership over Yap, in order to push locals into fixing paths and highways, the German Government battled disobedience by simply marking the stones, causing them to be “devalued”. A simple black cross meant the rock was German property. This led to poverty amongst the people, however caused the people of Yap to fix the paths and highways, and after all construction was finished, you know what the German Government did? They just erased the marks and said “okay, here’s your money again” Just like that!

The U.S suffered this same fate in 1932-33 with France, as the French simply marked American gold as French gold with a mere label. This was one of the factors that led to The Bank Panic of 1933. Our story doesn’t differ much from that of the people from Yaps. The value of money truly isn’t valuable at all if it means that simply marking an object that we see as valuable is enough to devalue it. This article is one of the many that changed my perspective on the reality of money.

Speaking of the reality of money, let’s travel to 1980’s Brazil where the economy was at an all time low because of inflation. Chana Joffe-Walt writes her article for npr titled “How Fake Money Saved Brazil” on how Brazil creates fake, you heard me correctly, fake money in order to fix inflation in Brazil. She states four economists aimed to develop a novel currency that was reliable, consistent and reliable, but with a caveat: it would not be tangible or genuine as it wouldn’t have any physical coins or bills, rather it would be simulated. Guess what, this fake money, the real, replaced the existing money at the time, the cruzeiro, and fixed inflation within the span of 6 months. The real, originally known first as “Unit of Real Value — URV”, was an intangible currency, a concept, literally just a thing that someone decided upon calling the new currency of Brazil. Why did the Brazilian’s trust it? Because the creation of the real stabilized people’s faith in money itself. People’s FAITH in money. If money is a real, not dying concept that is actually important to our society, why would people need faith in it? If money is real, how does this unseen, untangleable money simply fix years of inflation, and cause Brazil’s economy to skyrocket? It is because money is simply a fading concept, one that is even resulting in things like e-currency.

What happened to Brazil happened almost 30-40 years ago, so most people would say it’s an outdated luck of the draw occurrence that happened to dawn upon the Brazilian people. What about today you ask? Money still hasn’t changed, it is still as fake as ever. Bitcoin is currently one of our societies hottest topics when it comes to money and e-currency, but what exactly even is e-currency? “The bubble bursts on e-currency Bitcoin” written by Anne Renaut writes on e-money as elaborate codes of great complexity produced through the use of powerful computing technology. These strings are created through a process called “mining”, winch in short, is a tedious, difficult process done through a computer in order to generate a Bitcoin, the biggest form of e-currency. Because Bitcoin is a virtual currency, not only is it more susceptible to cyber attacks, leaks, and can be created by anyone with a computer, just like how URV’s were in Brazil, it’s a non-tangible, non-visible form of currency, and even worse, a non-useable form of currency. You simply can not “pay for things” with Bitcoin. “But is that the whole point of money?” you ask. Yes, that’s what we all think it is, however, that idea is simply fading, and Bitcoin is one of the biggest, modern day contributors that give to that fact.

The thing everyone thinks so highly of, the thing everyone wants, is simply that, just a thing. I was surprised through all of this study how the idea of money I once had in my head simply faded as all the facts came forth to show that money is just a concept. Reading and analyzing all of these sources, not only from the U.S but from other countries, all at different times in the world’s history is astonishing to think about. The dollar we hold in our hands is just paper, and just like how I went over in these sources, it can easily be devalued, replaced, and even turned into nothing but computer data, because money is simply just an object, a thing, a concept. Money is dead.

Roxana’s Story

0:01- the video opens up in a field as a couple are walking along a path that has been carved out for them. With tall trees to the sides of the path and long shrubbery lining the path as the dirt path cuts through. cars must frequent this path as there is a strip of grass in the middle of the path. The man is white and bald with a long beard and a pair of sunglasses on. He is wearing a plaid shirt and a pair of jeans with a watch on his left wrist and a pair of light brown boots on. His sleeves are rolled up which implies the temperature is around 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. The man is on the left and the woman is on the right. The woman is also white with a watch on her left wrist and a pair of brown boots as well. She is wearing a black pair of chinos and a blue sweater with a dark blue vest. The lady is also wearing a necklace

0:02- they are walking and talking with each other along this path

0:03- the shot transitions to a room indoors with our lady friend sitting in a chair, speaking to the cameraman. She has removed her jacket and it is clear that her necklace is silver and quite large in the shape of a heart. She appears to be an American and is slightly overweight. She also appears to be early 40s I would say 41. She is in a room behind her that old people would be seen in. There is a table to the back left behind her with a rocking chair on either side and three windows behind her. There is a chimney behind her and a large painting on a table behind her to the right. On said table is a lamp. There is a also a couch in front of the small table with the painting

0:04- She talks to the cameraman and using little movement of hands when doing so

0:05- the frame switches to a mantle with a miniature statue of the heroic soldiers lifting up the flag during the Battle of Iwo Jima. It also has a flag framed and folded into a triangle on the mantle. In the background it has a statue of three soldiers standing with their guns on their shoulders. There is a blurred wooden frame in the foreground

0:06- The wooden frame is revealed to say “Home of the free because of the brave”

0:07 + 0:08- the shot shifts to a picture of her husband presumably and an old man, both donning the United States military uniform in a frame on the wall. Her husband is on the right and has shaved his head. He is also heavier in this photo than he is present day. The other man, presumably in his 60s is clean shaven and has a head of dark gray hair with lighter gray hair around the temples.

0:09 + 0:10- The shot shifts to a focused image of the bearded man who is the man from the framed photograph and the man from the opening shot. His beard is brown with a few gray hairs. He is wearing a brown and white flannel shirt and his glasses are resting in the middle of his nose as though he is reading something or looking at something. He is looking down. He is in the foreground with the background being blurred. In the background are unhung, framed photos. His glasses are a pair of green oakleys.

0:11 + 0:14- The lady is centered and focused as she is talking to the camera man and using hand and arm gestures when speaking. She appears to be talking passionately.

0:15 + 0:16- The lady is in her bedroom now reading a book as she sits in a wicker rocking chair with a pillow under her butt and behind her back. Her bedpost is in the foreground yet blurred and to her left is a window and a chest that has a pillow and a basket atop it. The pillow says hello in lowercase cursive while the blanket is folded and fluffy. The basket itself is wicker and is resting atop and in the middle of the chest. The chest is blue with two rectangular doors, the left is the same color as the chest, but the right is a lighter blue. They both have brown knobsThere is a framed picture above her to the left and a large plant to her right in a pot. To her further right is one left of a night table.

0:17 + 0:19- The shot zooms in on her face and the book she is reading. She is wearing silver earrings that match her necklace and her left hand is on the page, guiding her eyes as she reads.

0:20- The couple, bearded man and lady, are walking along a path in which a strip of grass is in the middle of two strips of dirt as though cars have gone on this path. The dirt strips are inside of a field of short grass which has longer grass and trees further out along with multiple trees. The man is in a brown and white flannel with a pair of sunglasses on while the lady is in the same purple blouse with a navy blue sleeveless jacket on. She is wearing the same silver necklace and earrings from before. He is wearing a pair of blue jeans while she is in a pair of black chinos as they both have apple watches on their wrists. His is a dark gray whilst hers is a light gray. The mans beard is also clearly more gray than initially shown to be, but still retains much of the brown hair.

https://theworld.org/stories/2015-02-04/vancouver-combats-heroin-giving-its-addicts-best-smack-world

It seems counterintuitive to give addicts access to drugs. In vancouver they have started a program where heroin addicts can go shoot up with a nurse supervising so they don’t overdose and they won’t get arrested. They are just allowing these people to kill themselves legally instead of offering more resources on how to get clean. They are providing these people who are so far gone in their addiction clean needles, antiseptic wipes, and the best heroin. It’s not helping, it is just enabling their addiction.

https://www.insidehook.com/article/smart-home/home-security-privacy

It seems counterintuitive that the system that is meant to protect you is actually harming you. These home security systems are good for physical home invasions and things like that, but the technology is getting out of control. An example of this would be the use of Ring cameras. Sure, they can see if anyone suspicious or out of the ordinary and can help identify them. The downside is that they are easily hacked and that takes away the main reason it’s used, which is for safety.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/mormons-posthumous-baptism-anne-frank_n_1292102?ref=mostpopular

It seems counterintuitive to baptize someone who has already passed. Anne Frank, a young jewish girl who died in the Holocaust has been baptized multiple times into the Mormon church. It seems not only disrespectful to her memory but also to the tragedy that was the holocaust. She died because she chose to keep her religion and someone else trying to take that away is vile. Other holocaust survivors have asked the church not to do this and they continue to do so. It is disrespectful and should be dealt with more seriously.

0:01: A middle aged Asian woman with straight black hair wearing a long sleeve shirt and a t shirt on top of it, is on the phone. She is smiling and laughing on the phone which means she is having a good conversation. The camera moves and follows her as she walks around the kitchen talking. She is in the kitchen which looks old and outmoded. Her arm glides across the counter as she is talking on the phone. One of her sleeves is pushed up her arm leading us to believe she may have just finished cooking since she is in the kitchen. The kitchen is very clean so the food could be already made.

0:02: The camera turns to a old man with glasses, short, thin. His hair is gray so we know that he is old. His glasses are big and black which means his eyesight isn’t very good. This man is possibly the woman’s father. He is sitting at the kitchen table and eating what could be the meal the woman had made for him. The camera moves closer to the old mans face to show that he is eating. He is wearing a light green collared button down shirt which is very dressy meaning he may have had a stable job or is wealthy.

0:03: The camera moves again to show that the woman is sitting across from him at the kitchen table. We know that it is the same woman because the straighten dark hair gets in a small clip. The older man starts smiling and looks happy. This may be for several reasons: she made him a meal and he is thankful, she sat with him as he eats and he enjoys the company, or she mentioned something funny on the phone.

0:04: Now the camera is facing the living rooming, showing up the old man and the woman. The old man is hunched over with his coat on and with his hand on the door nob which means he is leaving. They are both wearing masks. The woman is holding his back which shows he is unstable and old.

0:05: The woman places a plastic bag in his pocket which can mean that the old man is going to the store. Now that the camera shows us a better view of the house we can infer that it is the old mans because it looks antiquated.

0:06: The woman is by herself in a dining room, she looks quite stressed and overwhelmed. We see that she is placing different pills in different containers. This can be easy to infer that these pills are for her father and she needs to make sure he is taking the right doses each day. We see multiple different pill bottles which leads us to believe that the old man is taking different supplements. As she is organizing the pills, we see the wedding band on her ring finger, this means she has partner who she may miss because she is constantly taking care of her father.

0:07: The camera goes up close to the womans face and her head turns as if she is being altered by something. This doesn’t alarm her or cause her anymore stress so we assume it is not the father. This may have been a random noise, phone call, tv, or someone at the door.

0:08-0.10: The woman is helping her father get dressed in a bedroom. We can infer that she takes care of him daily since he changing and wearing different outfits. We can infer that her father is getting sicker each day by how he looks thinner and pale. After he is dressed, the woman lightly pulls the shirt down on the arms which shows that the father is having great weight loss. In the bedroom there is a lamp with fringes on the bottom and curtains that is multicolored with green and yellow.

0:11-0:12: The woman is sitting at the dining room table and the camera shows the old man and the woman. The old man is sitting on the couch with the remote in his hand turning up the tv because he cannot hear it. The woman sitting at the table is on her laptop. The woman looks back and turns her head just a little bit as the tv got louder. She looks irritated and annoyed. This is probably because she had to do something on the computer that needed concentration and now she cant because of how loud the tv is. The camera zooms in on the woman showing her blinking fast and rolling her eyes which shows how irritable she is. She then puts on her headphones and continues working on the computer.

0:13: The woman is laying in the same bedroom that she was in to dress her father. This shows that she may live with her father or is she is staying there. We know that it is the same bedroom because we see the lamp and curtains again. She is on her phone and shaking her head in an overwhelmed kind of way. We can definitely see how stressed out she is with taking care of her father.

0:14- 0:15-: The camera moves back showing a more wide version of how she is laying down and a box appears on the screen. We see the search bar on her phone and she starts to type the words “Medicare tips”. This shows that she really wants help and be there for her father but it is stressing her out and she is not sure if she can take it on alone. We can infer that she is alone because no one else has appeared in the video so far.

0:16-0:17: The women is rummaging through a box of files and then the camera goes out wider to show her face and how focused she is to find whatever she is looking for. The boxes are sitting on top of a workout machine showing the clutter and that there is no time for exercise in the house.

0:18-0:19: The woman is sitting at a desk. Her hand is covering her face as if she is beyond stressed and overwhelmed. She also seems exhausted because her arm is leaning on the table. She has been going through more files since we see them stacked on top of the desk.

0:20- 0:21: The woman is looking out the window where it is sunny and she still is upset. This can definitely show her struggles and hard time. She could be feeing alone or in need of help.

0:22: The old man is sitting in his chair reading a book when the woman runs to him with a type of ipad in her hand. She gets down on her knees to be level with him and to show him something. The woman is wearing blue jeans and a plaid shirt.

0:23-0:24: The camera is zoomed in on their faces because we see the woman smile. She is laughing with the old man and seems genuinely happy. This could be because of something on the ipad or because they are together

0:25-0:26: The woman is putting a pot outside and the words aarp.org/caregiving show up on the screen. We can only see her hands but we know it’s the same woman because she is wearing the jeans and plaid shirt as before.

0:27-0:30: The camera moves to her face where you can see how relieved she is to be doing something that is not causing her stress anymore.

0:00- 0:04 The video opens on a dim bar mostly lit by candlelight. There are bottles in the background and a man in what looks to be a uniform just handed a smiling man in a flannel a drink. A bartender just gave the man in a flannel a drink. In the forefront of the frame are two other men engaged in conversation both with drinks in their hands. They all look like they’re having a fun time enjoying themselves because they are smiling. The man in the flannel shirt looks very drunk because he stumbles and looks down at his cup.

0:05- 0:08 The next thing we see is a guy holding a red solo cup. A man in a blue shirt and an apron is flipping food on a grill. We can see buns, ketchup, and mustard. The people surrounding him are sitting on benches and in the background, we can see trees. He goes to drink it and makes a questioning look, almost wondering, if he’s had enough.

0:08-0:09 We go to a tailgate and a man in a red and white shirt is celebrating looking happy also with a red solo cup. Everyone in this scene is wearing some variation of red white and blue. In the background we can see what looks to be a sports field gate. Directly behind the man in the red and white shirt, we see an SUV. The man is sitting on the back of a white pickup truck. In front of the man are bottles of alcohol, a bowl of chips, and napkins.

0:10-0:11 We go back to the man in the flannel shirt and he digs into his pocket looking for something, we don’t know what.

0:12-0:13 We go back to the man at the barbeque reaching out of his pocket and pulling his car keys looking concerned.

0:14-0:15 Someone off-screen throws the guy in the white shirt their keys and he catches them quickly with a smile on his face looking happy.

0:16-0:17 The guy in the flannel shirt has his keys in his hand and looks up, to us, concerned, questioning if he should keep them. We his internal fight, his eyebrows are furrowed and he looks confused. Until he looks away in resolve putting the keys down out of the camera frame.

0:18-0:19 The barbecue guy looks off-camera and smiles. nod to himself in resolution ‘ I’m drunk I shouldn’t drive.’ and safely put his keys back into their pocket.

0:20- 21 We see a shot of the keys in the man with the flannel’s hand. He reaches and puts the keys into his pocket. We see the trees and the bench from the blue shirt’s barbecue behind a blue and brown backpack where keys are thrown into the pocket on the side.

0:21-0:30 The man in the white shirt tosses the keys back offscreen. We see him get into the back of a car and put on his seatbelt. On the screen, we’re shown the words “ Plan Ahead. Catch a Sober Ride. Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.”

Magic Hour :30 | Pets and People Together

0:01

A young girl who appears to have down syndrome, pokes her head around a wall with an excited look on her face. It seems like she’s in someone’s house. She’s trying to get someone’s attention that is behind that wall.

0:02

The camera turns to who the young girl is looking at. She was looking at a woman who is expressionless who I assume is her mother. The mother is not making eye contact with her, however looking to the side down at something.

0:03

The mother is looking at a digital clock. The time is 5:00. It is still light out so this either takes place in the spring or summer.

0:05

The mother looks away from the clock down at what I assume to be the eye leave of her daughter. She says something with a smile on her face.

0:08

The daughter slowly runs from one side of her kitchen to the other with an excited dog running behind her. She stops to reach into what looks like a large bag of dog food.

0:09

The camera pans down to the floor where we see the daughter feed the dog. The dog begins to eat the food

0:12

Two new people, a man and a woman, appear on the screen. They are outside of a house. The man hands the woman what appears to be another back of dog food.

0:13

The young girl is now running around the neighborhood with her dog on a leash and her mother walking behind her.

0:15

The camera cuts to a different clock inside of what looks like the mother and daughters house because of the paint on the wall. The time is 5:00 again.

0:16

The same girl runs into the kitchen where her mom is waiting for her.

0:18

The little girl feeds her dog.

0:19

The camera cuts to a new building. A man looks like he is responsible for a bunch of dog food because he has boxes in front of him labeled pet food. He’s looking down at something in front of him.

0:20

It seems like a donation because someone dropped another bag of dog food into the box.

0:21

The dog and the little girl are hanging out under her kitchen table while she colors.

0:22

The clock strikes 5 again.

0:23

The dogs bowl gets filled

0:24

The camera cuts to what looks like a parking lot of a building. Someone places a bag of dog food into the trunk of a car.

0:27

The camera cuts back into the little girl’s kitchen where she’s watching her dog eat.

0:28

Over that same image from the 0:27 time stamp, the words “Be a helper”, “foster a pet”, “find a lost pet” and “PetsAndPeopleTogether.org” pop up.
