Wake up!

We have another election the first Tuesday in November. (Did you know most elections, including presidential elections, are held the first Tuesday in November?) And every time we hold an election for a legislative office such as the Senate or the House, we are reminded that legislators (at least the members of the party in charge) have the power to draw their own voting district maps.

  • Deadline Reminder
    • The middle of the semester comes knocking. And the consequences seem real and immediate. The White Paper that a few weeks ago was a vague pledge to “donate when I get my tax refund” is suddenly an overdue bill, and the Definition Argument is still pretty iffy, while the Rebuttal Argument certainly can’t be accomplished until my Hypothesis is nailed down to something like a firm Thesis that another author might want to refute.
    • About half of my students are usually ready for this drastic rise in the sea level. The other half feel as if they’re suddenly drowning.
    • Right on cue, students who aren’t ready to fully commit to their research miss a class, maybe two classes. They ignore emails and texts from their professor, figuring that he’s too busy to pester them more than once.
    • Once the deadlines for the Short Arguments are past, they no longer feel like a weight around the neck. It’s easy to let those delinquencies slide for a few days. A week. After 48 hours, they’re already worth no more than 50/100 points, so “what’s the point?”
    • For some, this slide is irreversible.
    • For the in-betweeners, interaction with the professor is something to dread. Coming to class late, leaving early, or sneaking out to avoid confrontation, seems like a reasonable survival technique.
    • I get it.
    • I too put things off.
    • I do them when I absolutely have to.
    • I do them poorly sometimes because I haven’t left myself enough time to do them well.
    • But I’m an idiot.
    • You don’t have to be.
    • The people I have to report to are reasonable people who gladly work with me when I acknowledge my thoughtless procrastination, my dread at confronting the problem.
    • If you have to be like me, be like that version. The guy who acknowledges he’s late and his work is not up to par and who’s committed to making it better.
    • Be the enlightened version of me.
    • Don’t miss classes. Don’t ignore my texts or emails. Don’t think you’re too late, or too far behind, or too confused to catch up, or too fill-in-the-blank.
    • IT’S THE HALFWAY POINT. (Well, to be honest, it’s past half way.)
    • You can turn this sucker around.
    • I will push you up that hill like nobody else who ever had your back.
    • But I won’t pull you up.
    • You have to take the first step.
    • If you haven’t posted your first Short Argument yet (Definition/Categorical), post it immediately, as soon as you can.
    • And if you’re not going to be ready to post your Causal Argument in two weeks, your Refutation Argument two weeks later, then post something that looks like a 1000-word Argument. Ask for very specific feedback. Get into the game. Pretend it’s essential to you. It might not feel like it right now, but I am your biggest supporter and fan. Until you let it slide.
    • Don’t. Let. It. Slide.
    • Very few of the 50% who start to fade at the middle of the term do well at the end of the course. Beat those odds. Right now.

    In class today, we first talked about how legislators or at least the members of the party in charge have the power to draw their own voting district maps. This is important because they can shape their voting district maps in favor of their party, and in disfavor of the other. You can create advantages for your party where there are no advantages through Gerrymandering. We then reviewed visual rhetoric regarding watching a video. You are describing the images to a reader who can’t see what you’re describing. It should also indicate whether the technique (the rhetorical part of the visual argument) is effective or not. We analyzed a short video selling Thai life insurance and discussed what should be included in the Visual Rhetoric Rewrite. We also analyzed a short video regarding fatherhood involvement. We then took care of some housekeeping regarding the second half of the semester and the importance of keeping on track with deadlines. Lastly, we went over our Safer Saws Task.

    Notes 10/21/2021

    Gerrymandering: manipulating the electoral map to favor one class or party.
    – Started with 50 people (Trying to give advantage to one of the parties)
    – Weighted voting (Gives a chance to show how much the people care for a particular candidate)
    Should be done in primary’s

    Visual Rhetoric
    – your reader DOES NOT get to watch the video
    – (Meant to be a reminder that your reader does not get to read your source material)
    – Most writers assume that the readers know what they are trying to put across, but the reader does not have a clue. (Because the writer never clearly explained.)
    – “You are describing the images to a reader who cannot see what you are describing.”
    – Evaluate the image(Do not say that she does not have money – explain why) (She turns out her pockets – which indicates that there is no money)

    Advice for a rewrite to your visual rhetoric
    – Add more detail
    – Concentrate on the rhetoric half
    – Make sure to provide enough details for the readers to understand (So they can draw a picture without seeing the video)
    – (Post what you believe the interpretation of the video was supposed to be)
    – Why you are looking at that? What are you looking at? If the video could have been better visualized.

    – Single activity/task can be been from a variety of perspectives
    -About 10,000 people get amputated by a table saw each year, and about 40,000 people end up in the emergency room

    -Visual Rhetoric, if you don’t tell the reader what’s going on they won’t be able to see it. It’s a reminder that the readers don’t read your source materials.
    -you said the person is poor, but you also need to describe what you read at the time to explain how the person is poor.
    -You cant say she has no money, you have to say she turned her empty pockets to indicate she has no money.

    If you don’t tell the reader what is going on they wouldn’t understand what is going on
    Have to describe what you are seeing, draw a conclusion from what you are seeing, explain why the director chose that person for the role
    Provide enough detail to the rhetoric so your reader understands what is going on
    The most common advice I offer to your classmates for rewriting their Visual Analysis posts is to add more detail.
    The most common advice I offer after that is to concentrate on the Rhetoric half of the Visual/Rhetoric assignment.
    Posts should provide enough detail so that the reader not only visualizes the basics of the setting and the action but can also understand how the details impose interpretations on the viewers.
    Posts should include what you, the author, believe to be the interpretation the editor of the video wants to impose on us.

    Gerrymandering
    -The way state or counties are mapped out can have a major affect on voting and our democracy.
    -Those in power refuse to get. rid of it because it helps them. stay in power.

    Visual Rhetoric
    -reader doesn’t get to watch a video in order to help your analysis.
    -You have to realize there are no pictures to help you explain
    -Describing an image or video without any other context clues can help to thoroughly break down details and why the author included certain details.
    -theres a lot more to take away from even a 30 second video than you would think

    Deadline. Reminder
    -semester is getting closer to. end
    -students who aren’t fully committed end up falling further. and further behind and lack focus and communication.
    -Putting things off is natural, but it needs to be done in order to stay ahead and be successful in any course

    Visual Rhetoric
    Even if you think you’ve utilized enough information, keep in mind that the reader hasn’t “seen the movie.”
    Express the editor’s perspective, making careful to clarify what the film is displaying and what inferences you may draw based on each and every action.
    Consider describing the camera perspective if it is different from the norm, and explain your own conclusion and opinion on the video.

    The legislators’ votes in each district are used to draw out the votes for candidate state governor from their own maps. The visual rhetoric is about describing the video from body posture and emotion rather than sound, so that the readers do not see it, but can imagine the scenario described and form their own opinion. The visual rhetoric must have enough visual detail for the analysis from a moral perspective as our own interpretation. Deadlines for each assignment must be met and completed based on everything you learn in class and the professor’s comments/advice rather than wasting time worrying about your grade in the class by being unresponsive to work. In addition to devoting time to the work, including research and rewriting essays. Each paragraph’s constituents contain quote claims that must be analyzed to determine what type they are and how they support the argument as a whole. You can either support the claims, or they must be questioned for their accuracy and logic.

    With gerrymandering one can draw maps to create an advantage of voters where an advantage originally exists. Gerrymandering creates a map of unfair districts to try and take the advantage in votes for their party. The maps are strategically drawn to promote whichever party is in power. In a visual rhetoric, you must describe what you’re seeing, how effectively the communicated their message, and how well the person they choose communicated their message. You are communicating to your reader what you are seeing when the reader cannot see it. The more details in the visual rhetoric the better and more effective it is. Details impose interpretations on the viewers. The visual rhetoric should include what you believe the interpretation the of the video is. In describing a 30 second video, there is way more to write then you think there is.

    -Today we discussed the voting system and how the results can be influenced and changed fairly easily

    In class today we started with a wake-up call about voting. It showed how democracy can easily be rigged and it’s not at all what we think it is. We went over the Thai life insurance commercial again and he explained why it never actually mentions the life insurance, because it’s just supposed to be a feel-good video and not an in your face ad to sell something. I think watching it with the music this time really made a difference and it made me more emotional.
    We went over the visual rhetoric assignment that’s due next Thursday.

    -focus on the rhetoric more than the visual aspects
    Ad council DanceLikeADad video. Disected the first frame of the video and picked out which parts were important to let the reader know. The camera angle was very important because it shows the child’s point of view. It just goes to show how everything is thought out and there are tiny details that make a huge difference.
    Housekeeping: Deadlines are coming so stay in contact with the professor and keep up to dat eon any work. There will be a lot of assignments and rewrites for those assignments in the upcoming weeks. Evaluating sources task: consider how different people might evaluate a source. The video we watched had to do with safer saws that stop when in contact with the electrical conductivity of a finger.

    What I learned in class today:
    – for visual rhetoric you must describe images and the connotation of the scene to help the reader understand what is being watched
    – it could be a chance that the message was not clear enough to get across
    – the readers are not watching the video, so you must be very very specific and include lots of details
    – Ad council on youtube is where we will find the videos (must be a 30 sec video)
    – going downhill on the semester now and must seek help if needed to complete the research paper
    – ask for help about hypothesis
    – Steve Gass manufactured a table saw that will not cut your finger off (found that very interesting)
    – safer saws task is due Monday night

    Wake Up
    We have an election coming up on the first Tuesday of November. We then promptly went over the voting system and how the party in charge during a census can somewhat rig the census (gerrymandering).
    Visual Rhetoric
    “The job of a visual rhetoric analysis is not just to describe a visual, but to determine/deconstruct/describe the sales pitch.” No matter what the video may be, you will be “sold” something, could be a construct or an inanimate object. The job as the analyst is to take out the passion of the video and describe what is being sold, simultaneously passing judgement on the video. Try to focus on the rhetoric half of the visual/rhetoric assignment a bit more than the visual. The analysis should provide enough detail so that the reader cannot only visualize what is going on, but understand what the video’s goals are and the assumed interpretations the audience should have. Focus on camera positioning during the analysis.
    Side note: {Ask yourself who needs it more.}

    Keep up on the deadlines, a snowball effect will certainly happen if awareness is lacking. Get on your issues and solve them.

    In today’s class, we talked about the rhetoric analyzer does not get to watch the video you are analyzing. We talked about how legislators or at least the members of the party in charge have the power to draw their own voting district maps. You are describing the images to a reader who can’t see what you’re describing. The reader will have no basis to evaluate your judgments unless you describe the visible components of the visual argument. In the evaluating sources task we talked about the constituents which are manufacturers, customers, industry spokespeople, consumer safety advocates, injured plaintiffs, personal injury lawyers, government officials, and news reporters.

    -View everything you watch with the knowledge that someone is trying to sell you something (not necessarily a product, but maybe a belief or mindset)
    -Figure out the intent of the video and look for the manipulation before it can affect you
    -The job of a visual rhetoric analysis is not just to describe the visual, but to determine and deconstruct the sales pitch within the video
    -These ads are about positive and uplifting social goals, yet they are still a sales pitch (selling you a mindset)

    Visual rhetoric can be used to subtly persuade people towards a certain point of view without even realizing it, and elements we hardly even think about, like camera angle, can play a major role in how that is done.

    The way that gerrymandering works make it so the minority wins elections if they have control over the districts and can make the majority have a more commanding lead if they control it. When watching the advertisement for life insurance, and you might have a different view of the ad whether or not you know it is an ad for life insurance beforehand. The sales pitch of the ad should be similar to our sales pitch of the visual rhetoric paper as we try to sell the readers on the points in our paper and see things from your side. One of the most common suggestions for the visual analysis assignment is to add more detail. Getting in work is more important than constantly missing deadlines as it gives something to talk about and work on instead of having nothing to show or edit to be better.

    -If someone has no money, what exactly are they showing/doing to indicate that?
    -We start drawing conclusions from the start, no waiting for evidence
    -There is more to do and write about than you think there is

    -If you’re missing deadlines, don’t give up immediately. Email and say what you’ve missed and try to post at least something to get feedback on
    -Things will start to pick up from here and you want to stay on top of things as much as possible

    View everything with the idea that you are being sold something, a point of view, a sociological construct
    The job of a visual rhetoric analysis is not just to describe the visual, but to determine and deconstruct the sales pitch
    The job as the analyst is to take out the emotion and to pass judgement as to whether it’s effective
    Does not overtly tip its hand or mention the goal anywhere in the ad
    The obvious intended message is ‘we are not selling you anything’

    Most likely if you think there’s enough detail, there’s not
    Concentrate on the rhetoric half of the assignment
    Spend less time talking about the colors of things and more time telling why they’re that color
    Don’t talk about the grass being yellow, talk about why the grass is yellow
    Don’t talk about things unless you understand the reason behind it, and you need to explain it
    30 second video to have enough content to describe in detail
