0.01- The video begins with a woman and man walking on what looks like a path. The woman is looking at the man and is speaking to him. They don’t seem to be a couple because there is some distance between them. It is sunny out and there is trees on the sides of the path.
0.03- The woman has a smile, looking as if she enjoys the company of the man.
0.04- The view is changed and now looks to be as the woman is being interviewed, she’s looking directly at the camera. The scenery has changed and is now in either her home or someone else’s.
0.06-The camera is now showing us small military statues and a flag on maybe a bookshelf, this tells us someone in the household was once in the military or may know someone in the military.
0.08- The cameraman then switches to show us a picture on the wall. The picture is of two males wearing U.S Army uniform. One of the men looks like the man shown in the beginning of this video. He seems to have retired from the army and embraces his time served by decorating his home with it.
0.10- There is a closeup of the man now, he looks like he may be in his late 30s or early 40s. He seems to be looking down at something.
0.13- The woman is still talking but the angel has changed and her attention has changed too, she now seems to be looking at someone other than the cameraman. As she speaks, she uses her hands.
0.15- The same woman is now sitting in a rocking chair reading a book, she looks to be in a different room.
0.21- The video is showing the woman and man walking down the path again but this this the camera is closer and they are both looking to their right, the woman smiling. They are also holding hands indicating that they are a couple.
0.22-0.30 The last bit of the video is a screen that advertises the AARP caregiving.
0:00-0:03- The short begins with what appears to be three friends hanging out together at a bar that is illuminated with red lights. The man in the middle, presumably the subject of the ad, is holding a dark drink that appears to be near finished. The two others talk, without their friend.
0:04- 0:06-Hard cut to a man wearing a flannel at what appears to be some sort of barbecue. It seems like it is the 4th of July. The man has a red solo cup in his hand, and on the left hand side of the screen is his friend working the grill. The man suddenly looks down into his red solo cup right as he is about to take a sip.
0:07-0:09- Hard cut to a man wearing jeans sitting in the back of a truck in what appears to be a parking lot. He has a blue solo cup in his hand. In the background, multiple varieties of alcoholic drinks can be seen, including liquor and beer. There is a bowl of chips in a bowl on a table to the mans left. Based on context clues, I would have to assume the man is tailgating for a football game and getting drunk with his friends.
0:10- The first man reaches into his pockets for his car keys
0:11-0:13- The second man reaches into his pocket and grabs his keys.
0:14- The third man catches his keys midair, as if he had thrown them to himself. He seems excited to drive.
0:15-0:17- The first man looks at his keys, then looks upwards, indicating that he is contemplating something.
0:18-0:20- The second man is staring longingly and cracks a slight smile. He also seems to be contemplating making a decision in his mind.
0:20-0:21- The first man is seen putting his key back into his pocket, which is immediately followed by the third guy putting his keys back into a side pocket of his backpack.
0:21-0:22- The third man tosses his keys away, presumably to a friend or somebody that is going to be driving him.
0:23-0:30- The video cuts to a clip of the third man in the passenger seat of a truck putting his seatbelt on as his designated driver takes off.
I believe that the theme of this PSA is a very simple and easy to follow one. Do not get behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle when you are under the influence of alcohol. The reason that this advert is compelling is not because it has a deep intricate meaning. The meaning is easy to see. The video, to me, is compelling because of how they choose to go about walking us through the decision making process of making the choice that could be saving yours and others lives. I believe that me freezing the video on every frame allowed me to really understand the nuances of the video more, as there is no way I could have came to the conclusion that I came to in a mere 30 seconds.
The whole purpose of a research paper is to explain the results found in different studies. In order to help people have easy accessibility for finding different studies, google created a website called google scholar. On the surface, google scholar seems like it would be extremely helpful for students especially when dealing with a research paper. There are millions of studies that already have the work cited written out, results stated clearly, and links to hundreds of other related sources in order to help the student find whatever they are looking for. However, google scholar fails to truly succeed in achieving the overall goal of helping demonstrate research.
While trying to find the first couple of sources for this research paper, I came to attention. I quickly had to change my topic fast. I was originally going to write about how the Phillies would weaken their defense prior to the 2022 MLB season which ultimately strengthened their overall team. This was due to the added players like Kyle Schwarber who is historically terrible on defense, but he was a key addition to the offensive production. When I typed in “Phillies” into google scholar just to see what would pop up, I was shown an article talking about chemistry as the first search. This is because the article was written by Kiril Streletzky and George D. J. Phillies. If you go past that singular article, you are left with hundreds all written by George D. J. Phillies. There may be students ecstatic over finding his chemist work, but personally I was limited in what I could research. If I was limited in what I could research, imagine how many other kids also had the same issues that I had. Unfortunately, I had a topic I would have been extremely passionate about, but I was forced to switch topics due to google scholar limiting coverage.
Regardless of the limited content, the language barrier on google scholar is often overlooked. While using Google, in order to switch between different languages one just has to change one setting. This then changes every word to whatever language one changed it to. Since Google Scholar is a specialized search engine from Google, it is thought to work relatively the same way. When changing the language in Google Scholar, the settings are changed to that language, but none of the articles are changed. If they are able to change the contents of Google’s articles, it is shocking that Google Scholar does not also just translate them. Of the few articles already on Google Scholar, the language barrier drastically lowers that number. A search engine made strictly for research is limiting how much research one may do strictly based on the language they speak.
Additionally to the language barrier, the accessibility of each article can limit the amount one’s ability to research. The few times that there is an article that one can use, it is often shut down behind the paywall that blocks researchers from the work. Most schools like Rowan do allow their students to access these websites for no additional cost, but that does not include all of them. While testing out google scholar, the first article of “solar system” was written in 1966. It is blocked by a pay wall of $35.95 for 48 hour access for thirteen pages. With an extremely large amount of information learned about the solar system in the past couple of decades, the information in that article most likely has no revelation or truth anymore. For this essay alone with upwards of ten sources, it could cost over $400. With most of the articles not even being used, a researcher without a university will have to break the bank just to support their claim.
One of the key features of Google Scholar is that it presents you the citation for the article, and the articles show the researcher their works cited page. On paper this sounds amazing, but there is a huge flaw. According to Penn State University, they made an article talking about the pros and cons of using Google Scholar, “No wonder that authors, journals and the numerical-chronological designations (publication year, volume, issue and starting page numbers) are mis-identified for millions of documents. As a consequence, the citation-matching algorithm of GS is equally unreliable, often yielding excessive and obviously absurd numbers of false positives and false negatives.” Although one may cite a website, by citing it incorrectly, it is still considered plagiarism. Many researchers most likely used those citations listed by Google Scholar without even realizing they are plagiarizing. Also according to the Penn State article on the pros and cons of Google Scholar, they followed the number of citations written for one of their other articles. It was reported that the article was cited a total of 57 times. When entering the article, Google Scholar says that that number is actually 55 times cited, but they can only show 53 times. With every number being different, it shows how Google Scholar gives a rough estimate number. The Google Scholar algorithm used to find these numbers are obviously flawed. If the algorithm cannot correctly get the number of citations, the algorithm most likely messes up the other numbers used in the citations.
Although Google Scholar in theory is a great idea to help researchers, it is extremely counterintuitive to the extreme flaws it has. The limited number of articles affects the variety that one can research and how in depth they want to get. That number can exponentially decrease when implementing the language barrier which Google does not have. If the language barrier does not affect a researcher, they may be limited by the pay wall that blocks a majority of the websites on Google Scholar. Since most schools do pay for a generous amount of websites, the small chance that one can find a website they could use, the citation listed by Google Scholar could be wrong. By dealing with all the issues with Google Scholar, they can give someone a big thank you by causing a researcher to plagiarize their entire paper.

A teenage/young adult aged girl is sitting on her bed in a dark room. The girl appears to be black and has a unique hairstyle. She has a cell phone in hand and seems to be alone in the room. There is also a mirror in the corner of the room and the only person reflected in the mirror I the girl who is sitting on the bed. There is a glimmer of sunlight coming through but overall the room is quite dark. The setting of this girl being isolated in a dark bedroom in what we know is the middle of the day because of the sunlight gives off sad and depressing vibe. The fact that she is by herself and the mirror in the corner essentially reaffirms this really gives a sense of loneliness as well.
Time Stamp: 0:02
We now see the cell phone on the bed without the girl holding it and it appears to be showing a text thread. Most of the text thread is blurry but there is a reply that reads “it’s all in your head… just think happier thoughts”. Clearly, this girl is going through a struggle and the fact that she’s dropped the phone on the bed kind of shows that texting people isn’t helping. The text messages also reaffirm the feeling of loneliness because if she had people around that she could talk to then she wouldn’t result to texting. I also think the fact that portions of the text are blurred out and only the simple and some what cliche response is visible creates the idea that her thoughts/feelings are being overlooked and/or misunderstood.

This frame shows her face in the light for the first time in the video. She has a few piercings and multicolored hair. She has just read the text message and appears hopeless after reading the reply of someone who she reached out to hoping to get uplifting support from.

We’ve now moved on from the first person we’ve encountered and we are shown two new people. The two new people are two girls who look around the same age as our previous character. The girls look very much a like and appear to be in a house together so maybe they could be sisters. The main person in this frame seems to be the person in the foreground. They are in a light room, maybe a kitchen or dining room. There is at least one other person in the room according to this frame which means she may be doing something with family or friends. But they are looking down with a look on their face that indicates that something isn’t right. The person in the background seems to be in the middle of doing something and doesn’t quite notice the feelings of our foreground person. This frame creates a slight feeling of being unseen through a personal struggle.
Time Stamp: 0:08
The attention has now shifted away from our foreground person and is now focused very much on our background person. The person in the background has looked up and noticed the look/body language of the foreground character. She has a look on her face of confusion and uncertainty as she likely doesn’t know why the person in the foreground is feeling this way. Based on what we’ve seem so far, it seems like the producers have made this video about recognizing someone who is struggling and the difficulty it presents.
Time Stamp: 0:11
We’ve now encountered our 4th person in this video. It’s a young black man who appears to be having dinner with friends or family. There are 2 people in the foreground but they’re blurred and the focus is solely on the young man. The setting is a light room and it’s night time. We know it’s night time because there is a window behind the young man that shows it’s dark outside. In this frame, the young man clearly looks bothered and as if something is going on that no one seems to know about. We can assume this based on his facial expression, slouchy body language, and the fact that he’s stirring his drink aimlessly while the others around him seem to be socializing. To really put emphasis on the fact that he’s struggling, the producers set this lit up room with people socializing but it seems like they purposely put the window that shows darkness behind him to show that he’s going through some sort of struggle.

We’re now back to our first character who is laying on her bed with her phone in hand in the same setting as she was when we first encountered her. She still seems as if she’s struggling and looks like she’s attempting to find help on her phone. Her phone is giving off a very bright reflection of light that looks like it’s almost going into her face. To me this could signify a couple of things. I think this could mean that a message is getting through to her or that her phone is consuming her and she’s fallen into some kind of void through social media, texting, etc.
Time Stamp: 0:13-0:15
We see a montage of social media posts that seem to be spreading messages of encouragement and also maybe some criticism. Some of the messages said things like “Good Vibes Only” with bright colors. One of the others had a different message tho as it said “Harden Up” which seems like it was maybe someone trying to say if you’re feeling this way you have to shake it off and stop being soft. I think these frames are what was happening on the phone in the preceding frame. This would make sense because the girl in that scene is going through a struggle and is on her phone when she seems to be trapped in the social media void. This is likely included to show that social media doesn’t always have the answers for these kinds of struggles and can sometimes further confuse/damage the person going through the struggle.

A different young girl appears to be laying on a couch visibly stressed out/struggling. It’s a young white girl with a very alternative/goth look. I think they use someone with this kind of look purposefully because there seems to be a stereotype around people who use alternative/goth styles that they tend to have a struggle of some sort. This also isn’t the first time we’ve seen this type of style as our first person we encountered also had a unique/alternative style.
Time Stamp: 0:19
A young asian man appears to be in the same room as the alternative/gothic white girl and is visibly saying something to her.
Time Stamp: 0:21
I’m assuming the young asian man asked her a question and maybe a serious one at that because in this frame we see her nodding and saying something as the camera is now much more zoomed and focused on her.
Time Stamp: 0:22
The two characters from before who I mentioned may be sisters have returned and the one who seemed concerned for the other appears to be comforting the other by holding her hand and talking with her.
Time Stamp: 0:24
The young black girl, the first person we saw in the video, is now back on screen and she appears to have met with a friend somewhere. The friend seems to be talking to her and comforting her.
Time Stamp: 0:25
This frame is the same setting as the preceding frame but it’s zoomed all the way out and has text across it that reads “When the world doesn’t listen, be the friend who does”. The 3 frames preceding this now make a lot more sense as they were likely the friends who came to listen and talk with their friends who were going through something.
Time Stamp: 0:27-End of Video
This frame runs out the video and it’s a black screen with text that reads “Seize the awkward… Learn how to help a friend with their mental health at seizetheawkward.org” . This essentially sums up what the whole video was about which was how to recognize someone who is going through a mental health struggle and how to help them through it/be there for them.

0:01- in this opening scene you get a young asian decent woman with black straight hair on the phone and walking parallel to the counter while dragging her hand across the edge. She seems interested in the conversation because she has a big smile by the end of second 1. The kitchen looks old and outdated for a woman of her age so it’s to be assumed she is in a parents home or maybe a grandparent.
The girl is wearing a long sleeve shirt with a t- shirt on top, this is important because the arm that is touching the counter has its sleeve rolled up causing me to believe she has just finished cooking. You know she is finished cooking because the counters are completely clean and so is she which means she has already cleaned up the kitchen mess.
The camera is also moving and following her as she moves across the kitchen as well as it is placed outside of the doorframe to the kitchen
0:02- In the next clip we get a switch in perspective and we move to the kitchen where we find a man who looks to be the girl’s father. He is sitting at a table and presumably eating the meal the girl just cooked for him. The frame slightly moves upwards from the table to his face to show that he’s eating.
This man’s image was particularly picked out; he has very thin, very short, gray hair. And big black framed glasses. These glasses look to be thick, telling me he has bad eyesight. They also specifically put him in a collared shirt which tells me he at one point maintained a stable job where his dress attire was put together. But I infer that he is no longer working because of the way his bones show through the shirt showing how frail he is.
0:03- this frame moves slightly to the left showing more that there is a figure sitting across the table from him, assuming this is the girl that was just standing next to the counter. I am assuming this because the figure has black straight hair like the girl before. As the frame moves over towards her figure the old man looks up from his food and smiles assuming it’s because of something this girl has said on the phone or because she sat down with him.
0:04- this clip has a perspective switch as well, the camera has now been placed in the kitchen and looking in the opposite way through the door frame (so looking out to the living room). The old man and the girl are both standing with blue medical masks on. The girl has her hand on his back showing that he is unstable and she is helping him. The old man has a coat on and is holding on to the door handle to stabilize himself as well as because he is leaving the home.
0:05- while looking at this clip in the same frame as the other you can now tell that the girl is placing a plastic bag into his coat pocket. Assuming they are going to the store.
You can tell by the decor in the living room that this is in fact not her home and is definitely the old mans just based on the old fashioned rug under the table, the old clock, the couch, and the chosen artwork looks faded.
0:06- in this clip the girl is now by herself sitting in a dining room, she seems stressed and tired based on the facial expression she is making. She is sitting there placing what I’m assuming are her fathers supplements into pill containers so that he takes all the right pills on the right days. This is a night and morning pill container which means this man is on a strict schedule and needs these pills at those times to function.
All of the sorting through the pills though draws your attention right to her hands where you can see her wedding band. The wedding band there shows that she’s missing time home with her loved one to take care of her father. Hence why she is so overwhelmed and tired.
0:07- this frame quickly switches to a close up of her face where she quickly turns her ahead in alert to something. Whatever is happening off the left of the screen we know is not alarming based on her face. It’s not the old man because she seems calm in the situation just based on her facial expression.
This could have been a knock on the door or maybe another phone call. As well as it could have just been a noise the house made that didn’t sound familiar.
0:08- 0:09- in these clips you see the girl helping to dress her father and make him look presentable in a bedroom. Over the past few clips you notice now that her clothes have been changing meaning she is here everyday to help her father.
Even more in this clip than others he is positioned in a way that really emphasizes how sick and thin he is. He is turned just enough to show him from the side and also from the front. In this clip she also tugs along the arms of the shirt which show how much extra fabric is just folding over because it’s too big for him now.
Also noted this bedroom has very old curtains that have these palm leaves and pink flowers.
0:10- in this clip you see the girl sitting at the dining room table and the camera is not facing the table but shows just enough of the table and the living room to show both the man and the woman in the frame. The old man is sitting on the couch with the remote in his hand turning up the tv because he can’t hear it. But the woman sitting at the table is on her laptop
0:11- this clip is showing the same image but now you can see the girl slightly turn her head in shock that it is so loud when she is doing work. She does not completely look back at him showing me that she is frustrated but she doesn’t want to take it out on him so she stops herself half way.
0:12- The camera zooms in on the woman showing her aggressively blinking which shows her annoyance as she places her headphones on her ears. Her gaze is now focused upon her computer again and we assume she is resuming her work.
0:13- the young woman is now laying in the same bedroom that she was dressing ehr father in showing not only is she helping her dad but she is also staying there with him. You can tell it is the same room based on the curtains that were described before.
In bed she is on her phone and shaking her head. Based upon those actions you can feel how overwhelmed she is about taking care of her father.
0:14- 0:15- The camera moves back showing a more wide version of how she is laying down and a box appears on the screen as her fingers move on her phone in a typing motion words start to pop up in the box. Showing that the box is the search bar on her phone. As she types the words “Medicare tips” pops up in the box. This even more shows that she wants help and is struggling to do this all on her own.
We know she’s alone in doing this because of the lack of her mother figure as well as no one else is present in the video making it so you know it’s just her helping.
0:16- in frame 16 the frame starts focusing on a box of files that the woman is going through and then it pans up to her face to show her focus in looking for something like a document or such. There is also another box behind the one she is going through making it so that you see how much of this paperwork she is going through.
0:17- The frame continues to lift until it gives you a clear image of these boxes sitting on top of what looks to be a treadmill or some type of workout machine. They put this there to show that neither her or her father are working out or getting the exercise that they should be.
0:18- This clip switches to her sitting in what looks to be a home office based on the desk and desk lamp. She is sitting at the desk in front of a pile of boxes full of files. She has been going through these files because there is a stack of them on her desk. She looks overwhelmed based on the fact that she places her hands on her face.
0:19- the girl’s hand switch form covers her face to a position as if she was shielding her face from light, but she’s not. She is using this motion to show her frustration and she’s also using this position to lean against the table showing her exhaustion as well.
0:20- 0:21- The woman is looking out the window at what looks to be a beautiful day out and she still looks sad. This shows she’s having a hard time enjoying things now. The motion of the camera also moves around her while she is all alone, symbolizing how alone she’s feeling. This scene could also be her looking outside symbolizing her looking for clarity and help. This could also symbolize her feeling trapped there and like she can’t enjoy the outside
0:22- in this frame the old man is sitting in his chair reading a book when the girl who previously was somber, runs to him with a tablet in her hand. She then gets down on her knees to be level with him and starts to show something that’s on the tablet
0:23-0:24- this clip is zoomed in on their faces as she gives him the tablet. They zoom in because for the first time since clip one we see the woman smile. Her pure joy in this scene is shown through that and the way she has her arms up around him. The old man is smiling too because of how happy the woman is.
0:25-0:26- we see the woman planting a pot outside as the words aarp.org/caregiving show up on the screen. We can only see her hands but we know it’s her based off of the plaid shirt she is wearing. From this we can tell that the woman used this resource and has now found a way to make sure her father is taken care of without all the stress
0:27-0:30- the frame is moved from just her hands planting the pot to her face where you can see how happy and relieved she is to be doing something that is bringing her joy. The tips she used when looking them up in bed worked and she can now relax and do things. This ad was meant to promote and show how much stress is put upon caregiving and that with just using their website she was to not feel trapped inside and was able to go outside and do things that she wanted too.
0:00 – Shows two parents leaving their house with a bunch of care items for their children as they go into their car.
0:03 – The camera does a zoom in on the mom’s face and shows that she is leaving the house with confidence and swagger as she holds her son and drinks in her hand.
0:04 – The camera zooms out and shows the dad holding a stroller and some toys, while looking down giving his daughter a command. And the mom looks like she doesn’t have a care in the world while holding their son and the drinks.
0:05 – Camera zooms in on the little girl holding of the toys her dad is carrying and looks like she is either trying to keep up with him or trying to guide him somewhere.
0:06 – The camera is still zoomed in on the daughter and looks like she is pulling the toy in order to guide her dad somewhere. The camera zooms out showing the dad about to drop the stroller and everything in his hands. The mom starts to look more concerned whereas before she looks like she has the hang of things.
0:07 – The camera zooms in on mom looking concerned and frustrated.
0:08 – The camera zooms out showing both the mom and dad trying to readjust themselves so they can get in the car.
0:09 – The camera is now back on mom, and she looks more stressed and is losing the grip she has on her son. The camera is on both parents and now the dad is losing his grip on the stroller and toys.
0:11 – Shows the dad still dropping things, and still trying to eat a biscuit.
0: 13 – Shows the family and the dad is now behind the mom and looks like he is falling over because of all the stuff in his hands. The mom now has her son in her arm with the drinks in the other hand and her daughter in front of her, while still looking stressed. The camera zooms in on the dads’ legs showing that he is dropping some of the kids toys on the ground.
0:15 – shows the daughter in front of both parents. The daughter has a huge smile on her face while her mother and father are in the background struggling to stand and walk with the items in their hand. Now all of them make it to the van, the mom puts her drinks on the roof of the van. And the dad follows behind her. The daughter is by the door and drops the toy that is in her hand.
0:18 – The mom and dad are now putting the kids into the van. The mom has the son while the dad has the daughter.
0:20 – The camera shows the dad and the daughter. The dad is putting the seatbelt on his daughter’s car seat while she is smiling and eating dry cereal out of a bowl.
0:21 – The camera zooms in on the dad locking the seatbelt.
0:22 – Camera shows dad and daughter and she splashes the cereal in her dad’s face while being happy.
0:23 – Shows the mom putting her son in the car seat. The son is calmer than his sister.
0:24 – Camera zooms in on the mom fastening the seatbelt on her son.
0:25 – Shows it was an ad for the NHTSA.gov/The right seat.
In my opinion I believe the purpose was that you are never too busy to not buckle your seatbelt. The reason I say this is because they show a couple with two kids. Now both parent’s hands are full of their kids’ items. At first, they make the mom look like she has everything handled. And in a matter of seconds, it went from a stress-free trip to the car to a stressful one. After the daughter messed up the concentration of the dad the mom also started to mess up and they both were losing grip of the items in their hands. They also give you the idea that the dad hasn’t had that much time to eat as even though he is dropping stuff he is struggling to eat a biscuit. After they get to the van both parents make sure both kids are fastened safely in their seatbelt. And because they didn’t show the parents getting buckled up too, I believe that the company was showing parents to remember that their kids are buckled up..
0:00-0:03- In the opening shot of this advertisement, a middle aged woman with golden blonde hair is seen sitting on her couch in the living room, independently flipping through an old memory book. The living room is quite cozy looking, as the top of the fireplace mantle can be seen slightly behind the couch. The woman looks quite comfortable and content on the couch, with the memory book sitting on her lap. It seems as if she may be looking at baby photos of her son and a slight smile can be seen from the woman glaring at the pictures.
0:04- This shot is a closeup of one of the pictures in particular. The woman’s son, as a baby, is pictured slouched in the corner of a chair, resting his body up against the arm of the chair. The baby is so small that the pillows on this chair are almost as big as he is. The baby lay there with a full baby blue onesie on, with a black pair of sunglasses.
0:05- A second photo is observed, with the same zoom as the previous photo shown of the woman’s son. The watcher is almost looking through the mother’s eyes, experiencing her point of view of reminiscing on memories. The second photo is the boy who has grown up a little, I would say around 3 or 4 years old. He is pictured holding the steering wheel of a boat on a lake. The boy is experiencing the pure joy of childhood, the picture including the boy wearing a huge smile from ear to ear.
0:06-0:08- The journey of the boy growing up continues, this time picturing him with what appears to be his younger sister. The boy has grown up to about the age 9 or 10, and he is wearing a hat that has the words “finals” on it. It is cut off in the picture what team the hat would be from, but it definitely seems like a basketball hat.
0:08-0:10- The camera then zooms into the woman’s face as she continues to scroll through the book. She still seems to be happy and somewhat emotional looking through these pictures.
0:11- There is now a sudden change from the woman looking through the book on her couch, to what seems to be a classroom. However, this classroom has a dark feeling to it, much to do with there being no light on, and the chairs assembled in 3 rows in an arc are completely empty. It can be assumed that this is a music classroom with there being note logos placed throughout the classroom.
0:12- There is a separate angle of the empty classroom, this time taken from where the teacher would have been standing, in the center of the classroom. This angle faces the right side of the room’s students, that is, if there were any students. In the corner of the classroom is a white board with a music line.
0:13- another angle of the classroom is shown, this time showing the entirety of the empty chairs again.
0:14- The setting has now changed from a cut of the camera to a shot from the ground pointing up to the sign of a diner. The diner sign reads “One Man Band” in red letters and under it says “Diner” in blue lettering. In the back of the shot which is more significant however, is the American flag waving in the wind. Why has the camera panned from a living room, to an empty classroom, to a diner?
0:15-0:16- The question previously is answered with a connection. The woman from the beginning of the video, as the next shot shows the woman from the beginning of the video now is shown sitting in a booth of the diner near the window, alone. Her elbows are on the table while she looks out the window, almost with a concerned look on her face. Her hands are folded, which often indicates that someone is nervous.
0:17-0:18- The camera now zooms into the same woman’s face, and all we can see is her facial features with a blurred background. She is still just staring out the window with the same concerned look on her face. Why is the woman so concerned if she was just reminiscing on her son’s childhood photos? Has something possibly bad happened to her son?
0:19- A focused shot is set on the woman’s hands, in which she is fiddling with them. Her left thumb is rubbing against the top of her right thumb, something that a lot of people do when their nerves are high.
0:20-0:23- A man suddenly appears and slides into the booth seat across from the woman. Only the back of the woman’s head can be seen in this shot, so it is solely focused on the man. He enters the camera with a big smile on his face, seemingly trying to indicate a sense of comfort. The man is well dressed and seems well established while also wearing a respectable mustache.
0:24- Neither the man nor the woman’s faces can be seen in this shot, but what can be seen is the top of the table in the booth they are sitting in. The man grabs the woman’s hands to hold them, and they eventually lock hands. The woman seemed to have needed a sense of security or comfort. This action of the man grabbing her hands probably lifted a lot of weight off of the shoulders of her.
0:25- The camera cuts to a closeup of the woman’s face, back to having an ear to ear smile. The woman seems to have let out a little laugh. It is a quick transition from the woman looking extremely nervous and concerned whilst looking at the window, to the man coming into the booth and holding her hands, and finally to the woman laughing.
0:26-0:27- A final shot is seen of the woman and man still holding hands while having a conversation across from each other in the booth. There was no food on the table, so they did not go there to eat food, rather it seems they were there to talk about something important. What could they possibly be talking about? However, the shot also has a sentence over the conversation going on that states “In 30 states it’s illegal to fire, evict, or deny service to LGBT people”.
0:28-0:30- The woman and the man disappear, and a blank green screen appears with the phrase “Get the facts at BeyondIDo.Org”

0:01- A young, African American man stands at a bar. He is slightly turned around to face the camera/ viewer, holding a drink he presumably just purchased. He is facing two men (both wearing dark t-shirts and holding drinks) who are talking in the foreground of the frame, and are assumably the people he has come to the bar with. The bar is depicted in a hazy orangey-red light, and small glowing lanterns decorate the bar, as well as tea candles and a glowing strip of pale neon. Behind the bar itself, a nook in the wall holds what appears to be a decorative lantern, as well as a plant hanging from the ceiling beside it. Based upon the appearance of the bar, it is safe to assume this is no sports or dive bar, but instead perhaps a bar connected to a restaurant.
0:02- The young man, now centered in the frame between the two talking men in dark shirts, faces the camera. He is holding a whiskey glass filled with a dark liquid (presumably whiskey), and smiles while looking in the direction of the man on the right of the foreground.
0:03- The young man now looks down at the glass in his hand, no longer smiling.
0:04- The scene has now abruptly changed. The camera now focuses on a dazed looking young blond man standing in a backyard during what appears to be a spring or summer barbecue. He is holding a red solo cup, and is facing a man in a blue shirt, who stands, back to the camera, tending to a grill. A woman slightly obscures the young man as the walks across the frame, holding a white disposable paper plate. To the left of the man, a blond woman is sat on a bench at an umbrella-covered patio table, talking with a grey-haired man and a brunette woman, who are both standing with their backs facing the viewer/ camera. On the table there are stacks of unused red solo cups, plates with half eaten food, cups of disposable plastic utensils, and even solo cups that are currently in use.
0:05- The woman holding the disposable plate has slightly moved, and we can see that the young man stands next to the grille, on the side of which has hotdog buns and a bottle of ketchup and mustard.
0:06- The young man, in a similar fashion to the first man, looks down into the contents of his cup.
0:07- The scene changes again. The viewer now sees a man in a red and white baseball tee and jeans, holding a blue plastic cup and sitting on the tailgate of a truck. He smiles at a woman with braided ginger hair, who’s back faces the viewer. A young asian woman, leaning against the side of the truck, faces the ginger woman as well, laughing and holding a clear plastic cup. Behind the ginger woman, a plastic folding table stands open with a bottle of wine, a case of beer, a plate of watermelon, a bowl of barbecue potato chips, and an almost finished clear plastic cup. On the right side of the truck, another table has been set up, this one with a roll of paper towels and what seems to be an open beer bottle. Near that table, a young man and woman are engaged in what seems to be a lively conversation, with the young man gesturing at something with one hand, as his other hand holds an orange cup.
0:08- The young asian woman has turned to face the young man sitting on the tailgate of the truck, and the ginger woman has slightly turned her head towards his direction as well.
0:09- The scene has once again changed back to that of the young black man in the bar, who’s head is tilted downwards. His face is contorted in an expression of what seems to be pain or confusion as he now leans back against the bar counter.
0:10- The young man, head still down with a confused expression, reaches his free hand down into his pocket.
0:11- The scene changes to the young man at the backyard barbecue, who now is without a drink. He too is looking downward with both hands in the pockets of his flannel shirt.
0:12- The young man, having found what he was looking for, tilts his head up slightly. In the palm of his left hand, he holds his keys, while his right hand remains in his pocket.
0:13- The scene again changes to the tailgating man in the red and white shirt. He looks up, squinting, with one hand open, seemingly ready to catch something that is being thrown at him from somewhere off camera
0:14- The man has caught the object being tossed to him. He looks down into his hand in which, he too, holds his keys.
0:15- The scene changes back to the young man at the bar, who is still looking at his keys, but now appears to be deep in thought.
0:16- The young man clenches his hand around the key, looking up and past the camera determinedly at something.
0:17- The young man lowers his hand, and now is looking at something past the camera to his left.
0:18- The scene has changed to the young blond man at the backyard barbecue, who is also looking wistfully at something past the camera to his right.
0:19- The video now shows us the keys in the hand of the first young man. His palm is open and illuminated by a hazy golden light, which could be a clever staging trick, but could also be interpreted as light from the bar setting that he is in.
0:20- At this moment, the scene changes to a hand slipping a blue key being placed into the pocket of a backpack. Based upon the greenery of the background in this scene, it is safe to assume that the hand, key, and backpack all belong to the second young man at the backyard barbecue.
0:21- The scene changes to the man at the tailgate, who’s hand is now in motion once again. He looks off camera at something as a blur of motion leaves his hand. From this still, the viewer can infer that he has tossed the keys back to the individual who first tossed them to him.
0:22- The man in the red and white shirt can now be seen from an outside view sitting in the back seat of a black truck. His window is open, and he is looking down and to his right, presumably to find and put on his seat belt.
0:23- The man in the truck has now is reaching his hand up and pulled his seatbelt across his chest. Across the screen in a white text the words “PLAN AHEAD. CATCH A RIDE SOBER.” appear
0:24-0:29- The same words stay on the screen until the 0:26 mark, during which they change to say “BUZZED DRIVING IS DRUNK DRIVING”. This change occurs as the man fully buckles himself into his seat.
I prefer David or Dave, but students uncomfortable with first names can call me Professor or Mister Hodges. (Sir Dave and Dave-a-lot are popular alternatives.) My ESL students' charming solution, Mister David, is my favorite by far.
