Visual Rhetoric- PitandThePendulum

0:01- A young, African American man stands at a bar. He is slightly turned around to face the camera/ viewer, holding a drink he presumably just purchased. He is facing two men (both wearing dark t-shirts and holding drinks) who are talking in the foreground of the frame, and are assumably the people he has come to the bar with. The bar is depicted in a hazy orangey-red light, and small glowing lanterns decorate the bar, as well as tea candles and a glowing strip of pale neon. Behind the bar itself, a nook in the wall holds what appears to be a decorative lantern, as well as a plant hanging from the ceiling beside it. Based upon the appearance of the bar, it is safe to assume this is no sports or dive bar, but instead perhaps a bar connected to a restaurant.

0:02- The young man, now centered in the frame between the two talking men in dark shirts, faces the camera. He is holding a whiskey glass filled with a dark liquid (presumably whiskey), and smiles while looking in the direction of the man on the right of the foreground.

0:03- The young man now looks down at the glass in his hand, no longer smiling.

0:04- The scene has now abruptly changed. The camera now focuses on a dazed looking young blond man standing in a backyard during what appears to be a spring or summer barbecue. He is holding a red solo cup, and is facing a man in a blue shirt, who stands, back to the camera, tending to a grill. A woman slightly obscures the young man as the walks across the frame, holding a white disposable paper plate. To the left of the man, a blond woman is sat on a bench at an umbrella-covered patio table, talking with a grey-haired man and a brunette woman, who are both standing with their backs facing the viewer/ camera. On the table there are stacks of unused red solo cups, plates with half eaten food, cups of disposable plastic utensils, and even solo cups that are currently in use.

0:05- The woman holding the disposable plate has slightly moved, and we can see that the young man stands next to the grille, on the side of which has hotdog buns and a bottle of ketchup and mustard.

0:06- The young man, in a similar fashion to the first man, looks down into the contents of his cup.

0:07- The scene changes again. The viewer now sees a man in a red and white baseball tee and jeans, holding a blue plastic cup and sitting on the tailgate of a truck. He smiles at a woman with braided ginger hair, who’s back faces the viewer. A young asian woman, leaning against the side of the truck, faces the ginger woman as well, laughing and holding a clear plastic cup. Behind the ginger woman, a plastic folding table stands open with a bottle of wine, a case of beer, a plate of watermelon, a bowl of barbecue potato chips, and an almost finished clear plastic cup. On the right side of the truck, another table has been set up, this one with a roll of paper towels and what seems to be an open beer bottle. Near that table, a young man and woman are engaged in what seems to be a lively conversation, with the young man gesturing at something with one hand, as his other hand holds an orange cup.

0:08- The young asian woman has turned to face the young man sitting on the tailgate of the truck, and the ginger woman has slightly turned her head towards his direction as well.

0:09- The scene has once again changed back to that of the young black man in the bar, who’s head is tilted downwards. His face is contorted in an expression of what seems to be pain or confusion as he now leans back against the bar counter.

0:10- The young man, head still down with a confused expression, reaches his free hand down into his pocket.

0:11- The scene changes to the young man at the backyard barbecue, who now is without a drink. He too is looking downward with both hands in the pockets of his flannel shirt.

0:12- The young man, having found what he was looking for, tilts his head up slightly. In the palm of his left hand, he holds his keys, while his right hand remains in his pocket.

0:13- The scene again changes to the tailgating man in the red and white shirt. He looks up, squinting, with one hand open, seemingly ready to catch something that is being thrown at him from somewhere off camera

0:14- The man has caught the object being tossed to him. He looks down into his hand in which, he too, holds his keys.

0:15- The scene changes back to the young man at the bar, who is still looking at his keys, but now appears to be deep in thought.

0:16- The young man clenches his hand around the key, looking up and past the camera determinedly at something.

0:17- The young man lowers his hand, and now is looking at something past the camera to his left.

0:18- The scene has changed to the young blond man at the backyard barbecue, who is also looking wistfully at something past the camera to his right.

0:19- The video now shows us the keys in the hand of the first young man. His palm is open and illuminated by a hazy golden light, which could be a clever staging trick, but could also be interpreted as light from the bar setting that he is in.

0:20- At this moment, the scene changes to a hand slipping a blue key being placed into the pocket of a backpack. Based upon the greenery of the background in this scene, it is safe to assume that the hand, key, and backpack all belong to the second young man at the backyard barbecue.

0:21- The scene changes to the man at the tailgate, who’s hand is now in motion once again. He looks off camera at something as a blur of motion leaves his hand. From this still, the viewer can infer that he has tossed the keys back to the individual who first tossed them to him.

0:22- The man in the red and white shirt can now be seen from an outside view sitting in the back seat of a black truck. His window is open, and he is looking down and to his right, presumably to find and put on his seat belt.

0:23- The man in the truck has now is reaching his hand up and pulled his seatbelt across his chest. Across the screen in a white text the words “PLAN AHEAD. CATCH A RIDE SOBER.” appear

0:24-0:29- The same words stay on the screen until the 0:26 mark, during which they change to say “BUZZED DRIVING IS DRUNK DRIVING”. This change occurs as the man fully buckles himself into his seat.

0:00 – 0:01

The ad starts with an African-American, young man in his mid-twenties kneeling on the ground rolling up a thin, yoga-like mat. There are two duffel-like packed bags behind him on the floor with a bucket-hat on top of one of the bags. These items suggest that the man is packing for some sort of outdoor trip. He seems to be very focused on his task as if he is getting ready to go somewhere that day. He is clean shaven, casually dressed, and in a well-kept room where the sun is shining through a window to the inside of a nice home. He is exhaling a mouth full of smoke, not very health conscious, while he is completing the task.

The creator is showing a young, fit, African-American male who is prepping for an outing. The ad shows, without mistake, a big puff of white smoke coming out of his mouth. This puff of smoke seems to be a focal point of this section of the video. It is a key point that the creator intends to make clear to the viewers.

0:01- 0:02

The next scene is a white, young man also in his mid-twenties, packing up a yellow duffel bag. He also seems to be preparing to go somewhere. We only see his arms which appear to be wearing a nice dress shirt, with his sleeves cuffed up a couple of times, indicating a nicer day outside. It is most likely late summer or early fall based on the way these men are dressed.

The creator practically mimics this scene to the previous one, most likely an intentional move. This time it is a white man, similarly dressed, also packing a bag. The two men are most likely going to be friends. The maker of the ad is incorporating diversity in the ad.

0:02 – 0:03

The next scene is what seems to be that very same white, young man, casually but nicely dressed. He is walking down a set of stairs holding a bag on each of his shoulders and also carrying a bag in his right hand. As he is walking down the stairs, he too is exhaling a mouthful of smoke. Again, not very health conscious. At this point, it appears these two young men could be friends and possibly going on an outdoor trip together. Since, there is no evidence of sporting equipment or big pieces of luggage, the trip could be a short, casual, relaxing camping trip.

The designer of the ad is making sure the viewer notices that the white male is exhaling a puff of smoke, too. Here, the viewer is connecting the dots that these two men are sharing a friendship, they smoke, they hang out, they are young, and ready to have fun. It does not appear that these men have huge responsibilities, instead, it seems like they are at a stage of their life where they are more carefree.

0:03 – 0:06

Now, we are shown a close-up of an African-American female, in her mid-twenties, walking towards what seems to be a door of a house, as she is also exhaling smoke. As she turns to her left, she sees the white man smiling at the front door. She is also dressed casually and they both appear to be friends and comfortable with each other, like they have known each other for a while. The friends are a diverse group. They like each other, enjoy the outdoors, enjoy smoking; they have a lot in common. These are the bonds that hold them together.

The creator of the ad introduces a young, African-American female that is also within the same age group as the men. She, too, enjoys to smoke. It seems to be the “thing” of this group. Again, the creator is incorporating diversity and making it clear in the ad campaign.

0:06 – 0:07

The yellow duffel bag is tossed into the trunk of an SUV which already seems to be full of other bags, blankets, a tent bag, and a cooler. It looks like a sunny, beautiful day, but it could be a little cool due to the clothing being worn by the people. The contents of the SUV suggest a camping trip.

We are understanding that the idea is a trip. There are friends meeting up at a house of one of their friends. It seems easy and casual.

0:07 – 0:08

The two men are walking to the trunk of the SUV to pack their bags, they seem to be very friendly with each other and in good spirits. They are talking in a friendly manner about the trip they are about to go on together with their other friends.

The creator is bringing the viewer to a spot where we realize that these friends are close and probably went on a trip in the past. It all seems smooth and natural to them. They are all going with the flow.

0:08 – 0:10

Now, a blonde haired, white girl, also in her mid-twenties, walks in the direction of the two men, passes the African-American female and she, too, exhales a large mouth full of smoke. They all smoke and have this trait in common. The white man closes the trunk of the SUV vehicle and we can assume that all four friends are in the SUV, since we see the passenger side doors on the SUV closing. They are going on their camping trip.

The creator introduces another female, white, blonde, and a smoker. She seems friendly and happy. She is the last one of the group. It is a diverse group of four, two males, and two females.

0:10 – 0:19

The Afrian-American man is in the passenger front seat wearing a seatbelt. Both women and the white man are in the back seats with their seat belts fastened. No one is in the driver’s seat. The African-American man in the front passenger seat looks behind him at the other man and women in the back seat. There is communication among the friends. They all seem to have a concerned and confused look on their face because no one is in the driver’s seat.

The creator is clearly making a statement that no one is driving. Each of the individuals blew smoke from their mouths, indicating to the viewer that they all feel as if they cannot drive. At this moment, it is more clear that this is not cigarette smoke, but marijuana smoke.

0:19 – 0:24

Then, the African-American man turns around, smirks with a hint of disappointment, then nods and smiles. Then, the other three friends in the back seat start smiling and laughing. At the same time, all four friends unbuckle their seat belts and exit the SUV.

Here, it is quite evident that the creator of the ad is demonstrating safe driving and self awareness. It is a public service announcement that no one should drive under the influence.

0:24 – 0:26

The African-American man opens the trunk with his three friends next to him. They are all smiling and laughing. They seemed to be relaxed, carefree and having fun. The blonde, white girl reaches into the trunk to begin to unpack their belongings. They are no longer going on a camping trip.

They wisely, on their own, pulled out of the trip. The creator wanted to prove that you can indeed cancel a trip, even up to the very last second, if it is necessary.

0:26 – 0:30

Next scene, all four of the friends are now sitting out front of the house talking and laughing with each other. Three of them are in what look like camping chairs and the African-American man is sitting on the ground on top of a blanket. All of them are in long pants and long sleeve shirts. The four friends are all sitting in a semi-circle next to the SUV, parked in the driveway. The two men high-five each other. They all have smiles on their faces and do not seem to be disappointed that they did not go on their camping trip. They all came to the realization that they each smoked that day and none of them were able to drive. They are making the best out of the moment, still spending quality time with each other, and valuing their friendships.

A happy outcome is left with the viewer. The creator wants to end the ad, purposefully, on a positive note. Even though there is no trip, after all the packing and planning and meeting up, the friends still camp out, but on the lawn outside of the house.

Rhetoric: The director chose this particular scenario to show the audience that being responsible when you are knowingly under the influence of any drug, is imperative. This act saves lives. As little or as much intake of any drug, legal or illegal, cannot ever be combined with driving a motor vehicle. In the last scene, when all four friends finally discover that each of them “smoked,” it was clear that they knew, immediately, they were not driving and that their trip was done. A smart move on their part. They could have saved each other’s lives that day with that one decision. Note: The creator of the ad respectfully included closed captioning (CC) for the hearing impaired.

Logos: This part of the video is when we individually see each one of the friends come into the scene exhaling smoke. It is from that moment when we, as the audience, realize that the trip needs to be called off immediately. It is logical to the audience that drugs interfere with and impair one’s senses.

Pathos: We feel for the characters that, after so much work and preparation, the trip is not going to happen.

Ethos: This is an awareness video and a drug impaired video. The author sends a message that you cannot ever drive under the influence. The creator clearly shows all of the individuals at the end of the video, looking at each other and exiting the car. Here at this moment, the viewer sees that each character felt the same; do not drive under the influence.

She is also dressed casually and they both appear to be friends. From the text on the screen said by the young man, “Yo camping buddy,” we now know that this is a camping trip with friends.

0:06 – 0:07

The yellow duffel bag is tossed by a man into the trunk of an SUV which already seems to be full of other bags, blankets, a tent bag, and a cooler. It looks like a sunny, beautiful day, but it could be a little cool due to the clothing being worn by the people.

0:07 – 0:08

The two men are walking to the trunk of the SUV to pack their bags, they seem to be very friendly with each other and in good spirits. One of the men says, “Hey, you guys ready.” This statement also indicates that others will be accompanying them on this trip.

0:08 – 0:10

Now, a blonde haired girl walks in the direction of the two men, passes the other female and she, too, exhales a large mouth full of smoke. The second man closes the trunk of the SUV vehicle and we can assume that all four friends are in the SUV since we see the passenger side doors on the SUV closing.

The first man is in the passenger front seat wearing a seatbelt. Both women and the second man are in the back seats with their seat belts fastened. The man in the front passenger seat looks behind him at the other man in the back seat and says from the text displayed on the screen, “Dude, I thought you were driving.” He then replies to the first girl and says, “I thought you were driving.” Then, the first girl says with a concerned look on her face, “Oh, I never thought I was driving.” Lastly, the Blonde girl chimes in and says “I – I definitely can’t drive.”

0:17 – 0:26

Then, after an initial look of disappointment and shock, all four friends realize the trip will not happen because they are all too high to drive. This initial let-down quickly turned into smiles, laughter, and acceptance on all of their faces. They all realize that they are too high to drive. So, they exit the vehicle at once, go to the trunk, and open it to unpack all of their bags.

0:26 – 0:30

Next scene, all four of the friends, all the same age, are now sitting out front of the house talking and laughing with each other. Three of them are in what look like camping chairs and one man is sitting on the ground. The four friends are all sitting in a semi-circle next to a vehicle, with a big blanket on the ground under them, it seems to be that they are sitting near a driveway. Rhetoric: The director chose this particular scenario to show the audience that being responsible when you are knowingly under the influence of any drug, is imperative. This act saves lives. “Child Car Safety”

0:00-0:01: In the first second of the video, there is an African American family of four that is on the porch infant of their house. The husband who is carrying a stroller on his back and a couple of bags with toys, a cup, a bagel in his hand. His wife is next to him carrying their son who is about 2 years old in one arm and a cup and apple sauce in her other hand, with bad on her back. In the middle of them is their little girl who seems to be around 5 years old. The parents both seem to act confident in what they are doing. However, their hands are full of items that I’ve stated before.

0:02-0:04: The family is starting to walk towards their car, the parents seem fairly happy like they have everything under control. As the mom flips her hair the camera cuts to her, she makes a face likes she got this. Then the camera cuts to the family again. The father is looking at his daughter, his face looks pretty serious. The child seems happy and excited. The mom doesn’t seem to be involved in what the father is telling the daughter. In the last split second of 0:04 seconds the camera cuts to the daughter looking at the toys.

0:04-0:07: The camera shows a close of the little girl who starts to become more intrigued with the toys and grabbed toy rings from the bag that the father is carrying. Then the cameras cut to the whole family with the mom behind the father and the little girl. However, since the girl is pulling on the toy, the father begins to start dropping the stroller and the bags with the bagel in his mouth. The cameras then cut to the mother with her face in concern and it looks like she is going to have trouble with all of things in her hands since the dad was dropping everything.

0:08-0:16: The camera goes back on to the family where the mother is now trying to lift up kid back up into her arms where she is comfortable to hold him. Behind her is the father who is trying to get everything in his hands and on his back situated, still with the daughter trying to grab the toy from the bad. Next the cameras show the dad trying to eat his bagel with the bag coming off of his shoulders, with toys falling out of his arms and a cup and grey suit jacket in his hands. After he throws the stroller back on his shoulder has the mom is walking infant of him, now that she has everything situated. Both parents has a face of concern and aggravation. Slowly walking behind the mother, the husband is trying to get to the car with trying to prevent everything from falling out of his hands. It looks like he is struggling because he is walking very slow and steady.

0:17-0:25-The father drops all of the stuff as the car door opens for his daughter to get inside, then the camera shows the mom carrying her son to the car to put him in his carseat. Then it goes back to the dad fastening his daughter into her carseat behind the driver seat. As he is doing that she is eating popcorn out of a little bowl, with a smile on her face. As he fastens the the seatbelt, the daughter has a tantrum and spills popcorn everywhere in the car while she is crying and screaming. The dad has a distraught facial expression trying not to get hit by the popcorn. Then the screen cuts the the mother who is buckling her son into the carseat next to the daughter behind the passenger seat.

0:25-0:30- The screen then goes sea blue with a infant carrier carseat to the left, a carseat next to it. Next to that carseat is a booster seat with a seat belt across of it and to the far right is just a seatbelt. This indicates the timeline of carseats as the child gets older, until they don’t need a careseat.

Rhetoric:

The ad shows the specific events in the scene to show that parenting is a hard job and not everything is going to go as planned. However, the number one priority as a parent is to keep your children safe no matter what, even if they make getting into the car a struggle for you. So bringing the child’s safety into this ad helps get the message across that carseats and sea belts are so important when driving with a child. It’s for their protection and safety.

Logos:

The logos is that the family is ready to go out somewhere with their kids, since they have their hands full of things specifically for the kids.

Pathos:

When walking to the car, the daughter makes it hard for the parents to keep everything in their hands when pulling on the toy. This makes aggravated and frustrated because now they are struggling when it could’ve been an easy walk to the car.

Ethos:

This ad “Child Car Safety”, was made by NHTSA, which is a government agency and was uploaded by Ad Council. This shows that this video is credible and reliable.

Rhetoric Visual Rewrite – Water

Hustle :30 Spanish | Child Car Safety | Ad Council

0:00 – We open the scene with a young little girl wearing braids standing in between the border of what seems to be a hallway separating the outside of the bedroom and the bedroom itself. We see she is facing the direction of the bedroom, the bed is undone meaning that someone is still in bed and that could be the reason why the girl is walking towards the room, to wake them up.

0:00 – A second barely passes by and we can conclude that it’s the parent’s bedroom. we can tell by looking at the bed frame and the covers, they don’t seem to resemble kids/youth linkings (no toys laying around, no indications its someone older around the teenage years)

0:01 – During the first second of the ad, we get a shot that’s used in most sequences where the camera is moving as if we are walking with the little girl. We get a switch to her face and by the looks of it she looks lost, maybe as if she was expecting something that never happened.

0:01 – We get a change of emotions now, her eyes dilate and her facial expressions go from confused to shock

0:02 – The parents get revealed, the mom springs upwards with her hair tangled meanwhile the dad is laying next to her still asleep, based on the mom’s initial reaction to seeing her, she looks confused as if she shouldn’t be there.

0:03 – The mother has been hit with a wave of realization when she makes eye contact with her daughter and then makes a sharp turn to her right to what seems to be her reaching for an item, which could be a clock and she’s about to realize they are either late for an event or late for school.

0:03 – The clock reads 9:37 and she looks scared and surprised, she shifts her gaze at the clock to her husband whom I think is about to be woken up with shocking information. They must be late for school if just by thinking how the child wakes their parents up to tell them that she needs to be at school.

0:04 – The mother pushed the father, waking him up. They both roll out of bed rushing to their other children for they all had overstepped and are late for school/work.

0:05 – The little girl’s brother is still sleeping, also confirming that he overslept along with the family. The father has his arms extended firmly grabbing the blinds, I assume he is about to wake up the son by pulling the blinds.

0:06 – The dad pulls the blinds and the son immediately wakes up, going through morning emotions consisting of laziness and not wanting to move an atom of their body with hopes of going back to sleep.

0:07 – Dad sees her up so he goes to the next thing he has to do in order to get everyone ready for the day that they failed to wake up on time.

0:08 – Someone is preparing cereal with a huge portion of honey nut cheerios

0:08/0:09 – The milk carton is finished barely having enough milk to fill up the bowl

0:09 – The dad is still in his robe and PJs, he empties the carton of milk while preparing breakfast

0:09 – The dad shakes the carton hoping it would give more milk, and to the side, we see another child in shorts and a blue top without shoes on, she seems to have overslept and is rushing for a late breakfast. Grabbing the nearest edible thing to have on the go.

0:10 – The daughter seems unfazed about being last as she dances in a spiral motion while dad is still searching for an extra droplet of milk.

0:12 – Mom is scrambling through millions of pairs of shoes, meanwhile another child is holding soccer cleats. The mom could be scrambling through the pile of shoes looking for the other half of the girl’s cleats. The look on her face gives frustration and unpreparedness vibes.

0:13/0:14 – The mother finds the other half of the cleat and hands it to the daughter with relief and happiness. Meanwhile, the daughter has a face that expresses “wow mom, we really mess up and it’s funny watching you struggle”

0:15 – The mother looks even more confused after the daughter took the clear and left the room, maybe the daughter was disappointed that the mother was taking quite a bit of time looking for the cleat and how they are late for school.

0:16/0:17 – The dad seems to have changed and is in the laundry room getting clothes but a problem came up and from the looks of the clothing they seem to have turned pink.

0:18 – The dad pulls the clothes out and realizes that they had changed colors. The look of him realizing that they will have to wear pink clothes for either work/school is hitting him hard.

0:18 – The point of view switched from someone looking at the dad to the dad looking at a younger child, they both looked disappointed and prepared to wear clothes of color they weren’t intending to wear.

0:19 – The boy looks at the dad juggling the clothes trying to find a pair that hadn’t turned pink but with no luck, he looks up and yells “mama” calling for his mom to tell her that the clothes had turned pink

0:21 – The family is all in the car, the camera zooms out of the car with everyone putting their seatbelts on with the pink outfits

0:22 – The dad seems relieved that everything is on track for the most part despite waking up late and having their clothes changed.

0:24 – The parents look at each other giving the “we are never going to ever sleep again” look and drive off to wherever they have to go.

 • 0:00-0:03: When the video opens up, we see a couple, a man and a woman, walking down a path with each other and it looks like they are smiling at each other an engaging conversation. The path is baige/brownish, and in the background, we have a lot of bushes and trees along with a nice blue sky with some clouds. The man is wearing a shirt with a checkered/square pattern along with some nice blue jeans and boots, and the woman is wearing a blue shirt with a vest overtop and some dark pants and shoes. I think the videographers filmed it like this to show to us the kind of life the woman and the man normally have and like to do with each other along with where.
 • 0:04-0:05: The video switches over to the woman exchanging a conversation at the camera to the cameraman. The woman looks like she is somewhere in her 40s now that we have a close up, and in the room, there is a lot of chairs and equipment that look like they are for old people. The room is white with quite a bit of windows, and it looks good in there.
 • 0:05-0:06: There are little statues/action figures of US soldiers, and one of them is holding the US flag. Along side is a little plaque that says “Home Of The Free Because Of The Brave.” This makes it clear the household has to be military in some way or another.
 • 0:06-0:09: The video switches over to a picture on the wall, and it looks a lot like the man in the beginning that was walking with the woman. It makes it clear that he has a lot of military background because he is wearing a lot of green military clothing, and he is also with another fellow trooper in the picture.
 • 0:09-0:11: There is a closeup of the man now, and he also looks like he is in his 30s-40s, although I’m guessing he is a little younger than the woman. He has light grey glasses, and he has a big mustache and beard.
 • 0:11-0:15: From watching this view, the woman is angled a little differently in this one and using a lot more facial expressions and hand movement in her conversation. I am guessing it is because she might want to get something important across. Also, I had just noticed the grey heart necklace.
 • 0:15-0:20: The woman is reading her book on one of the chairs. There are two camera angles in this time frame. The first one has her reading but it also gives a really good look at the room around her. I see a grey compartment to her right along with a vase with a plant in it to her left. The curtains on the window are grey ish and there are a couple of paintings on the wall. The second camera angle zooms in really far in. First, it goes a little bit at the book, but then it gradually transitions to point at the woman.
 • 0:20-0:22: The woman and the man are walking down the same path as the beginning, but this time, they are both smiling and looking off to the side, and they are holding hands. Also, the camera angle is definitely zoomed in more towards them and makes less of an emphasis on the background behind them.
 • 0:22-0:30: The last thing is that there is a white screen that advertises AARP.

Battle Buddy | Veteran Crisis Prevention : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9C3Vh-BSHs

0:01. The video opens on what may be a farm. The landscape is light brown dotted with greenery, seemingly indicating a hot climate dotted with scraggy plant life. Two older-looking men stand beside what appears to be a fence. One man is white while the other is black. The white man wears a cowboy hat, the black man wears what appears to be a baseball hat. The fence has a section missing, as well as boards leaned against it. A wheelbarrow and a box is in frame near the missing section of fence. The paint on the fence boards is uneven. Some of it appears fresh. Visually, it seems the fence is broken.

0:02. The camera zooms in the old white man. The man’s folds in his chin show he is somewhat overweight. The lines in his forehead and around his mouth visually indicate his age. The other man is there, but he is currently working on the fence alone. He is dragging a wire mesh over the gap between two fence posts. The black man, first on the right of the white man is now on his left. His baseball hat is now clearly visible. It is decorated with gold text. The text cannot be read.

0:04. The camera reverses back to the elderly man in the cowboy hat. His hat is a dark blue or black, and his shirt is blue with a plaid pattern. The first two buttons of his shirt are undone, possibly to make working easier. At the bottom of the frame, his hands are working with the wire and the fence. From the previous shot, we know he is dragging the wire fence from left to right, covering an area in the fence with no wire. It would seem he is repairing a hole.

0:05. The camera now clearly centers on the elderly black man. His black baseball hat clearly reads: “Vietnam Veteran”. From this shot, without ever explicitly saying it, the director shows that the two older men are both Vietnam veterans. We can see clearly his grey beard that indicates his advanced age. His face creases above his eyes and his hand, visible on the fence, has visible lines from aging. The shrubbery in the background is blurred to focus the viewer on the man with the baseball hat.

0:06. The shot returns to the elderly white man. He leans on the fence and grabs it with his hand, seemingly using it to support himself while holding wire section in place. Once again, the background is blurred to focus the viewer on the elderly man in the foreground. He is pointing to the left, presumably at the elderly black man, the only other person who was visible in the first landscape shot.

0:08. The elderly man in the baseball hat looks to the right. His eyes widen and he tilts his head about 15 degrees to the left. Visually, this expressions seem to indicate some degree of concern.

0:11. Now, the shot pans out to center the fence. The elderly black veteran is passing a wooden board, painted white, to the elderly white man. The man in the cowboy hat is carefully lowering the board on the end of the empty section of fence. Some of the trees in the background have come back into focus, pulling the attention away from just one of the men to both of them.

0:13. The camera zooms in once again on the man in the cowboy hat. The man’s face widens and his mouth opens again, showing he is talking to the other man. His head is tilting to the right, communicating that he is listening to the man out of frame. The background blurs once again to focus the viewer on the foreground.

0:17. The man on the left with the baseball hat is once again the only person on screen. the background is still blurred. This jump cut of the camera from one face to the other is a technique often used to demonstrate dialogue between two people. The man’s face contorts slightly and his eyes narrowed. This communicates that he is concerned or pondering something the other man said.

0:19. The shot reverses again to the elderly white man. A dialogue is essentially certain between the two men. Based on their age, it is likely they are both veterans of the Vietnam war. His head is tilted even further to the left. His expression is somewhat exasperated, but he has a much smaller frown in comparison to earlier. The background is still blurred.

0:21. The camera reverses once again to the elderly black man. He is now cracking a small smile, showing teeth. Was it something the other man said? Very likely, considering the only other thing happening is the moving of the fence post. the background is once again blurred, but the camera is not nearly as zoomed in, showing more of the fence and the board the two are holding.

0:22. The shot reverses again to the elderly white man. He is standing up straight, and his face has curved into a wry smile. Evidently, he seems pleased with the other man’s reaction to whatever he said. The man is the only thing in the foreground, and the background is once again blurred to prevent the viewer’s eyes from wandering away from their intended subject.

0:23. The camera pans out to show the two elderly men aligning the unsecured wooden board with the rest of the boards in the fence. The elderly white man, who was initially working alone, is now working in tandem with the other man. In 23 seconds, the film maker has constructed a visual narrative where a man begins work on his fence alone and works with someone, presumably his friend, by the end.

0:24. The camera moves out and down. The two men, now facing each other, move into the background. The elderly white man, positioned on the left, leans on the fence and is standing closer to the other man. He is making a gesture with his hands — possibly a gesture to accompany his talking. The camera focuses on a hammer on a stump in the bottom right of the frame. Reasonably, the hammer is likely nearby for repairing the fence. In large white text, the sentences” Don’t Wait. “and “Reach Out.” is displayed.

0:27. The final scene is an all black background with white text. It reads: “Find resources at VA.GOV/REACH”. This indicates it is an advertisement placed by the department of veterans affair to raise public awareness of some resources available to veterans.
