Opposition to San Diego’s public transport has long been argued by legislator’s, mostly conservatives in congress. As seen in Fox News’ opinion piece, large news sources desperately try to tear down public transport with the argument that the government is abusing it’s power to alter public behavior. Foxes’ effort is aligned with a trend among public transports detractors: to routinely underfund the asset, to then use it’s indigence against it, which some news outlets still report as if it’s current. Legislators argue that fees will impact low-income drivers the most, while it would be mostly to low-income drivers’ benefit to swap cars for light rail or trolleys, and to everyones benefit to get their cars off the cities highways. The opposition makes no claims about the projects actual goals. Compare San Diego’s low ridership to San Francisco’s 30%, or even Los Angeles’ 6%! Despite the worries that the government is trying to change the publics behavior, it should be remembered that the public overwhelmingly support mass transportation. If it’s budget is slashed to operate as a last resort for people for people who can’t afford cars, thats who will ride it. The bottom line is, maintaining and owning cars is becoming more expensive regardless of whose in office.

Motivation and the Batlle Within

A person can find an outlet in their personal life that motivates them to try new things or better themselves as individuals. Their personalities can reflect the goals a person wants to achieve and their willingness to achieve these goals. In a person’s life they may face social challenges and external pressures and it’s important for an individual to not use these aspects in life as your motivation. Motivation should come from within and shouldn’t be affected by negative outside factors such as comments made to put down others or social norms that someone may not be able to meet. You are yourself and you should focus on what you want for yourself and not let other people’s words affect your motivation. To effectively use motivation an individual must understand themselves and personality to find an outlet of motivation rather than using external factors instead.

It is obvious that as humans we are all different in many ways from physical characteristics, to different ideologies and beliefs. Author Phillip J. Core wrote the article, “Motivation and Personality: A Neuropsychological Perspective.” In this article when discussing people’s personalities the author states, “People differ from one another, and this fact is obvious to everyone. It is common to talk about people’s personalities using lexical terms to describe their characteristic ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.” It is important for an individual to reflect upon their personal self and not to be jealous or listen to harmful words from others that may make you want to change who you are. When you change your values to make others agree with them you are not being true to yourself which is something you shouldn’t be motivated to do. Motivation should come from within and reflect your personal values rather than follow other peoples and societies ideas of what you should be.

What opposes a person’s intrinsic motivation, motivation that comes from within a person, is extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is motivation that is affected by external factors. Author Natalie Regoli wrote an article listing the advantages and disadvantages of using extrinsic motivation in a person’s life. In the article some advantages she listed were individual benefits, creating a desire to chase dreams or goals, and it can increase productivity within people. When we look at the advantages they may seem justifiable and ideal points to consider such as a person struggling to find motivation to get employed. A person who is experiencing this struggle in life may be affected by the desire to want to own a home or car, so they will continue to search for employment so one day they will achieve their goal. External factors can put pressure on individuals to make them have the feeling of not being good enough for society or not meeting expectations that people want you to uphold. Regoli lists disadvantages for extrinsic motivation that involve the value of external rewards, repressing intrinsic motivation, following a course of diminishing returns, lack of passion, and creating unrealistic expectations. When being presented with the opportunity to achieve something or be rewarded outside of your values there are some questions you must ask yourself before pursuing. You must look into the value of the reward and how it made you feel as an individual after. Regoli best describes this when she states, “If you are striving for things that involve money or possessions, then these items are fleeting. It is the memories that you make with your families and friends that become the most-prized elements of life as the years go.” Memories and experiences are what make you as an individual and by focusing on assets outside of these experiences you may miss out on key moments in your life. Another disadvantage of extrinsic motivation is the repression of intrinsic motivation that extrinsic creates. If an individual is driven to pursue a career where they are just earning a paycheck and have no real care about the career, they may feel as if the career’s current rewards are worth the sacrifice. By not caring about your own thoughts and just doing something for the money, wouldn’t this be an example of going against your intrinsic values? Sure everyone is their own person so their personalities may make them want to chase careers for money rather than passionate value, but by pursuing something like this may cause your intrinsic motivation to decline. This can also create diminishing returns and unrealistic expectations you may have. By repeating a cycle and gaining the same reward every time, overtime you may find yourself with an outcome lower than your expectations this how extrinsic motivation creates diminishing returns. Instead of this you should look for something that will change in a way that suits your values and what you want as an individual. Extrinsic motivation can also present opportunities with outcomes that may seem rewarding, but in fact end with unrealistic outcomes. You must see the value in what you’re motivated to do and see what the path has to offer and if it is worth giving time and energy. When a person becomes motivated to achieve a goal it is important that they do not fall for any external forces pressuring them into doing something and instead look within and use intrinsic motivation to complete goals.

To effectively use motivation an individual must understand themselves and personality to find an outlet of motivation rather than using external factors instead.

By using their core values a person can create a mentality to change themselves by working to achieve greatness. A person shouldn’t be controlled by outside factors such as other people’s judgment on themselves. External factors can affect your mindset and hide what you truly desire with false outcomes that will lead you to nothing. It may be harder for an individual who only listens to what other people have to say rather than an individual who uses self motivation to become successful in their dreams. You must see value in what you’re working for and if it reflects your personality and beliefs.

Highway Robbery: San Diegos Public Transport Plan

As car prices and highway upkeep costs skyrocket in price, public transport options are gaining traction. Opposition to public transport has long been argued by legislators, mostly conservatives in congress. They hold the belief that public transport is too costly to maintain, and serves very few people. Despite this, public transport is highly favored by the American public, as seen in a study conducted by YouGov. “66 percent of voters believe their own communities would benefit from expanding public transit while about 77 percent of voters believe the US overall would benefit from expanding public transit.” As such, there aren’t many articles or studies that detract public transport, at least without offering suggestions to better implement it.

However, there do exist some large news sources that desperately try to tear down public transport, as seen in Fox News’ opinion piece, “San Diego wants to tax people out of their cars and into public transportation.” It covers SANDAG’s (or San Diego County’s Regional Driving Agency) new taxes that will fund their $165 billion plan to expand San Diego’s public transit system over the next 30 years. The article raises 3 main concerns: First, the tax will hit low-income earners the hardest. Second, the government is abusing it’s power to alter public behavior. Finally, this issue is at risk of spreading to other cities around the country. This article ultimately falls flat when it overexaggerates the plans simplicity to make it seem more imposing. This is aligned with a trend among public transports detractors: to routinely underfund the asset, to then use its indigence against it.

The article begins by stating SANDAG’s plan will impose a mileage tax costing drivers 4¢ for every mile driven, new tolls placement on 800 miles of highways, and adding an additional 1.5% to the counties sales tax. Fox criticizes these for disproportionately affecting lower income workers. However many of the assertions they make about these taxes have been groomed to seem more intimidating than they actually are. The mileage tax, the most controversial of the costs, was removed from the plan months prior to this article due to its unpopularity. Many are still concerned about the tax, and rightly so seeing as some news outlets are still reporting on it as if it’s current. Additionally, the expansion of toll highways is brushed over, and ultimately is oversimplified. Tolls will be applied to solo drivers in the I-15 express lane and SR 125, which was already a toll road. They do not need to be paid by carpoolers, public transport passengers, tour vans, electric cars, hybrid cars, veterans (on SR 125 only) and even motorcycles. Carpooling has long been utilized for lower income workers, and as an MIT study found, is much more common for people in lower income levels. Ultimately, the only fee that has a real chance of disproportionately affecting low-income earners is the sales tax increase. However, that alone won’t result in the government, “taxing us into fixed-rail trains and buses.”

Interestingly, the article uses a populist argument against public transit, claiming the fees will impact low-income drivers the most. However what it leaves out, is how it will benefit the low-income residents who are dependant on public transit. Given San Diego’s staggeringly low public service ridership of under 3%, it is likely the people who utilize the service are those who have no other options for transportation.

Fox News however, is not actually interested in protecting the needs of low-income earners, and we see this in their attempt to demonize the public service. It completely negates the necessity for the project, and the taxes are presented as if the tax revenue is just being buried in the ground. It doesn’t actually make any claims about the projects contents itself, positive or negative. The whole idea is thrown out based on the price, opting to rather urge the government to push for the vague goal of, “technology and innovation.”

The aim of the public transit project is obviously to give more people other transportation options, however the article uses a static statistic to frame the project as a widespread tax for something only a handful of people use. “It’s a bait and switch — freeway dollars, gas tax dollars, and registration fees promised for road improvements instead pay for costly public mass transit projects that less than 3% of the public uses.” This statistic actually makes a decent case for better public transport in San Diego, showing how absurdly low the ridership amount it. Compare this to San Francisco’s 30% number, or even Los Angeles’ 6%, and San Diego’s < 3% highlights how much the city really needs it.

To accurately measure the possible success of a new public transit system for San Diego, it should be compared to a similar city, Los Angeles. Both cities started as sprawled out, low density developments. In the 1990s, Los Angeles’ government began rethinking their transport strategy and invested in public transport, as well as walkable infrastructure. Cityscape, a journal published by the U.S Department of Housing Urban Development, found that both economic activity and land values increase in areas with higher access to public transport. This is in agreement SANDAG’s plan, as much of the project is dedicated to ridesharing services to get people to public transport.

Despite the worries that the government is trying to change the publics behavior, it should me remembered that in order for these changes to be implemented, the municipal government needs a voting majority to usher them in. Ultimately, if public transport is treated as a service for the poor, it will operate as a service for the poor. If it’s budget is slashed to operate as a last resort for people for people who can’t afford cars, thats who will ride it. It will be inconvenient, it will come off as dangerous, it will alienate most of the public. The bottom line is, maintaining and owning cars is becoming more expensive regardless of whose in office. Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and if we don’t curb our dependance on them, we won’t have the money down the line to pay for a new transport system.

Can Crosswords Puzzles Truly Be Harmful
To A Victim of An Eating Disorder?

In society, every game has some effect on those who use the game constantly, whether these games are beneficial or detrimental to the individual’s brain is debatable. Critics may argue that crossword puzzles provide more anxiety, frustration, and lack of productivity to victims of eating disorders however these folks fail to recognize the motivation, cognitive skills, and self-regulating strategies that these mental games supply to these individuals. Additionally, if they bother to be aware of the many studies on mental games, they would acknowledge that mental games like crossword puzzles have assisted individuals more in easing their mental state rather than causing distress. They focus more on the possible short-term damage crosswords puzzle have on certain individuals’ brains instead of viewing the benefits it could also have on these victims’ mental states both in the long term and short term.

A person picks up a crossword puzzle and sits on the couch for hours to immerse in this puzzle, trying to figure out the next possible word that they got distracted from doing their tasks of the day to complete the crossword puzzle. In retrospect this might seem like a major problem for individuals if they are trying to be productive for the day however for victims of eating disorders, this can be quite helpful in distracting them from having the urge to binge on food from the kitchen. Victims of eating disorders are in a constant battle with their brains on consuming food that it is already difficult enough for them to get tasks done without their brains being filled with negative thoughts about their weight. Crossword puzzles can distract individuals from their daily responsibilities however this distraction works in the favor of those with an eating disorder since they can shift their focus on the crossword puzzle in front of them instead of their negative thoughts. Of course, this doesn’t change the fact that these folks will still have responsibilities to do after they are done with the crossword puzzle but an easy fix to this problem would be setting a schedule to place in a time to do this puzzle or doing the puzzle in the evening or night once the majority of their tasks are done. This way not only will they not have to worry about their responsibilities afterward but they get to reward themselves with a stress relieving treat to ease their brain for the night.

It could also be said by commentators that these puzzles are time-consuming to the individual leading to one’s frustration when trying to complete the puzzle. Although it states in Predictors of crossword puzzle proficiency and Moderators of age–cognition relations that the failure to solve words items from a crossword puzzle could be due to the solver’s lack of knowledge necessary to identify its target or just the use of ineffective strategies to retrieve information from memory, one can argue that overtime these cognitive skills can be strengthened if crossword puzzle is used constantly through their day to day life. As a means to not get the individual completely immersed or frustrated towards the crossword, one can set a timer or stop once they are stuck on a word for too long. Another solution for this is having a dictionary or reference on the side nearby in case the solver is stuck on a word. In the article, Crossword Puzzles: Adjunct clinical teaching strategy writers claim that if these crossword puzzles are being used as a way to obtain knowledge on a subject then it’s hard to find already made puzzles for the individual or it can take way too long to make puzzle on your own. While both of these reasons are justifiable, a quick fix can be applied to these issues. An alter solution could be using an online public website or app to construct your puzzle in less than 15 minutes. This way it could be used as a reinforcement of strategies that could be used by the victims of eating disorders.

The solver is given unnecessary anxiety. Games as an Innovative Teaching Strategy for Overactive Bladder And BPH, an article written by LeCroy Cheryl insist that one of the biggest disadvantages of crosswords puzzle is that these puzzles can “become threatening or too stressful” on the solver. It was mentioned that the possible space constraints and increase time spent on a single word can cause the solver to fill distress or anxiety. While all of these points can be acknowledged, it could also be said that a way around this can be that the solver can take a break from the crossword puzzle and come back to the puzzle later. In this way as well, the individual is practicing a self-regulating strategy by knowing when to put the puzzle down when it gets too stressful for them. It’s a good way to practice the solver’s cognitive skills. Apart from being a self-regulating strategy, the crossword puzzler can reinforce their reasoning abilities since there tend to be a lot of misleading clues in these puzzles. Over time the solver may acquire the ability to work within multiple constraints forced by the puzzle’s grid without causing unnecessary anxiety. Later this can boost the solver’s motivation to continue the crossword puzzle.

No game is perfect, whether it be mind games or just regular games. Games will always have some kind of effect on the individual. In any case, they can favorable or damaging to victims of eating disorders and can have a short or long impactful effect on them as well. Although it is easy to claim that these crossword puzzles can lead to anxiety, frustration, and a lack of productivity for the solver when examine more closely individuals can find these puzzles to be motivating and assist in improving their cognitive skills and self-regulating strategies. These skills and strategies can help individuals with eating disorders exercise healthy strategies and provide a positive mood for that individual as well. Crossword puzzles can be more of help than one thinks.

Musical Rebuttal

Music is everywhere in our lives, and many people listen to it. Many people love to listen to music and even play music sometimes if they are musicians. People use music all the time when doing everyday things like studying, working, relaxing, dancing, and many other things. It is something that is used all the time, and often times, it is viewed as a great thing. Many people see it as a great thing because they say that it can reduce a lot of anxiety and depression. They also say that music can also improve your overall mood. However, it has been proven that music actually does the exact opposite. Music can actually decrease and ruin people’s overall health, especially in the physical, mental, and emotional areas of your health.

The digression of people’s health when listening to music is very apparent when we look in the mental health area, specifically, when we look at people with depression. Most people will say that music is a perfect coping mechanism and treatment for people with anxiety and depression. They say that music tends to calm down stress hormones, which in cause helps people relax a lot. When people relax, anxiety is reduced down by a whole lot, and since anxiety is down, depression, as a result, will also be reduced. However, as counterintuitive as this will sound, music is actually a terrible coping mechanism and treatment for people with anxiety and depression because by having them listen to music, this will do the exact opposite for them. Depression will actually increase and anxiety will also increase for them, and by both of those things increasing, their overall mood will also deteriorate as a result. This sounds very counterintuitive, but you have to think about it. When people have depression and/or anxiety, they feel really sad and really stressed out. When those people are feeling those kinds of feelings and emotions, they don’t want anything else and it is difficult for them to feel anything else. When we have them listen to music, they will most likely pick music that sounds sad or depressing, and if the songs are not instrumentals, they will most likely have sad lyrics in the songs. In turn, their depression and/or anxiety is not really going away. Instead, the music is actually acting as an additional stressor and as a result, their overall health is not getting better, but it is actually getting worse. By giving these people the ability to listen to music as a treatment or a coping mechanism, they are not getting the proper help that they need. They need to find something else as a good treatment or coping mechanism for their depression and/or anxiety such as being active or socializing with other people for example.

Music can also affect you physically as well, especially to the ears. There are two ways that people love to listen to music. It is by either going to loud concerts or by listening to music using earbuds or headphones. Our ears can only but handle so much music at a loud volume, and sometimes, if we listen to music in these kind of ways for a long time, we can sometimes experience hearing loss. This is especially true today towards the younger generations as many young children these days require headphones for school work, and often times, they listen to lots of music while working. Young teenagers also go to lots of concerts put on by many famous musicians and singers, and with amplification and technology these days, concerts keep getting louder and louder, and that can be damaging to the ear sometimes. The problem is that younger children’s ears are still developing when they are young, even until their teenage years. They can’t handle so much loud music or music with headphones for a long period of time, and yet, due to certain circumstances, they go through with that.

Sometimes, music can be harmful and affect those in their emotional health, especially those who went through traumatic experiences. Music is a really powerful tool that can sometimes unlock memories or even remind you of memories in the past. It can sometimes be reflective and either bring back good memories or bad memories. According to an article from “Psychology Today”, there was a man who really loves music, and he listens to music all the time. However, he had recently lost his wife, and he said that he can no longer listen to and enjoy music anymore because all the music that he loves to listen to remind him of his wife. The memories reminded through the music really affect the man negatively and he can no longer enjoy music. Unfortunately, he is not the only one, and there are many people that have been emotionally haunted by music because of past experiences or former memories. Music can emotionally haunt people simply by being sad or slow and having a message or having some certain lyrics that remind people of past memories like a loved one or a traumatic experience like an illness or an accident. Sometimes, this can even increase stress, and as a result, increase anxiety as well.

When you consider the evidence and the facts, it is easy to see that even though many people see music as a wonderful tool to help improve people’s overall health, it is clear that instead of improving people’s overall health, music actually declines people’s overall health. Music declines people’s physical health, mental health, and emotional health. It can cause anxiety to skyrocket really high as well as hearing loss for younger folks. Depression can also be increased really high because of music’s overall ability to add stressors to people’s lives and cause them to feel really sad. Music can also bring unwanted memories to those who are feeling really sad or traumatized, especially to those who have went through major experiences or have lost loved ones. Music is definitely a terrible way to increase overall health, and people need to listen.

The Danger of Music

Police in Schools

School shootings are becoming more and more common every year. This happens so much that our schools have drills for the students to do in case a shooting takes place, but by then it’s too late for anyone. The reality is that the students are hoping that the shooter doesn’t come to their room. But if the schools had trained officers with guns to defend the students during times like this I believe that we would cut school shooting down close to zero. Too many kids and teens have died due to these school shooting events, and the worst part is the shooter doesn’t even need a reason to do what they do. So imagine you are in a school with no protection and a shooting occurs. And you can hear the shooter getting closer and closer, outside your classroom students are getting shot. Kids and teachers hope they are not next on the shooter’s list. This is the brutal reality of what a student’s final moments can look like when a school shooting occurs. But don’t just take it from me here are some survivors of school shootings describing that moment.(Miah Cerrillo: 11-year-old school shooting survivor called 911, smeared blood on herself, played dead | CNN)|Florida school shooting: A survivor’s story – BBC News|(10 Survivors Of School Gun Violence Share How It Still Reverberates Through Their Lives | HuffPost Life). After I read these news reports I am convinced that schools need to have trained armed police guards in their schools. Even when police do arrive on the scene of a school shooting they don’t just rush into the building with guns and hope to find the shooter, and it makes sense because they have to come up with a strategy to stop the shooter. But while the police are planning how to get inside safely, unarmed teachers and students are trapped in the school waiting for someone to save them and praying that the shooter doesn’t get to them first.

As a former high schooler, we have drills if someone comes into the school, but the drill is heavily flawed. If you train the students on where to go if a shooting takes place you are possibly teaching the shooter how to find everyone. Plus most of the time they will just close the door and try to pretend that they are not in the classroom at that time, which is also a flawed concept. Because the attacker already knows that students are in school during that time of day, not to mention if it’s a student themselves who is the attacker. For example, the Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz, who was a former student at Parkland knew the landscape of the school and where students and teachers would likely be. Schools need to get rid of this drill because it doesn’t help anyone and all it does is leave people waiting to get slaughtered. So how will police make schools a safe place for students and teachers?

Trained police officers will always be available and in action, if something occurs. This will already give a shooter something to think about if he plans on shooting a school. And we can give them dogs trained to detect illegal things that students may carry in their bags. Metal detectors will also need to be in place to detect guns, knives, and any other harmful products. Remember this new system is not a guaranteed foolproof system, there will always be new problems but hopefully, this will stop school shootings. This will also help the new generation not fear the police as much and the same thing for the police. Police officers in schools will also play an important role in maintaining order and discipline on the school campus. In instances where students violate school policies, rules, or regulations, police officers are tasked to enforce the law. That is, when students engage in criminal activities, police officers are called upon to handle the situation. Therefore, when students know that police officers are present, they are aware that there are consequences for their actions, and they are more likely to comply with school policies and regulations. Because the world is a dangerous place and even though parents want to keep their children from danger, it may come pounding on their doorstep. And as Americans, we can’t keep schools unprotected, at any moment a crazy gunman can walk in and take out everybody, not just kids. It is our job as a community and as a country to protect our youth, and their bright ideas for the future.

Rebuttal – PitandThePendulum

I could use some help establishing a proper argument, Professor. I have a basic idea of how I want to start ( ie: Amazon and other online shopping platforms did not cause bookstores to close, rather their subsequent decline was caused by growing social media trends, environmental conditions, etc). However, I feel like that evidence might not be specific enough or might veer off of the main topic I want to present. Additionally, most of the articles I find do acknowledge how Amazon had a large part to play in the decimation of independently run brick and mortar establishments, so its hard for me to find good evidence to create a counterargument.

“The REAL Reason for the Independent Bookstore’s Demise”

As the independent bookshop begins its gradual return into the world of retail, Amazon still remains to be the scapegoat for the industry’s gradual collapse. That, however, is an incredibly oversimplified assessment of an issue that stems not only in the economic world, but in the social and psychological sphere as well. The rise of social media giants and their subsequent impact on the attention span, coupled with the pandemic and the economic crisis that followed it, can be factored in as a few alternate reasons for the collapse of the small book business.

In the case of the downfall of small book businesses, one needs to look no further than social media. It comes as no surprise that as social media began to grow, the number of readers began to shrink. As new social media apps began to surface, such as Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, etc, the world began to turn away from pages and towards screens. Research conducted amongst senior high school students at San Diego State University showed that 60% of seniors reported reading as a hobby in the 1970s. The same study was conducted again in 2016, and the results showed that only 16% of students reported doing so. Overall, it was estimated that only 1 in 3 students in the U.S engage in leisurely reading. Online ‘e-readers’ (those who indulge in online articles that do not qualify as e-books) can be found on hundreds of sites and apps that boast engaging, short-content that can be accessed either on mobile devices or computers (some of these sites include Reddit, The Washington Post, and other sites rife with content). A study conducted by the Wall Street Journal suggests that part of the reason engagement in attention-consuming activities like reading has gone down is due to society’s need for instant gratification.

As of 2021, 34% of American small businesses are still closed as a result of COVID. With approximately 99.9% of small businesses in America identifying as small businesses, and occupying 47.3% of the country’s private workforce, the loss of these businesses have threatened not only the nation’s economy, but the financial stability of many American citizens. Small bookstores make up only a small amount of businesses effected by the pandemic and its subsequent lockdown, and while Indie bookstores have begun to utilize social media in order to boost engagement and revenue, the effect of social media on the average user’s attention span has been drastic. As these stores try to boost their engagement, they can’t guarantee that their viewers will ever engage with them beyond one simple like over the internet.
